  • David over at Bama Homestead sent us 20 Silky Eggs to hatch out in our incubator! I am truly excited to raise Silkies. They are known for going Broody and being good mama hens! If we are going to have a truly sustainable homestead then we will need breeds of chicks that will hatch eggs and keep the cycle of life going here on the homestead.

    Last spring we went a little crazy and got about 80 layers. We scaled back to 30-40 before winter. Then this spring we added another 40 plus 100 meat chickens lol. Obviously the meat chickens will be gone soon but we plan to keep 50-80 layers this winter. It's been worth it for bug control and the eggs are easy to sell 👍🏻

    I'm glad they told you to let the eggs settle before incubating, I was getting worried during the video. I love my silkies, they are so sweet although I ended up separating them into two flocks as like the other person told you, they could be bullied. They are so gentle natured and eat from your hands, although my two brahmas are the same and are part of the silkie flock! They are forever going broody though which is a real shame that I can't keep hatching too many chicks. I hope they are very successful and know you will love them. Love watching your videos x

  • @cleverkimscurios3783
    @cleverkimscurios3783 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's so exciting! I wasn't planning on having Silkies, but now I'm rethinking it. I don't want to have to use an incubator if I don't have to, either. Also we are now relooking in the western NC area for our homestead. I still love the west like crazy, but if we really want to be self-sufficient, your area makes so much more sense. We can get more land for less money than out here (or in AZ), there's plenty of water, and we are more likely to be able to feed our animals from our homestead than if we're in the desert. So... thanks? Kind of? it's a frustrating dilemma but not the worst thing to be debating.

    This is not the first time someone has said the eggs need a period of rest pointy side down before going into the incubator. This raises the question if that is necessary, how could they survive in the wild since they would not normally settle into that position except by randomly being propped up?

    Our chickens killed my silkie and they were the same age but when the silkie started getting its top poof on its head it bounced when she walked and they pecked her in the head to the point she had brain damage and died. It only took one day. When we saw what was happening and went to get an area ready to separate her the damage was done and she died the next day. They are wonderful chickens.

    I always recommend Aseel instead of silkies. They are very determined broodies. Aseels are more aggressive, good foragers. They are always high in the pecking order which ensure plenty of food and safety for chicks. Since aseels are game birds hens can fight to death to protect their chicks. They are good teachers I have seen them whacking a slow learner. Chicks raised by aseels are usually left alone because no one dares to mess with them. They continue looking after their chicks even when after they resume laying.
    It's not that I dislike silkies but I don't like when other hens bully them.

    My new chicken philosophy right now is that because they are not costing us anything to feed we should hatch out as many as possible. Ours will be neat bird and later bird mixes so dual purpose and when we feel like eating chicken it will be "food on demand". If we get overwhelmed we can always sell some and makes a little money 😉~Texas Mom

    Did he explain why you have to leave them pointed side down for six hours?

    • @reinas6401
      @reinas6401 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eggs have a little bubble of air in them (called an air sack) that starts out small and gets larger through incubation as they lose moisture. Right before hatching the chick breaks into this pocket of air and starts breathing for the first time. As the oxygen levels drop the chick then starts spasming and this leads to the beak breaking through the shell.
      This air sack is attached in the large end of the egg and can be dislodged during shipping or rough handling. By leaving them pointy end down it gives it the chance to re-attach. If it keeps rolling around while the eggs are turned while being incubated it may never attach, or attach in different places making "saddle" air sacks which can cause problems in the chicks development or hatching.

    Fun! I've been hesitant to get silkies myself because of their size compared to the other breeds we have. Plus, I have heard that silkies go broody like clockwork, and feared having to raise too many chickens. Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, and Salmon Faverolles are 3 breeds that have done well on our homestead for successfully going broody and raising chicks. Of the 33 laying hens we have, 5 of them have already gone broody/raised chicks...we have 23 new babies on the ground over the past 2 months!

    • @BamaHomestead
      @BamaHomestead 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My silkie momma hens are FIERCE when protecting their babies. More than I've seen in any other breed. Its crazy/hilarious. Silkie roosters are soooo funny. They too will protect the momma/chicks.

    • @jennifermccully3153
      @jennifermccully3153 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BamaHomestead awesome! My buffs are more docile for sure; but I have an Australorp and a Cuckoo Marans (a breed not typically known to go broody, but it's her second season in a row and she mothered 16!) who are crazy mean to the other hens when they're too close to their chicks. I make sure to pet them all a lot so they're used to me and have no problem with me handling their babies...I do it for the safety of my kids too.

    I bought some Ameraucanas from Whitmore Farms in Maryland a few years back. They lay beautiful blue eggs, and in the first year, they hatched out 7 clutches of eggs.
    Most were very good mamas. I did have one that hatched them out and then abandoned her babies after two weeks, but the flock raised them up and the cockerels protected them.
    They were all very food foragers, too.

    Heyyy another thing SULMET is very important keeping adult silkie is easy but raising chicks silkie is easy when good good treated sulmet avoids cocci they often preeetty often gets it more then other breeds but only that Sumer very low amount in water first 3 days no more and after week 3 only after 3 weeks old a little of like 7 to 8 days acidic copper sulfate that's 5 to 6 dollars only but no so necessary sulmet for me is important first 3 days OTHER GOOOD THING TO KNOW ......... BROODING AND BREEDING silkies without mom hen doesn't work so good for me i´ve know to loose many chicks : l. Long time ago because of that this breed is not a rhodeisland or Cornish they are bantam and delicate when chicks mom hen is for me at least for me is VITAL silkie momi! Maybe you will get it done without the hen Anyway family you have so much more to show me than what i can tell you but anyways i know i. Really have some gooooood silkies i hope it goes the same for u : GOD´S SHALOM BE WITH YOU !!!!

    I will say you don't need this advice but for somehow almost every person buys this breed from me comes back with the same issues like ok silkie hen is like Pekín great broody hens but what i do is after hatching chicks you can put her to brood again after the 2 and 3trd hatch because they stay in weight when brooding eggs but whenever you put her to raise chicks they are so lovely to them that almost never eats ...... another thing they are so tender that sometimes rooster abuse over one silkie chickens and usually they get weak and die i´ve seen people with 4 or 5 rooster silkie are too calm and she will submit very easy to rooster which leads to abuse of the males hahaha i have 1 male per 8 hens . Remember i tell this for learning of mistakes i push the hen to eat eat eat when brooding Pekín and silkies goes in love with brooding and forgets eating that dangerous but no difficult to solve just make sure she eats if not do it yourself push the food on her beak maybe i don't know maybe in Puerto Rico the heat sometimes is a problem although the place i live is pretty cold like 70 85 hottest no more thanks God

    After God Made Jesus rise up from this earth, about 600 years later, God Gave another Scripture to the world, but not in Hebrew or Aramaic, as God Did before. God Gave it in Arabic to a human man called Muhammad. Please read this Scripture. God Said that He never had a son. Jesus is a human, like other human men. However Jesus worked hard to obey God and not do sins, and became a great human, according to God. Learn how you too can be a great human, believing God and doing good deeds only. Please read the Holy Qur'an from God. Remember, God is not Jesus; Jesus is not God. God does not have a mother. Mary is the mother of Jesus. God Created Jesus and Mary, and God Does not have a mother or a father. I ask God humbly to Bless you. Sincerely, Jocelyn Poesnecker
