Hey, buy a supper soaker fill it with your fly repellent, it’s a kids toy that shoot incredibly far and a lot at once, with multiple shots! Get rid of that failure for the flies, just a thought.. oh how cute and sweet they ran to you 🥰!

A Super Soaker won't clog up? I think his sprayer might have lost the seals if the fly spray is acidy like bleach takes a heavy duty sprayer or it eats the seals. Great idea. I'm going to recommend it to another animal guy.

    Hi Dusty,
Growing up my dad would hunt deer so watching TH-camrs like yourself get into the meat aspect of this doesn’t bother me. I am so grateful that you explained to us that the ones we see every day…Big Joe, Eleanor, Dunbar etc….are more or less “pets” and not being processed. I’m so glad that you have not named the ones you are raising for meat. You are a very responsible farmer and that’s one of the things that keeps me watching you.

I had to mention to you about the Diatomaceous Earth you spread out for the Bison.
I was an Engineer for Schools in Milwaukee. Several of the Engineers got a rare type of lung cancer after dumping Diatomaceous Earth in the slurry tank of the high school swimming pool filter. They would just dump it in the tank, breathing the fine particles every day. One I knew personally was alright after going through treatments of chemo and Radiation. I was substituting in his place until he got back. I would hold my breath and completely cover my nose and mouth, so I didn't breathe the fine powder, then run, Lol! I realize you aren't doing that every day but I noticed that it was blowing around when you poured it out. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, but I'm concerned about how you could be inhaling the Diatomaceous Earth and have problems down the road. I Love all of your videos and how you care about them, and I would like to see you stay safe in the process.

something that might help with flies is dragging a chain harrow or length of chain-link in the pastures to break up the manure clumps and help them breakdown and disintegrate in the ground. ya it wont directly help the bison immediately but it will make it one less breeding areas for the flies and also spread the nutrients around so the grass will grow even and not in spots as much. if you have a chain harrow the slight scars the little teeth will leave will help any rain get absorbed in the ground more then just running off on top of the soil too so it should be a small win in many ways.

We use a trailer mounted 50 gallon spray tank towed behind a Quad using a 12 volt, 3.8 gpm pump clipped to the battery. I've installed a 50 ft hose to the spray wand with an adjustable nozzle tip This will spray a stream about 35 feet. Spraying Bison might make me install a second pump to get added pressure/volume to increase the safety zone. The tank trailer also has a spray bar in the rear that covers 16 ft wide. You could easily rearrange it to spray vertically on only one side to do a drive-by .
we use it for weeds, flies and even tree aphids. Tractor Supply sells a similar unit. Might be safer...I held my breath while you stood in front of the scattering DE. Used to raise Texas Longhorn Cattle.. Love love the Bison. You are great witth them.

You need a Hudson sprayer!! For long lasting, hassle proof operation, sprayer should be emptied and washed out after every use. Also agree with other about using Redman extra garlic salt…others are having great success

I'm getting ready to move and as I pack my shipping container I'll sprinkle a little DE over each layer of boxes. It really does a number on insects. DE is the skeletons of diatoms - microscopic. It's like barbed wire - slices the exoskeleton of the insects and they dehydrate and die.
I've also used different forms of DE for aquarium water filtering. It's like a HEPA filter for water - really polishes it up nice. Used to use it for swimming pools too.
Good stuff - dead diatom skeletons!

Dusty……go buy a new sprayer! Get a larger one to put on the side by side that sprays a Mist. On other videos I watch with cows they seem to accept the mist much better than a full stream. Also by putting it in the side by side you can take more out and drive around the bison. Personally I think that is better than leaning across the fence trying to get a hand healed on working fly sprayer. 😂

Diatomaceous Earth is good in a lot of applications, just keep in mind that what makes it effective disappears if the DE gets wet.
What makes it effective is it's razor sharp edges that slices the critters up, then the absorption of the body oils/fluids causing death. Once wet, those razor sharp edges become inert.
For the record flies HATE peppermint oil. We used to have a mister in the stables on a timer that had a mixture specially prepared to not clog the mechanisms. But the core of it was peppermint oil. Never had flies in the stable.

Hard to imagine that there were close to 100 million of these magnificent creatures in 1800. By 1900 there were less than 10,000. Now the number is back up over 500,000 most of which live on private lands.

    • @douglasmacduff4925
      @douglasmacduff4925 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The reason there were 100 million in 1800 was that indigenous peoples across the continent were nearly wiped out by diseases such as measles and small pox introduced by the Europeans as well as by conflicts with the new immigrants starting shortly after the Spanish arrival. The Indians used to keep the bison population in check but by 1800, the bison population had mushroomed. Before 1750-1800 their population was probably never more than a couple million total

Yesterday I just watched a video on Sonne Farms in South Dakota. They raise Black Angus cattle but they were trying out a machine that puts out a mist to control the flies on the cattle. It may be worth watching to see it. Might be a good machine for the Bison. Love your videos Dusty, I love the personalities these Bison have and watching them roll around and Elenor being silly. Such beautiful animals.

You can order 50 lb bags of food grade Diatamatious earth and put it in a spreader and do entire sections of your fields, not just tossing by hand. They're eating it because of the calcium in it.

Diatamatious earth is best for hard shelled bugs, like fleas, etc. It actually cuts their outer shell and they dehydrate and die. Used for a flea problem that I had spent hundreds of dollars on trying to control. Dusted rugs and dogs with this and they where gone within a day. Had to re-dust for the young ones that hatched, but took care of them also. I don't think it will work on the fly problem

Dusty, watching the calves after you spread the dust in the wallow the calves seemed to lick it and smell it and then rolled in it. Could you use a spreader such as for lawns or a flour sifter to spread it further. I'm a city girl so don't know if it would work. Love watching your posts and seeing the herd. Big Joe is awesome. What about putting his face on a t-shirt.

At the beginning when Dunbar comes out of the cage, it is so fearsome, I always jump! Must be that time of year for sure. Love to see them all, the ranch is growing. Actually, some like the cool spray. Get you a good battery one that can be recharged as many as you have to spray, and they are so large.. the boss tries it first in the Waller.. is that Big Joe? That stuff is attracting them. Wondering if you should be breathing that powder! Wear a mask! Wondering if just plain baking soda would work?
