I got the GR.1 REVELL as a gift a few days ago. It's very nicely detailed considering its age. I got extra exhausts and a full cockpit with seats from AIRES.
If I had bought it myself I wouldn't pay for the extras and rather spent some time detailing here and there. The ITALERI kit is very nice as well and regardless
of its price, I would enhance the cockpit a bit and leave everything else as it is. I believe that good weathering will do more for the exhausts than an aftermarket set.

Totally agree, I saw this Italeri kit in a hobby shop this morning & nearly dropped it when I saw the price! You would REALLY have to want dropped flaps to buy it over Revell

Yep, crazy price. Especially when you compare it to the Tamiya F-16 which is in the same ballpark. Richie

I suppose if it really means that much to someone then yes they will pay that over the Revell. You pay sour money and take your choice.

You get what you pay for. If you're building a 1/32. Budget need not be the issue. With this Italeri kit everything is already there. This kit goes together perfectly. The company really stepped it up a notch on this one.

I got the Black ECR version of the revell one and I gotta say this is gotta be the most detailed kit I ever worked on. It’s got all panel lines and rivets it looks great I gave it a gloss black primer wash and sanded down again it came out much to my surprise so much better than I thought. I got after market decals coming though and I’m going to do the RAF MED Sea grey… with gloss black top with all the Sqdns insignia along the main line going toward the tail. And I’m healthy jealous. I’ll just tell you all I had Squadron leaders and Flt Lt’s excited bout me in Cadets when we went flying I couldn’t get enough of it and cos I turned up to all those fundraiser days no one else did I got to fly often. Did aerobatics the lot I love the little Bulldog so yea you lot are lucky I got terrible eyesight-7.50 short sighted or I’d have shown you some top gun stuff and then there is (actually I’d have just done as I was told) 😂 safety first. I am gutted it was my dream I did seek it out early age. But is my hand. So I build small ones 😂. Great job thank you for your service.

@@RWHobbies by all means do. If you haven’t bought the Xtradecal sheet yet I already have it on its way any day now and I’m not using all those for desert babe plus where mine is originally the 1/32 ECR I also got those decals for the sides so if you want them I can P.O. Box to you free (I won’t need 2 tornadoes in 1/32 haha) the decals for desert babe commemorative edition I’m not using this decal set comes with 3 variants the desert pink babe, RAF Camo and Med grey so I only need the key decals tail and main featurette if it helps that is. I am just glad we are keeping the hobby going. I remember the 90’s modelling and so forth it’s kinda our time to shine but I’m all for just sending it on it’s gonna lack daylight in my drawer otherwise haha

Just bought the Revell Tornado "cheap" for $130 Aus, the Italeri kit sells @ $260-290 here in most shops. I can remember when this was a hobby, so damn expensive nowadays even for kits that are 20+ years old!

Fair play to recap I see why it’s the money I also got the F14 Tamiya one which is £90 for 1/48 😂 and £30 for the Édouard photo etch I got. Then there is do I do all those other aftermarket parts now I started. It gets expensive but I am thinking of the aftermarket landing gear for these in Alloy

Italeri is ALWAYS extremely overpriced. Especially their 1/35 "ancient" armor kits. They try to charge AFV Club prices for kits that originated from 30 or 40 years ago.

High praise for doing this review Richie.! I've owned the Revell 1/32 for a long while and even though it might be old tool it certainly had more effort put in way back then. Everything is just so much sharper, more subtle than the Italeri.
I bought the Italeri for low $ recently so thought I'd compare as well. Hugely disappointed with the Italeri and its Airfix panel lines. These are not even consistent when comparing the upper and lower fuselage halves. Upper is just awful, moulded in play-doh, whereas the bottom which won't be seen is pretty nice.!
Revell may have fading panel lines but everything where it will be seen is absolutely beautiful - still holds up against modern Kinetic etc.
What is really strange is that the Italeri 1/32 Mirage which I also have is rather beautifully panel-lined. Seemingly a different design/production team on that one.
Revell undercarriage legs have crisper detail, and 1/10th the flash that Italeri's has.
Come on Italeri.. even if they cost the same I'd go for the Revell.

Great review Richie! I've had the Revell kit in the stash for decades. I don't see anything in the Italeri kit to make me want to buy it. Very disappointing to see the trench-like panel lines. A deal breaker for me. As far as photo-etch, I'd bet Eduard have a better etch set for the Revell kit.

  • @Zone5Aviation
    @Zone5Aviation 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Looks like this is going to be a story of two halfs for a long time. I guess the price of the Italeri kit is based purely on the fact that they had to completely tool up for it. Italeri has the edge slightly in the fact that they added the extra features such as the complete engines and dropped flaps and open spoilers. To do the flaps on the Revell kit you either need the Paragon set which is out of production, difficult to get hold of and just as expensive as the kit when you can get hold of it. Alternatively Flightpath do their Photoetch flap set which is tricky. I think Italeri also missed a trick in that the GR4 tornado common load out in Operation Telic and others like it was a Litening II or TIALD designator pod, Paveway IV and 6 Brimstone missiles mounted on two launchers mounted at the back of the belly rails. The weapons included in the kit, don't really reflect an operational GR4 however I like that they've catered for the ASSTA upgrades on the German and Italian Tornados which will allow them to deploy JDAM GBU-31s and AIM-9X Sidewinders. Nice bit of forward thinking there but the kit overall is still a mixed bag of tricks. I have just ordered one despite having several of the Revell kits, more just out of curiosity and the fact that I love the Tornado and my dad was stationed at Lossiemouth, Marham and St Athan, so was used to seeing them.

I have a slightly older copy of the Revell kit - sadly the moulds looked like they needed a clean, as underside and part sides is missing any panel details, if you squint you can see something should be there but just didn’t come out of the mould correctly. And I can’t scribe what I don’t know is there or not!
Would be interested to see if they cleaned up the moulds and the details now show on the sides of the rear fuselage.
I also own a Revell F/A-18 in 1/32 and can see how much of a mess that kit is in parts, when instructions tell you to clean flash off of parts you have a problem!

Italeri, used to be a reasonably/cheaply priced range. I noticed a difference when they introduced their Italian WW2 aircraft a few years back & their prices went through the roof. Obviously new tooling & research costs money, but If you are charging the same as the Asian manufacturers, you need to offer the quality. Italeri have never offered the shake & bake kits. Sorry (not that I would be considering the cost of the 1/32 Tornado anyway), Italeri you need to drop the prices, to more realistic prices otherwise you will not have a market for much longer.
