St Clair and Maceo were already on Tenor so JB had Pee Wee play alto Maceo went to the army and when he came back JB had him switch to alto and the rest is history

They included many renowned session players such as Curtis Ousley (King Curtis), “Blue Lou” Marini, Stanley Peterson and Clem Ehoff to name a few. They were tighter than this group. They backed Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Sam & David, Eddie Floyd, etc. and are in the R & B Hall Of Fame. The JB Orchestra is not

Actually Maceo didn’t start playing alto sax until about 6 years after he came back from the army. Around 1972.
There was no other r&b or soul artist of this era traveling with a band of this caliber.
