      The "Pepsi challenge" was rigged as Coke tastes best when between 35-37 degrees Fahrenheit. Coke at 44 degress Fahrenheit doesn't taste the same. Further, Coke was less obesity causing when using sucrose, dextrose and glucose, as our metabolic controls are able to cope with these. The book 'Pure, White, and Deadly was fought with the same tactics the tobacco companies used. If we want to improve the health of all our citizens, from heart disease to cancer, we need to ban fructose as a food additive.

      As someone who lived through this, I can honestly say that New Coke tasted awful. I think people who probably weren't born yet, like yourself, can do research and claim that it was protesters who started a movement to turn people against New Coke which simply isn't true. As someone who lived through it, I can affirm that most people didn't like the taste of New Coke...and I can honestly say that I didn't know anything about a protest against New Coke; however, I was in High School at the time and everyone I knew hated new Coke. I actually switched to Pepsi. I remember after the change to New Coke, everyone felt Coke had made a mistake. They wanted old Coke back...I'm basing this off of my own experience. The sad thing is when they brought back old Coke, it didn't taste the same and many people I know felt the same. I think the old formula has been altered.

    Simon: I'm late to the game here, but I was on the front lines of this change and can say, yours is the most accurate account I've seen on the internet. Coke reviewing sales trends, and the Pepsi Challenge were all key to Coke's decision to change the flavor of classic Coke. Taste testing drinks is a alchemy/science that I made my living at for 30 years. Coke's flavor, over the consumption of an entire serving when held against the food eaten with it, usually burgers and fries, held up better than Pepsi's because Coke's more astringent flavor base complimented the greasy food better. Pepsi is slightly less astringent and slightly sweeter. It also has a somewhat more complex flavor profile that works better with salty snacks. The Pepsi Challenge played to these facts by requiring the participants to first 'cleanse' their pallet with a soda cracker before doing the taste test. Under those conditions, Pepsi wins and Coke loses. If instead they would have offered some french fries instead, Coke would have won walking away. Coke didn't recognize this trap up front and just ran with the implications instead. Coke was aimed at over taking Pepsi sales in grocery stores, where given a choice, more people chose Pepsi. Probably, but I can't prove it, because they were taking it home to drink with their Lays potato chips and Doritos. The odd thing is, in the earliest taste tests, Royal Crown Cola was included, and it kicked both Coke and Pepsi's butts. That was a fact Pepsi chose not to share to the outside world.
    Good job on this story, Simon.

    • @cdjhyoung
      @cdjhyoung 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@RachelsantVIDEO Coke is number one in soda sales in the world. In the USA, this is because they have an excellent fountain sales organization. They will do just about anything to have Coke in your fountain dispenser, and follow that up with great service. Pepsi keeps trying to break Coke's strangle hold on that part of the market, and until they do, Coke will remain #1 in sales. Know where the only US McDonald that sells Pepsi instead of Coke is located? Detroit Metro Airport. Pepsi managed to gain exclusive pouring rights to that property, and it was written in such a way that even the McDonald's in the terminal had to serve Pepsi -exclusively.

    • @ShadowAraun
      @ShadowAraun 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      yes and no. while the "corn lobby" is partly to blame, the real issue lies in that corn is extremely easy to grow in almost every agricultural region of the USA, and grows for a rather large portion of the year. This naturally lead to the reason why the Corn lobby even started, and the already plentiful crop became more plentiful. We physically produce more Corn in the USA than we can even eat, or rather than we even should eat, even going so far as to feed it to all of our livestock. now the thing with corn is.... MOST CREATURES WE FEED CORN TOO CANNOT DIGEST IT AND INFACT SHOULD NOT CONSUME IT. EVER. 1 such species that is known for eating corn that should not is Homo Sapiens. them aside, we feed it to farm raised cattle, salmon, chickens, pigs, etc. None of these creatures are able to take any nutrition from the corn, instead only gaining a large sum of calories, which is why most farm raised livestock is pumped full of growth hormone and kept alive with other drugs. Other solutions were finding a way to put corn in everything humans eat, including substituting it for sugar, high fructose corn syrup , which the human body actually mis-identifies as a protein and does not burn off like normal sugar, prompting it to be stored instead. It is also used as filler in ground beef served by many fast food chains, increasing the calorie count in the food for 0 nutritional benefit. This is what the corn lobby is to be blamed for. overproduction of an already easy to produce crop. The issue with products using HFCS in the US actually has nothing to do with the corn lobby but everything to do with it, the fact is sugar is hard to grow in the US compared to corn, and is thus far more expensive, so really the true problem lay in our companies just being cheapskates.
      TLDR: corn bad. corn lobby bad. companies being cheap worse.

I don't hate vimeo, I like the best option more. I don't use much social media, but if I used something like facebook I'd continue using it because I know the groups on there and the system. People buy the same smartphone because the layout is simple to understand since they learned it that way and don't want to have to relearn the basic shit for another company's phone.

      That's not what brand loyalty is. People go to youtube and facebook because that's where everyone else already is. The analogy would be picking a supermarket over a market stall 10 miles away. You're not loyal to the supermarket specifically, they just have what you want in a convenient place. If the market stall was closer and had more options you may choose to go there instead. If there were other social media and Video hosting sites that had similar levels of content, features and a userbase, people would probably switch between them as necessary or even use all of them simultaneously
      Brand loyalty is sticking with a brand even when it has serious flaws and there are alternatives available that do not have those flaws. The 'new coke' thing was a case of major brand loyalty, because despite the fact that most people liked the taste of new coke better, they deliberately stuck with old coke. They were presented with a better alternative and refused to even consider switching without any valid reason to do so. That is brand loyalty.

      John Smith Better yet, give it an entirely different name, and market the hell out of it. Eventually it could become the cola that outperforms both, while allowing Coke to control practically 2/3rds of the market, instead of half.
      Although, I do believe there is something to the sentiment that Coke being less sweet makes it better as a regular drink. I enjoy both, but if I am to have a regular daily drink between the two, it'll definitely be Coke for that reason.

    Great video. A perfect example of the psychological implications of humans' loyalty towards brands. Despite most people liking New Coke more, they ritualistically praise and consume Classic Coke. And it's interesting to see how New Coke started out popular but after a few loud mouths and the media got involved, suddenly everyone becomes concerned over New Coke and wants an older, inferior flavor back. This shows our tribalism very clearly, once people started arguing for the return of Classic Coke, you had to choose sides and the Classic Coke fans gathered a loud passionate crowd much faster and over a short amount of time, everyone wanted to be on their side. Very easily led into this campaign to bring back the 3rd place flavor.

    @gener.1253 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I see that you have been drinking the kool-aid, I mean Coke Classic. When all this was going on, I was working for T&G Control in Atlanta. They had a contract to build 54 control systems to be installed in the 54 Coke plants worldwide. Not the bottling companies, the plants that cooked the Coke syrup. The control systems were built to control the delivery of corn syrup to the cookers. To change from sugar to corn syrup required tearing out convayor systems, sugar storage areas and installing syrup holding tanks, pumps, valves and pipes. This took several months and happened everywhere at the same time. Coke was unable to duplicate the taste with corn syrup so the plan was to introduce "New Coke", a product that they knew would be rejected. Before work began, Coke, made and warehoused months worth of New Coke. It was released when work was started, and every original Coke was removed from the shelves when New Coke was launched. When work was completed and production was resumed, Coke Classic was launched. Funny how the New Coke stayed in the stores gathering dust. I know this because I built a number of the process control systems used to run the pumps and valves, delivered them to the Atlanta plant and helped with the install.
    WHY??? Money!!! Moving many tons of sugar every day with convayor systems is difficult. Convayor belts can break, spilling tons of sugar. Production stops!! Clean up the spill and make repairs to the convayor system can take hours or days. Corn syrup is a liquid that gets pumped through a pipe, open a valve, turn on a pump. Better control, less product lost, less down time equals money saved.

      Your version makes more sense. The New York Times has a November 4, 1984 announcement that Coke and Pepsi were to switch to Corn Syrup, and that Pepsi had already been using a mixture. This is not 5 years before 1985, when New Coke came out, April 23. In fact, New Coke is 6 months after the announcement.
      That would indicate, that the old stock was being moved out, and the new corn syrup machinery was being put in place. New Coke used only corn syrup (high fructose), so when the demand for "Classic Formula" reached a fevored pitch, it's not like they're going to put the conveyer belts back in.
      Interestingly, I can almost guarantee that New Coke was using sugar for taste tests, which is why, when they actually went into production, since they thought there was no difference between sugar and HFCS, they got a dose of reality when people began drinking New Coke, with HFSC instead of the control groups with sugar... though I admit, this is speculative.
      It appears the 5 years earlier remark, is confounding Pepsi with Coke... otherwise, why the New York Times Story about it, right?

    • @cdjhyoung
      @cdjhyoung 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gene R - this is a great tale, and some of it is undoubtedly true. But virtually no one was using granular sugar in beverage production in 1984. Sucrose is the liquid form of beet and cane sugar used widely in the pop industry. When the plant I worked in made the conversion to Fructose, it was by merely adding duplicate sugar (fructose) tanks and some additional piping. Took about three weeks, and we never went out of production. You're right about the change over of sweeteners starting with a blend: We initially went 20% fructose to 80% sucrose. After about six months we went 50-50 and after a year we were at 100% fructose in Pepsi. Oddly, we left the Mountain Dew formula alone for a number of years. Think Coke/Pepsi fans are crazy? When we started to change Mountain Dew all hell broke loose on our complaint line. What I learned from this is that you can pretty much change the product formula anyway you want and not get any push back, as long as you keep your mouth shut about what you are doing.

    Coca-Cola has managed to return to the old taste of "New Coke" with Coke-Zero and Coke Life. Coke-Zero has more sweetener (thus maintaining the taste of diet, but being as sweet as standard) and Coke-Life has half sugar (once again maintaining the diet coke taste but adding sweetness).
    I remember when Coke-Zero first came out and I pointed out to my friends that the ingredients were exactly the same as Diet Coke except it was sweeter and they went crazy... because they did not want to believe they were drinking sweetener... they seemed to be under the delusion it was magically sweet without adding sugar or sweetener,
    Personally: Coke-Zero is too sweet for my taste.

    • @pandoradoggle
      @pandoradoggle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    • @JoelReid
      @JoelReid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HAHAHA. did you read my comment?
      Coke-Zero has EXACTLY the same ingredients as Diet coke. Look on the back of the can.
      I used to work in a cinema and to get the flavour of Coke Zero you can just increase the amount of Diet Coke syrup into the mixer and get the same flavour as Coke Zero. Seriously. Just increase the syrup concentration in a mixer of diet coke and you get coke zero, it is that easy.

    • @JoelReid
      @JoelReid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you fell into the exact trap that is talked about in the video. you believe in classic coke so much you want to beleive that the coke zero you are drinking is the same... it tastes more like diet coke than classic coke.

    • @pandoradoggle
      @pandoradoggle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Diet Coke Ingredients. carbonated water, caramel color, aspartame, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate (to protect taste), natural flavors, citric acid, caffeine
      Coke Zero Ingredients: carbonated water, caramel color, phosphoric acid, aspartame, potassium benzoate, natural flavors, potassium citrate, acesulfame potassium, caffeine
      Coca Cola Ingredients: carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, caffeine
      The ingredient lists aren't identical, but what you're overlooking here is the "natural flavors" ingredient. That's the formula that primarily determines what it tastes like, and they don't have to list everything because ingredient lists can't be trademarked or copyrighted. They keep them secret instead (or try to). Diet Coke and Coca Cola don't use the same flavor formula or natural ingredients that determine the flavor. Diet Coke and New Coke use the same formula. Coca Cola and Coke Zero use the same formula.

    • @JoelReid
      @JoelReid 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pandoradoggle I am in Australia and the ingredients seem to be a bit different to the ones you listed.
      www.coca-colajourney.com.au/brands/coca-cola-zero/coca-cola-zero
      www.coca-colajourney.com.au/brands/diet-coke/diet-coca-cola
      but there is the "flavour" difference between the two.
      Even so, I can get the "flavour" of Coke zero by increasing the concentration of diet coke syrup in a mix. I was the one who made sure the diet coke was not to sweet and then I would have a second tap (unlabelled) with higher syrup so my fellow workers could get their fake "coke-zero" fix.
      It may be that the "flavour" in Diet Coke is not as important as we are led to believe and may be more to combat a foul taste of Diet coke due to its lack of sweetness.
      For interest sake: Diet coke tastes increasingly terrible as it approaches its use-by date.

    Anyone else noticed Banquet chicken changed their Crispy Chicken formula? It happened over a year ago, and now their frozen fried chicken tastes like their Banquet frozen dinner chicken nuggets. If you check their site, the ratings for their chicken have tanked to 1-star. Their site used to allow written reviews too, but probably because of so many negative responses, they no longer have written reviews, just the aggregate star reviews (still 1 star).
    Has anyone else been as pissed off about this change as I? Can anyone suggest an alternative frozen fried chicken brand? I will not eat Banquet chicken again until they change their formula back, and since it's been a whole year, it looks like that's not happening. :(

I remember her telling me that she was told if a representative of the company ever came in and asked for their competitors brand and the waitress didn't correct it, they would get in trouble. Now I'm not sure if that's actually true, and neither was she. I do remember her piping up after she got out of waitressing to gently remind the waitresses and waiters who didn't correct their customers that they ought to.....

      The 7 may or may not have been a reference to the atomic weight of lithium, but nobody really knows. Lithium is still used as a mood stabilized for manic-depressives; that makes it both up and down I guess.
      So much about those old ads is gross to modern ears. E.g. sugar water was apparently slendering back in the day; who knew? Advertizing that an 11 month old baby pictured drinking 7-up isn't the youngest customer you have, and suggesting that parents mix 7-up into milk if babies don't want to drink their milk, sounds more like some kind of abuse.

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It going flat faster may be why it tastes sweeter, which it definitely does. More carbonation means more carbon dioxide. Carbonation does affect flavor. It's why diet sodas are often ultra carbonated to cover up the lack of sweetness. Coke might be more carbonate and thus not taste as sweet. Noting that "more sweet" isn't always preferable. Carbonation adds carbonic acid which is bitter, and people like bitter too.

    I don't know what but they have changed some ingredients in Coca Cola because it reacts very differently to freezing than it did a number of years ago.
    Before it froze to a more even, soft "slush" consistency but after the change it almost immediately goes to the hard, frozen water stage wich means you can't really put it in the freezer or snow to chill it, at least not in the same way as before when it became "slushy" before freezing solid.

Talk to politicians, get protective tarrifs forcing you to pay about double what you would have for cheap sugar from places it grows naturally (like brasil), and suddenly you have people lining up giving you money for your corn sugar. I was a teenager then. I enjoyed the new flavour well enough, but it was slightly softer and sweeter than the old coke and thus more like pepsi. I hated pepsi then, though that does seem to imply I was in a minority.
    I have had a similar experience recently. I eventually went off regular coke for diet reasons and now consume more diet coke than I should. I liked coke zero when it came out, though less than diet coke. Go figure. By this point I liked diet coke so much that regular coke had become too sickeningly sweet for me. Coke zero was more like regular coke, though not as sweet, so I had it occasionally. Then they changed the coke zero formula recently to be even more like regular coke. Yup. now mostly too sweet for me, though on occasion still nice.

      ...Or so we are led to believe. It's really not.
      New Coke is Coke today. They retired the name only.
      You just need to look at the ingredient label.
      I loved a cold bottle of Coke (From a bottled drink vending machine) when I was young, circa 1975. Current coke is syrupy and way too sweet. Other flavors in the brew are missing.
      The same can be said of Pepsi, formerly a great, tasty, refreshing drink in itself. Very syrupy and too sweet. Few other flavors present than used to be.
      There used to be a very distinct difference in flavor between the 2 colas. One of the common ingredients in Pepsi used to be vanilla extract. That ingredient is missing today. There used to be Ginger extract in Coke.
      Today, both are basically caramel color, sugar water with differences in the sucrose/phosphoric acid content to change the flavor. Pepsi is a little bit more acidic, or a little more "tingly" on your tongue. Coke is a bit more "smoothe" . They are both crap.

      A) Pepsi is similarly spiting their numbers now, more or less... (Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke are no longer on the market, but Cherry Pepsi is along with Diet Pepsi...)
      B) Coke is on top of Pepsi by enough of a margin that they can afford to split their sales...
      C) None of these flavours are /really/ competing with CocaCola Classic enough to split their sales completely. Coke Life, maybe, but Coke Life is also competing with Diet Coke and Coke Zero, both of which are not competing with CocaCola Classic's market. And Diet and Zero are mostly competing with one another, not Classic.

      RICHARD1974 I believe they went back to Old Coke after the uproar, and sold both for awhile but then gradually changed the Coke Classic into What New Coke was. Slowly so people didn’t know or notice as fast and also the second time decided not to tell anyone it was done

      @AKayfabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Richter yes it did, howeverI think they have gradually changed Classic Coke into a formula closer to what New Coke was in the past 20 years. Coke doesn’t taste as it did then either now it IS sweeter. Pepsi is still more seeet however and I still hate Pepsi. But I like RC cola so who knows

      I don't think I ever tried New Coke, but I have occasionally drunk some Diet Coke, and it doesn't really taste like normal Coca Cola. I don't doubt that they've modified the recipe over time, but a lot of perceived change will just be because your taste buds actually change over time.

      With a clever/obnoxious 'viral' online marketing campaign, it probably would work.

    • @revmpandora

      after all, using online marketing exclusively, there is now a company successfully selling a deodorizing spray that you spray into the toilet before you have a shit.
      There's also a stool to put your feet on while you have a shit, which is a fantastic thing, but you certainly don't need to buy a special stool for it. any ordinary children's bathroom sink step stool will work.

    The present formula is purported to have "de-cocanized" coca leaf extract in it, for flavor only. I remember my dad telling me many years ago what a great buzz he and his friends used to get when they drank the original formula in the early 1900s. I would love to have tasted it.
