Amsterdam Schiphol To Limit Passenger Numbers This Summer

  • Unable to keep up with an increasing footfall, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport has capped the number of passengers this summer due. The decision is the result of an ongoing labor shortage and will undoubtedly affect airline revenue and passenger plans during the busy summer season.

Airline staff as well as airport workers NEED to be paid better. They are the backbone of an industry worth billions and billions on its own and that also generates TRILLIONS to the entities that use it. The workers making this industry possible NEED to be paid better wages.

I discussed this matter recently and for the UK it's a security clearance delay which I suspect is across the board.
However, to sell and then cancel at the very last moment is poor financially and reputationally.
A large flag carrier has been cancelling flights with greater than two weeks notice as to minimise the impact both in terms of compensation and bad publicity.
The big question is why did both airlines and airports sell either seats or slots that they knew they couldn't fulfil based on staffing levels and recruitment processes. It seems like a case of sell now and hope for the best where as if they had reduced the supply, the demand would have pushed prices up to an equilibrium.

I have worked at Schiphol they primarily use employment agency's so u don't have any securities. They can fire u without payoff or reduce the hours that you work. This is what happened during Corona, I didn't know if could pay my rent anymore so i switched jobs. Glad it worked out for me and I am never going back. It's a shame that it's always the heaviest unfashionable jobs that are needed the most but they get treated like garbage.

Schipolo fired massively during Covid, and now they do not have enough staff to resume traffic volumes to this amount. People tend to thinks it was a bad planning, maybe Schipol's management did not plan in time the recruitment of the necessary security and handling staff, but this in not completely true. In fact, management has a goal to maximize profits, and what they are doing now is a "stress test". They strech the system at his maximum, to test the patience of the passengers to accept the disruptions, and only when system is next to break, they do something, but acting on the airlines and not on their recruitment plan. They keep maximizing profit and they want to set up the system to be ready for the reduced traffic that will come in 2023 by law to reduce pollution in the area. Greed is managing Schipol at the moment.

I personally don't see this getting better until the autumn, when demand drops. All the fresh new security cleared staff might find the summer surge is already over. I'd advise anyone who hasn't yet booked a summer holiday to wait as long as they can, the med is still warm even in September/October. Unfortunately for those who can't, in many parts of Europe an alternative "staycation" is becoming so expensive (especially with the cost of fuel) and overbooked that the only real option is to stay at home and only do the odd day or weekend trip.

When a year or two ago the eggheaded heads of airlines and airports depressingly assessed the forecasts of recovery after covid and made generous personnel decisions, a modest assistant had to ask for words and say: "Well, all this is cool, but shouldn't we make a backup plan just in case, what will we do if people tired of isolation unanimously want to travel and the restoration of passenger traffic SUDDENLY happens faster, what are we thinking about now?"
But, unfortunately, this particular employee was on sick leave that day...

Luckily I had no issue when I flew to Germany a few days ago with easyjet from London Gatwick to Berlin. The flight did have a delay though both ways as there weren't enough ground staff at both airports to load and unload the aircraft. Luckily I only had carry on luggage so I didn't have the Issues that others had when they waited for theirs to come off. In all honesty I think this issue will last for a while as people apparently do not want to return to work at airports because pay isnt all that good apparently? and so are the shift patterns. but hopefully by summer 2023 this will hopefully have been solved. but then no one can see what the future brings right now. Covid is still amongst us and can still cause chaos somewhere along the line.
