Del was a super star and i can remember.i took a bus full of people to the Wakefield theater club and del after his performance came on to the bus and spoke with every body fel thank you do sorry you died you made me do welcome in your home in la love you
Thanks to all the TH-cam posters for helping to keep Dels music and memory alive. Rest in Peace Del, neither you nor your music will ever be forgotten...
Del Shannon was one of the greatest rock and roll singers ever and he was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet I was extremely fortunate to have known him very well as I interviewed him a number of times for radio.. He lived for music. Still remembered in Rock and Roll Heaven. Jim Slade
Great of you to tell us all that, Jim, thank you so much. It´s taken me 46 years to realise how fantastic Del Shannon is. First heard Runaway in 1961, then unaware of him, now discover in 2017 with shock I´ve ignored an outstanding artist. Del has depth, in his very performance as well as his lyrics. He gives his all to the song. Sadly, his passion and sensitivity brought him tragedy, for like me many never appreciated his artistic spirit. I think he was more than just a rock singer. Hopefully, with time, he will be acknowledged as the poet he surely is.
A superb songwriter, recording artist and outstanding live performer. They don't come along often. He wrote some of the greatest songs of the 60's. Sadly missed.
I don't want to sound dramatic but this genius changed my life in 1961 when I heard Runaway. He's the absolute greatest ever and it's so sad he's not here anymore. The songs will live forever. I saw him 8 times, just superb.
eagles1me, I feel pretty well the same as you. I have this "Del Shannon Live In England" CD and have listened to it for years but this is the first time that I've seen part of it on TH-cam. I've seen Del Shannon twice back in the 1980s, both times in the Royal Albert Hall in London, the second time was just a few months before he died, but thankfully like you said, the songs will live forever.
As an Australian fan, he toured here many times because he was kind of forgotten by his own country. He even lived here for about a year and produced many local artists. A pure genius. Hank Williams, Bob Wills and then Del are my three favourites!
You all are so lucky to have seen him. He’s one that I wish I had seen because live artists are the best. Elvis is another I wish I had seen. There are some talented people that bring you close to an Angelic electric feeling and these two would do it I’m sure!
I was so young then. The 60's, 70's, and 80's left us with so many great songs. I will remember till I fly away. I hope to get the chance to meet all of the greats. Thank you all for the best music.
When I was a teenager back in the 60's, I first heard this fantastic sound, (Runaway) coming from the waltzer at the local fairground in Blyth, Northumberland. Been a fan ever since. Seen Del at the Sands club in Whitley bay twice. Lasting memories for me and my wife. R.I.P. Dell
What a tremendous singer and performer. Fantastic vocal range. My Dad could never sit still when any of Del’s music came on in the car or house. He’d be beating the steering wheel like a drum and crooning his lungs out to me - we loved him. He welled up when he heard of his death. Terrible loss to rock n roll. Rest in peace Del Shannon. XxX
Unique, incredibly talented, Del Shannon made rock music exciting and greatly promoted its success. In the early 1960's, this man saw the future. He was the only American artist to record a Beatles song and a Rolling Stones song a year before they were discovered by Americans ( FROM ME TO YOU and UNDER MY THUMB). He had toured with the groups in England, groups that revered HIS great classics RUNAWAY (one of the greatest rock hits of all time), HATS OFF TO LARRY, LITTLE TOWN FLIRT and KEEP SEARCHIN'). He was one of a kind and his tragic end is greatly regrettable.
I Loved Del Shannon and all his great hits of the 60's. I saw him in concert in Whitchurch some years ago and although the theatre held few - Del put on a fantastic show. I put Del in line to my favourite singer of all time - Slim Whitman. That is a massive complement...
Wow, Slim Whitman. He was from this area of Florida! And you Aussies … I am still crazy about Stevie Wright! Funny how the world of rock goes round. Stevie was the best frontman of any band I ever saw - except James brown. Jagger wishes …!
When he died went went up to Nashville and did a fundraiser and to show our love , Me, Hank Jr, Frankie Lowery, Merle Kilgore, James R. Smith ( Hanks' Manager)
Del Shannon looked real good in this performance. In all the video's except the one from his concert in Fargo, ND where he was obviously suffering from the flu, he put on a good show. Even though he was sick in Fargo, he must have felt the show must go one and tried to do it then too. But you could see he was really sick, out of sorts and should have just taken the time to get over the flu. It's such a shame to lose a talented guy the way he went and so soon when he could have gone on like other singer song writers into old age. At the very least, we can enjoy his concerts on You Tube and CD's. RIP Dell Shannon. I hope you can see how much we miss you and still appreciate your talents.
WOW!! Del Shannon still rocks...and I'm an old fart...got to play with Jimi Hendrix and sing with Janis Joplin back in California in the60's at Cal Expo .. Del still rocks!!!!
Del you can't escape. There are too many of us hold you in our heart and I feel sure somehow you are aware of this and can feel the love and admiration reaching out to you.
Del was my hero when I was a lad. I was fortunate enough to see him live in my home town of Ramsgate in the U.K. not long before he died. Runaway is still my favourite song even after all these years. So many other fine recordings too. RIP Del.
I seen Del Shannon at Shake Rattle & Roll in Eau Claire Wisconsin in 1986! He had a very wonderful show & sang with his TRUE HEART! I really loved his show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Del sang all those great songs & was such a down to earth person! I had his autograph, but in the mix...& all the people.I had dropped this mistakenly! Their was no way that I could ever find it, & when I discovered that I had lost it Well, it was to late! He was GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Now its just a memorie.....& I had never seen him since! Then it was just 3 years later he had that terrible death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will ever forget his show!!! What a Great loss in the Entertainment world!!! Watch the Australian interview, its so sad at the end...He said what he said about his life in 3 years........................It never happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Daisy Mae
Good job, Tiger, teaching your kids about rock n roll. I've often said it saved us in the 50s and 60s - certainly kept me alive. And still does. RIP Del, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Stevie Wright, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie … great rockers, much missed. The list goes on too long.
I agree, a legend. consummate musician, singer, & performer. his music never gets old. my son is 32 & when he was 13, he would go into a music store & start ripping "runaway"on a keyboard & the people in the store would stop & look totally amazed. he'd follow up with "count me in", & "96 tears" he is a sound engineer for the Army jazz band & still plays those songs in sound checks. Del, your music lives on.
Saw Del at Baileys, Derby 31st March,1974 and he was fantastic. He is sadly missed and was an icon in the sixties but suffered because of legal battles about royalties etc.
Listened to Del in the '60's. Was in love with him, he was an IDOL back then. So, SO, many memories of those times!! Didn't realize he was so "troubled" back then!! He made my life better, with his music. R.I.P. Del Shannon.
I loved his songs when I was like seven years old. As time went by I remembered his songs. 1973 American Grifita. . Him and Buddy Holly will never be forgotten by me.
May GOD bless ,Del Shannon !!! A great Artist + Musician !! His music will last+remain forever !!! Thanx for the upload !! Very Best Regards, from Germany !!! Kammler03
I love this guy, been listening to him since the beginning, reel to reel tape, don't understand why such a great talent killed himself. Something went wrong somewhere.
From a few articles I've read, del always suffered from depression somewhat, but right around 1989 and 90 he started taking the then new and experimental drug prozac and he ended up being one of those few people who, instead of helping, it made his condition worse. I think it was on a bad day that he made his fatal decision. His family and 2nd wife… or common law wife has stated that she believes prozac is What pushed him over the edge. If it weren't for that, things were looking great for him. He looks like hes happy, humorous and excited about making music just months before that day, if you see the 15 minute short documentary on TH-cam here called "del Shannon the making of an album," he is laughing and joking and recording with Jeff Lynne and Tom petty. It had to be something unnatural that changed things for him because he doesn't seem at all like hes anywhere near that low of a state.
Was that when Howie Epstein was with Del? Best bass player … Tom Petty stole him in the late 80s I think. He could harmonize so well. Sadly, also passed away.
yeah well I was maybe 5 traveling with the family cape cod to NJ took about 10 hrs the first song I ever liked Hats off to larry must have played on the radio every hour iv loved his music ever since I'm 63 and I'm listening to it now
