Saw Del In Manchester in 1965. One of the best performers ever, he had a fantastic stage presence and a wonderful repertoire of songs. R.I.P. Del, you left us far too early.
Hats off to Del Shannon, what memories when we were kids at school and into our teens. A good mate of mine had all Del`s records, bet he still plays them!!
Del was one of a kind. Beautiful voice, great songwriter, outstanding performer. Everything I've heard about him is that he was a good human being too.
Del was wonderful, I hated to hear of his death in 90. It's hard to hear and see all the videos. Think he would have liked how much we appreciated Him and his music. Keep his spirit alive..he h ad a great smile injoying what he did. Rip
Back in 1979 I rode my Harley to Texas to visit my sister and her new husband... got caught in a wild thunder storm and waited it out under an overpass. A couple stopped and asked if I needed any help and I said " you have any Del Shannon tapes in the car ? " R.I.P..... one of the best in music history.
Del inspired many songwriters! Today l write and record with Australian artists and dream of just ONE song that comes close to the MAGIC from Del Shannon!
When you listen to these beautifully mashed together tracks, you realise what a rare talent this was. Was fortune to meet him (and his famous mohair coat) and hear him live several times - cherished memories. Del Shannon RIP - Rock In Perpetuity!
My hero....right from his first '61 UK hit...(when I was 12 years old!!) Del was a truly unique singer & songwriter. It was a privilege to meet him in on one of his early '70's UK tours & his autographed photocard, will always be one of my most treasured possessions..
This is such a beautiful tribute to Del. Makes me happy & wanna cry at the same time. This would have been much better played at his R & R Hall of Fame Induction than those horrible cover versions by other musicians.
And most of his material post 64 was fantastic too, but wasn't promoted as it should have been. The Further Adventures of Charles Westover is a psychedelic pop masterpiece that now has a kind if cult status fanbase. Great stuff as were his albums done with tom petty and jeff lynne.
Del Shannon was often featured on my shows ---: "SOS Sounds of the Sixties" broadcast on KRAI from Craig, Colorado --- 1963 to 1969.........Oh Yeah! Dean Sos ---------------- Sweet memories from the past!
I was a pre-teen in the "American Graffiti" era(early '60's). During those years I was caught between loving the '50's - style of Del Shannon and the newly arrived Beatles. I experienced the best of both worlds! It was quite a while after his suicide that I found out he was gone and very sad. What a loss of a great talent.
But even after The Beatles ushered in the sixties kind of sound, Del released a fantastic sixties vibed album called "the further adventures of Charles Westover," Which was unfortunately not promoted by his record company and it didn't sell well, but today it is widely considered a fantastic gem of psychedelic pop from that era. The The vast majority of the songs are written by him and… it sounds like it's cut from the same cloth as The Beach Boys pet sounds, the zombies Odyssey and Oracle, Simon and Garfunkel bridge over troubled water, The Beatles sergeant pepper… ETC.
Its great that sites like this & Spotify which I have just discovered , are keeping this music alive , as the Radio only plays what,s selected by committees . For your information Del has now three Face Books sites with around 1000 followers , not bad for some left us too early over 25 years +++
I just found Del's music 2 weeks ago .hes the only one i listen to .i don't listen to Elvis cause I think for every thousand or million views you get money and I don't think his ex wife should get it.they were divorce.
He was interviewed by Bob Costas and he seemed to me very focused and down 2earth....humble,no big ego chip on his shoulder....whadda cool 60's player 4sure....imho.
Yep he was great, there is so much anger in the world today, but there will always be love and heartbreak and Del and Roy sang for all those that won and lost in love! Del & Roy were top notch! And masters at what they did!!!

Several say it wasn't suicide because -- they knew him well and he was happy - making more money and was a decided icon in the world then. I think it was an accident. If you have ever been a new gun owner - it doesn't take much to find yourself mishandling the gun. Just saying I think it was a tragic accident.
Sitting out the Coronavirus virus in the southern Green Mountains. Just me and Del. Remembering sleeping in my homemade shack in PA hills as a kid, listening to an all night rock station. hearing Runaway. A song of truth and love in a time of bubblegum. Who else was singing about teenage runaways then? Del was real.

You don't see many artists doing tribute nights trying to impersonate Del Shannon.
Why?
Because they can't.
He was unique.

Feb of 1990
I wrongly or rightly thought he was a victim of Rockola in the latter years, ie ; No pay, No Play, also he was black balled by his managers.
Did he really die? Or just change his name to John Fogarty?
Great job on this. Would like to know who were in some of the photos.
I supplied a number of those photos so can probably help you

Del's success was tuckered by Uk DJ's taking bungs and sex bungs as well.
