RE: Behind the scenes: The SEAL team leader of this mission was Justin K. Sheffield. He was the one to pick Jessica up & RUN over a mile carrying her! *He wrote a book called MOB VI that gives in depth details regarding this mission.* A MUST read! The details are insane. ---
A few details are: the SEALs jumped from their plane during a Sandstorm! Several of the SEALS were dragged hundreds of feet in the awful wind. 2. They also had to wear EXTRA plates of Kevlar protection because they were sure the bandits had AK47s, RPG’s, etc.. so they were EACH weighed down with approx 80 pounds of equipment! (Way more than normal) And they still had to walk/jog miles on land to get to her with all this extra weight , plus carry her!)

@@Freespeechisgone A little banter here... My daughter is married to the son of a recently retired navy SEAL and her husband is currently stationed in Pearl Harbor on an Arleigh Burke destroyer. Her father in law was on Team 2, 10 and DevGru.(Team 6). He's a true badass and one of the most humble people you'll ever meet.. I'm army and my daughters father in law's father was an Army Ranger.. Navy SEALS have tried out to be Army Rangers.. No Army Ranger has ever tried out to be a Navy SEAL.. 😊 God bless our spec ops. Fun fact, my daughter was over visiting the in laws the other day while her husband is in school, she showed up and her father in law said.. OH YOU NEED TO SEE THIS.. His wife rolled her eyes.. They went back and he handed her a pair of dual NODS.... My daughter and a career retired Navy SEAL were walking around in the basement with the lights off with nods on giggling like children... 😊😊

True it's what he said... But, what they leave out is as soon as a shipping company takes contracts outside of Europe, they have to follow the contract that the sailors agree with when they go on these "trips". It isn't the Danish military saying "naaah you're on your own". The EU is has to follow the laws that the contracts sets, sadly enough in these cases. Where the US has far more reach outside and can actually do something. What was great in this case.

US Army Combat Veteran here. I was based in Djibouti Africa 2012-2013. I remember this mission well. I was a member of ERF (Embassy Response Force). This unit was made after Bengazi. Our job was to fly in and rescue US Embassy personnel if the Embassy was under attack and needed to be evacuated. They would leave in the helicopter we brought. We would stay. You asked how someone could risk everything for someone that they don't even know. Simple, really. If my wife or kids were in trouble and needed rescue, I hope someone would stop at nothing to bring them home safely. I am out of the Army now. I am a Volunteer Firefighter in my hometown. Still saving lives.

Great reaction. What a lot of people don't realize is that it is not about the money when the USA refuses to pay terrorist ransoms. This mission to rescue her was reported to have cost in excess of $28 million and as much as $40 million. Between the SEALs who trained for weeks for the mission, spy satellites that were redirected to locate and track the movements of the bandit camps, the logistics to have all the military assets in place to support a mission like that, it all adds up to insane amounts of money that most nations would not consider spending to rescue hundreds of hostages much less two aid workers, of whom only one is an American. It wasn't even motivated by politics either because Obama never even mentioned the successful rescue in the biggest speech of the year a few hours later.

If $45 million was paid there was no guarantee she would be released unharmed. Besides an example needed to be made for anyone planning to kidnap Americans of the consequences.

Seal Team Six are my neighbors. We live in the same area and shop at the same stores and eat in the same restaurants but you don't know their identities. I have met some seals through the years. I lived next door to one. They are ready in a second's notice. I am so grateful for what they do. They have made this world a better and safer place.

From other videos I've seen on this rescue, Jessica later learned that the charity she was working for were warned of the possible kidnapping, but they never told her. They told Paul, her Danish coworker, but not her. Turns out that the security detail they had used many times was involved in the kidnapping and were paid off by the bandits. Maybe this is why they had everything in place, like the phone numbers blocked, ahead of time. Needless to say, she was very upset and never went back. Who could blame her. Awesome story though and a warning to others thinking of kidnapping Americans. America is probably the only country that would have done this.

I just looked up Justin Sheffield, the leader of the operation that rescued them on his publisher's site. Wow.
"Most of the missions that he has conducted are still classified and clandestine. The most notable mission that has been declassified and published was the raid in Somalia that led to the hostage rescue of a female American citizen, and a Danish citizen. Senior Chief Sheffield was the team leader who planned the raid and led the jump, which has turned out to be the most difficult operation conducted by Seal Team Six to this day. He was the member of the unit who, after killing several of the hostage-takers, jumped on, protected with his body, and then picked up and carried to safety the American Hostage."

When I was a kid my dad was in the Navy, us military kids are called Navy Brats, Army Brats, etc.. Anyway, my dad had a friend who was a Seal. To look at him you would think he was the youth group pastor at the local church. You would never guess he was a trained, and very efficient, hostage "negotiator". Never ever judge a book by its cover.

The emotions are so torn. On one hand, I was so proud of my son and yet petrified anytime they were sending him to different posts. I prayed and cried often from missing him and wondering if i would ever hug him again. However, he came from a military family, so i understand why he chose this life. After 5 years and getting 90% disability caused by jumping out of planes, i am still torn. Upset knowing the future pain he will feel but greatful he still came home.

Didn't know this story. 25 Jan is my mother's birthday. She's also passed. I live in South Africa. Though less dangerous than other African countries, you're in danger here no matter where you stay. I risk my life if I want to go for a walk alone where I live. Worse yet, my husband is armed response in the area where we live and I can hear gunshots whenever he's on duty. My heart sinks into my soles and I start quivering and it doesn't stop until I hear his voice and know that he's safe.

Whenever I hear a story like this, I always try to put myself in the victims' shoes. I think of the paralyzing fear, the feeling of hopelessness, the feeling of being alone with no one to reach out to for comfort. I feel by doing this I am recognizing the strength and human nature to survive of those individuals.

Great reaction, thank you. I used to work in technical support for a couple of U.S. Spec Op units. What the average person would see as bravery, is to them the end result of extreme training, determination, and duty. I dealt with two teams in particular and the members I knew were outwardly average and normal in most respects. In the movies they would have you believe they walked through life big, bad, large and in charge on a daily basis, but in reality you wouldn’t know them from your neighbor. The difference comes when it’s time to go to work. As it was presented to me it’s the culmination of months of training, weeks of preparation, hours of boredom and waiting, followed by minutes of adrenaline, and seconds of terror, rinse and repeat. They are amazing human beings, though imagine being superman, but mortal.

I can’t speak for all Military personnel/veterans, and some of them may disagree, but that selflessness is engrained into you as a Soldier. It starts in Basic with your “Battle Buddy”, in permanent duty station it becomes the Unit, and by extension Americans.
In a rescue operation the life of the hostage/hostages is more valuable than the lives of the team

Valor, which courage is an essence of, is a compelling ethos that gives structure to life. People who build a life dedicated to such an ethos, are empathetically rewarded for their acts of charity, kindness, honor, and Valor. There is never a fair judgment for those who practice Valor, for there are no weights to measure such spiritual gains that come from Honor, Duty, Courage, and the many other characteristics like Valor. Lacking the understanding of the reward makes understanding those who choose to live by such ethe as Valor, Honor, and Duty, difficult.

I was nine years old. I remember waking up to my dad yelling “oh my god, oh my god”. My dad was always very stoic and didn’t really show emotion. So I knew something was wrong. My mom walked me to the bus stop (she never did this) and I remember a lot of kids parents called in cuz they were scared of potential additional attacks. I had my 10th birthday at the mall of America (largest mall in America) in November that year and a lot of my friends didn’t come because of their parents were still worried.
