The ability is a triggered ability that checks when the creature dies. It doesn't replace the effect. That means it doesnt interact with death triggers in a way that hoses them.
Holy shit, the only thing remotely close to "Mercenary Tribal" over 20 years since the tribe was introduced. Might even be closer to 25 years by now, but don't quote me on that.
You are correct about Dauthi Voidwalker shutting off Mari's first ability. DV's ability is a replacement effect which happens first, then Mari would never even see the cards. If they were both replacement effects or both triggered abilities, then this would work as with replacement effects you decide the order in which they replace.
I don't think that's the case. Dauthi needs to see it "hit" the graveyard for its replacement affect, whereas Mari will see it die before it hits the graveyard
@@xhaser56 Nope, replacement effects will happen first, they have to as they replace that action that is about to happen. Trigger abilities happen after the game sees that event happen. Replacement effects also don't use the Stack, they just replace how something that would resolve from the Stack happens, whereas triggered abilities do add a new thing to the Stack.
@@xhaser56 Sure thing. It's crazy rules interactions like this that prompted me to create this channel and do what I can to help clear up confusion in Commander games. Glad to help out.
Just ordered a playset of etrata after seeing this, think I see a fun, wacky pioneer or modern deck in the works. Also ordered a fifth etrata for the commander deck I always wanted to make with her
Throw in Conspiracy (the enchantment, not the card type) to change all cards in your deck and on the battlefield to Mercenary. Then use your Mercenary tutors to bring stuff out.
Dies means goes to the graveyard. So Dauthi replaces that going to the graveyard with the card instead going to exile. No death trigger will occur while Voidwalker is out.
My first deck I built was mono black. The commander is Vito so it's all themed around gaining life and using that to deal damage. Although I might be swapping it around and move him to the 99 and make Krrik the commander.
I could be wrong about this, but I think Dauthi Voidwalker does work because you can choose which trigger resolves first. So, if Mari and Dauthi's triggers both hit the stack, then you can have Mari's trigger resolve first exiling the creature with a hit counter. Then Dauthi tries to exile the card with a Void counter, but since it's already exiled, it can't do so again and fizzles. Unless I'm wrong, both work. So, Dauthi is 100% a card you can run with this commander, both to exile cards when Mari isn't on the field, and also to exile everything that Mari doesn't hit.
Deathtouch tribal is an archetype that we always wanted a commander for. Hooded Blightfang from M21 would be a banger then because he makes every creature with deathtouch drain life on attack, granting you a lot of value.
@@planetfucksquad he's in green tho, which doesn't have as good deathtouch support. yeah, there's some dinky creatures with it, a couple that grant other creatures it, and of course, fynn, but that's really it. ideally a golgari deathtouch tribal commander would be the best, so then you can include fynn, hooded blightfang, archetype of finality, etc.
it works with voidwalker. Voidwalker is a replacement effect when it goes into the graveyard, and mari is a triggered ability when it dies (aka leaves battlefield for graveyard) the battlefield. so it actually should work, sorry had to edit because i didnt use proper words
Kelsien the plague. Does this work with him? You're still killing the creature, they just go to exile instead of the Graveyard and all he looks for is death triggers
I think this commander is broken. for 3 mana. it's a little strong for the price. rouges are really good and a played creature type and idk it just seems a bit too strong for 3 mana
Eddie, why didn't you correct mitch about rift sower....second time today he's mentioned that card when he meant to say riftsweeper. Letting him do it once was questionable, but twice in two separate videos....come on Eddie, do better...

I've been waiting so long for a mercenary tribal commander!
Yup, you got it right Mitch. Dauthi Voidwalker is a replacement effect, so it supercedes Mari's triggered effect. A complete nonbo unfortunately

Going into my Queen Marchesa deck 😍

Yea no dauthi for this, more like assassin/vampire/rouge support
I like this channel when it’s making cool budget decks but is anyone else kinda beat on the Eddie thing?
I’ve been brewing both a Mercenary tribal deck and a Kelsian, the Plague deck. Back to the drawing board.
