After almost 50 years of listening to them, it can still move the emotions in me when they play something as timeless and ethereal as Nights in White Satin. I believe it was moving her, emotionally. Welcome to the club!
This is the kind of music i grew up with in the 60s. So good.
The whole album "Days of future passed" is a masterpiece. It took the idea of the concept album to a new level.
and originally it was released simply as a demo stereophonic album
And never surpassed
The whole album makes you realise how finite life is, oh bugger!
They have a DVD of a life perfomance with a full orchestra: "Days of Future Passed" They do the whole album back-to-back. And they were in their 70's when it was recorded. Truly cool. just watched it last night.
The Moody Blues is one of the extremely few who consider the London Symphony Orchestra to be a backup band!

Drummer Graeme Edge just passed away a few days ago.
The song, including the extended orchestral parts was written by the band when they were in their early 20's. Genius.
Actually Justin Hayward was 19 when he wrote "Nights." Precociously talented angel, isn't he?
When you place a full orchestra behind a classic piece of music ...this is what you get ......just like the 2006 live performance of Whiter Shade of Pale ....

Oh boy.... Had me in tears...... This is the music I grew up with. Whatever people say about the 60s and 70s the music was the best in history.
Yes , now you can understand why music in the sixties and early seventies was so fantastic. It was not just great to hear , it was also a education we all needed. If you just found the Moody Blues get ready for a great education in life. Beatles and Moody Blues were blowing peoples heads off with info. Glad you found them.

The birth of progressive rock. They recorded this in the mid 1960s and here they were, 40+ years later, still making beautiful music.

Had the pleasure of seeing The Moody Blues twice in my life and they were great live. What a show and what a band. Very good and emotional reaction to a great song.
Now, think about how amazing that orchestration at the end (and beginning) is. Now consider: it's exactly like that on the studio album. And this was their FIRST album (in their current incarnation). Not a bad start huh?
This song was originally released by The Moody Blues in 1967 and is a masterpiece. It's just as moving now as it was then. The full album version is longer than this though. You even made me teary eyed.👍😄❤️💥
And Miss.... Every person in that hall probably had tears on their cheeks as well, while they listened to this beautiful music! :'( -- Let's see if the rappers or the grunge musicians can do the same! :-O

One of the most beautiful songs ever written along with Whiter Shade of Pale and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The lead singer Justin Hayward also had a solo hit with a sing called Forever Autumn from a Rock Opera based on War of The Worlds you would love that song as well.

You should give a listen to the whole album, 'Days of Future Passed', which this song is from. This is just one part of the story told on the album.

Welcome to the era of when musicians had pure talent. I loved watching the music take you to a place you have never been to before. This is music I grew up with and I'm very thankful.
Remember, they wrote all parts of this in 1967 when they were in their early 20s. As the finale to Days Of Future Past, Nights will indeed remain 'timeless'. Symphonic Rock was born with the MELOTRON.

I would bet a whole lot of us over the years have been emotionally moved by this great song. And we still are.
There are songs from this era , that can transport you to a time in your life , where you experienced great pleasure . Or where you experienced great pain. It's nice to listen with someone who is not from that era , and see their reaction , and wonder where they were transported .
Unfortunately and fortunately pain and pleasure run synonymous with each other it seems to always be bitter sweet
Very haunting gut wrenching song for those that understand the lyrics he is expressing. "Nights in white satin never reaching the end" is reference to the satin sheets she bought him just before she broke it off. "Letters I have written never meaning to send" With 20 versions sitting in the trash he never mails his letter to try and gain her back. Why? "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" Did she ever really love him? "Gazing at people some hand in hand" seeing others in love only brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through you can't understand" Unless you have had a broken heart you can't understand. I cry every time I hear this song. I wonder where she is how she is doing. Damn this song all to hell its so beautifully written yet so haunting.

I came to listen to the music but stayed for your genuine and emotional reaction!!! Great job with this one, Ovuada!! The Moody Blues are amazing, and they had many wonderful songs and great hits! Before you are finished with them make sure you react to Question and Tuesday Afternoon. And if you enjoy some flute music in your rock and roll let me recommend "Can You See" by the Marshall Tucker Band and a live performance from the late 1970's of the band Jethro Tull performing "Locomotive Breath"!! It isn't just the fantastic music from Moody Blues, its the memories associated with the music. Where were you, who were you with, what happened? I heard this when it first came out. It was amazing then, just as it is now. Yes, I have some very fond memories of where and when.

If you love this song, you will love the entire album it’s absolutely incredible. As someone else said here, there were many bands during the 60s and 70s that were equally as talented, and of course the orchestra just adds another dimension to the songs. This is the music we grew up with. I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and when I write my own music, I can’t help but to add many parts to my songs, because this is what I believed music should sound like. 😅

I was lucky enough to see the Moody Blues live when they first sang "Knights in White Satin", I was a teenager, the song made me cry, and still does to this day. Amazing music and feelings in the world back then. x

I have to echo the sentiments of so many of the other commenters. The entire Days of Future Passed album is a masterpiece, and something to be taken in its entirety, on a rainy day, alone, with good headphones, and maybe a nice glass of wine or tea. A modern requiem.

The MB album "To Our Children's Children's Children" is an underrated gem.
This song is so old. Back in 1977 our grade school would play this as the last song for the last dance in 7th and 8th grade. We have always loved this song. Look how much older he is and still can belt it out. THIS IS MUSIC. THIS IS WHAT WE GREW UP WITH. I LOVE THIS SONG.

@@chrisfilip3427, that's something that I never knew. Both the speaker and the poem always wrapped up this song beautifully. Not many people remember that the poem was part of the song. It isn't finished until I hear the poem. It's just not the same.

Justin wrote this song (lead singer) when he was 19 and in love. Later, he married the girl he wrote it for ❤❤ I was 17 when this was released and also in love, but never married him!!
I haven't gotten to the end yet -- BUT I had to say you NAILED it ..... this song is TIMELESS ....... heart wrenching FOREVER ...... & I'm pretty sure the flute player is an original member of the band ...

I had the privilege and good fortune to see them live in concert at least 10 times.This was from their debut album 1960s
Missing the mellotron sound for me on the chorus gives it that unearthly ethereal she should listen to the studio one with headphones it blows you away.
Back in the day, the great bands played because of their love of music instead of fame and fortune.
I loved this song in 1970-71. My family knows at my funeral to play two songs. Nights In White Satin with the poetry at the end and Stairway to Heaven.

You should listen to the entire album. It runs from dawn to night ending with this song. You will love it.

This is my mother’s fav song by The Moody Blues. We’ve seen them live twice together. Ray Thomas was the flautist, and he died in 2018, at the age of 76. He was one of the founding members of The Moody Blues in the mid-1960’s.
Earlier this year I was present for the death of my 90yo mother-in-law, who has been my other mother. My own mother will be 87 next month. She will be one who will most likely be alone when her day comes, because they are such different individuals. I’ve long wanted to sing this for my mum, as my eulogy for her, at her burial, because it represents her in so many ways. Don’t know if I could make it through it, and now that you’ve heard it, you can probably understand why I probably couldn’t do it.
I appreciate this this is the song that introduced you to such a great band.
