“You’ve come to shake my hand” for me this is the most powerful lyric and message about life and a failed relationship ever, it still takes my breath away even after all these years… ABBA = Pure Perfection ❤️💔
from wikipedia: However, Ulvaeus admitted that the heartache of their breakup inspired the song, but noted that the words in the song should not be taken literally.[1] He said: "Neither Agnetha nor I were winners in our divorce."[
The way she sings the song, it has always sounded to me (even before I knew about here divorce) that she is talking about the other woman when she refers to "the winner", who kept the man that she trusted and loved. I read that she is singing "I lost you, the winner (she) is taking all I loved". Not the meaning that her ex-husband won.
Yes, this was and is .. amazing .. by far best ever song and performance ... In fact, out of this World for our simple mortal souls ... This song is immortal like ABBA and wil be there.. forever
It's funny that women think it's always about them, they don't believe that a man has any feelings at all. Björn wrote the song from his heart and yet his estranged wife sings it which must feel so strange for him.
It was very brave of her to sing about her own life like that to the world and a lot of the world were listening, because Abba were massive, really massive. They had lots of great songs like S.O.S. Chiquitita, Waterloo and Thank You For The Music just to name a few. Check them out they were wholesome.
Everyone thinks she sings about her own relationship when Benny Andersson (piano) stated many times the text is fictional. Yes and we all know they all had an relationship but this text is still fiction. Greetings from Sweden.
she's not singing about her own life, she was glad to get out of the marriage, plus tell me, if it's about her who is the winner??? her or bjorn? there isn't a winner because neither of them were seeing other people at the time
@@ajayjackson7727 Bjorn got together with one of the backing singers, right after the split. Agnetha was left with their children and had to keep going with the band and working along side them, Benny and Bjorn also wrote Our Last Summer, Benny was having an affair while married to Frieda. Frieda sang it, a song about a relationship ending. She made it about her life, because she wasn't okay about that divorce.
I did not pay attention to ABBA when they were big because I wasn't into upbeat vacuous pop music. I had no idea they were capable of such thoughtful and poignant lyrics. Lines like: "The Gods may throw the dice, their minds as cold as ice."...definitely not mindless pop fluff. RESPECT for ABBA!
The craziest thing about this song is that she is singing what her ex-husband is telling her by these lyrics. It's about their breakup, but the lyrics were written by her ex-husband. It just makes the whole song hit even deeper. Incredible professionalism of them to have been able to continue working together.
Agreed! People forget they are Björn’s lyrics. However, they had already been separated, the official divorce became official in 1980. But Björn was already seeing Lena who was a good friend of Agnetha’s. The press was on to this and they would deny the rumors for the sake of Keeping Abba alive. Eventually the story had to break - “The game is on again, a lover or a friend?“ and in the end, I guess, the winner was Lena.
Well they didn't continue as a band much after this, last album the year after, announced band breakup 3 years later. Reunion album 41 years later, with the women not showing up for the launch livestream...
@@OperaJH So true - It amazes me the lyrics Björn’s wrote for Agnetha to sing. They seem so empathetic to what she was going through. See especially the Girl with the Golden Hair set of three songs. But he always said they they were inspired by what they were going through, but don't tell that story. Because of the lyrics it makes you thing the guy was the winner and the woman (Agnetha) was the loser. Of this song he says he wrote the lyrics while drunk. So - was he the Winner? My take is that they both think it was the opposite. Agnetha has said it was here favorite song to sing. Agnetha wanted to stop touring and focus on raising their children and that's what she did. She also didn't want to tour anymore due to valid fears of stalkers as fans were acting insane especially in response to "the blond". Björn wrote the song the way he did - making himself the bad guy - knowing it would play better by fitting with the audience's expectations. Björn & Benny went on to write musicals after this - and you can see they were already going down that path with the last albums and songs like this.
Every single time I hear this song my tears run down I can’t help it. Thank you ABBA for this beautiful song. Thank you Agneta fir singing it the way you did💖
Hi babe, great to see your reaction to one of the greatest bands ever. Abba have always been always been real favourites and it's brilliant to see them back.
Only the lyrics of this song are so touchy; but then comes along Agnète with her crystel clear voice making this heartbreaking! All time masterpiece song!
I´m happy because ABBA is coming back and release a new album almost 40 years later. I just listening "Don´t shut me donw", magic is still here.. Thank you Abba. I growing up with your music 1970´s...
Very powerful song. Agnetha was so strong singing this song that could not have been easy for her. ABBA SUPERGROUP THE BEST GROUP ON THE PLANET SUPER TROOPERS LOVE ABBA. Please react to more of ABBA songs. They were brilliant live in concert. If you can please react to ABBA live in concert. Love your reactions.
I first heard it at 8 yrs old and loved it without knowing the meaning, am now almost 50 and love it much more. A true gem, and judging from your reaction you will also love it the more you hear and understand it. Thx.
ABBA was so big in Europe in the seventies. I lived in a small village in the Netherlands and our bakery sold ABBA pictures for 5 cents a package. I collected them and glued them in a composition book. When I was 12 my parents bought their first record player and bought me my very first record, from ABBA of course. The music- and gossip magazines wrote everything about their private lives, their relation struggles and divorces. That's why this song was such a punch in the gut. It was definitely not only about the end of them as a band. It was about their relation struggles. I always wondered how I would feel if my ex wrote a song for me to sing. That's crazy. But these people were (and still are) professionals all the way.
Everyone can relate to their words and music. We’ve all had the emotions; joys and disappointments... THAT is why their music will survive. It’s honesty set to good melodies.
Welcome to ABBA, your life will change now. I bought this on vinyl the day it was released! It’s my favourite song of all time by anyone ever. Timeless and for ever
I was 17. 40 years ago. So cool watching today's generation listen to the music of my generation. I can best describe the 70's music era as, pure emotion. You are truly lovely Morenikeji.
In 1974 won ABBA the Song Festival with the number Waterloo , but all songs of ABBA are beautiful! I love to hear this song again. Thank you Morenikeji for your choice! Love from Holland and a kiss !🙋🏼♂️🇳🇱👍😘
you discovered one of the most popular bands in the music history. in the 60s, 70s, 80s artists used to have another kind of "language" in their professional works . The Winner takes it all is almost a poem very big , emotional ...a kind of freudian catarsis to talk about love ........about the end of an ilusion, a marriage dream........Beautiful...
The composition, the arrangements, the mix of all the voices, the sound very clear and very stable of Agnethas voice, the movement of the chorus behind.. all these things mixed together shake our hearts and touch us deeply even 40 years after… thanks to all these bands through the 70s and 80s that were really capable of writing songs like that… Thank you so much..
There's a reason, why ABBA were so successful, World Wide, through decades of no1"s and its called TALENT. Even today it shines through. You should listen to more of their songs, the list is long but everyone a winner guaranteed! Without doubt, the best group ever.
"SOMEONE WAY DOWN HERE LOSES SOMEONE DEAR..........." Lovely reaction video to this very sad song from super-group ABBA from my teen years. Thank you for it!
Nice reaction! I've loved Abba from 1974. They made wonderful music videos with fantastic costumes that were very “of their time” when few other musicians were doing it. Four good-looking, seemingly kindhearted Swedes - what’s not to love? And no scandals, no addiction, no drama, no one’s secretly a terrible person. Their relationships ran their courses, yet they remained consummate professionals and friends. I think that’s extraordinarily difficult to pull off, which to me is quite a testament to their characters.
Hello again, so nice to I see your second reaction to ABBA I love so much the Sweden pop group ABBA They have more than 20 worldwide hits in several countries of all continents, included Waterloo S.O.S. Mamma Mia Fernando Dancing Queen Take a chance on me Chiquitita Gimme gimme gimme The winner takes it all Super trouper "The winner takes it all" is one of their greatest hits, #1 in UK and several countries, #8 in Billboard U.S. and #1 in Adult Contemporary U.S. "The winner takes it all" have a deep lyric writen by the guitarist Björn and singing at lead vocal by his ex-wife Agnetha, that gives an emotional and powerful interpretation with her lovely voice note: Agnetha & Björn was separated at the end of 1978 (with two young children) but the legal divorce was in the middle of 1980 after this, Björn wrote this incredible lyrics (obviously included part of your own history), and the songwriters Björn & Benny gives Agnetha to sing it at first She cry, but then put all your feelings and emotions and talents to this amazing performing I hope to see you in another reaction to ABBA songs I suggest you one of their most worldwide hit: "Mamma Mia" Stay safe and be care And have a great week!
My divorce was a blessing but I saw an interview with Agnetha (the blonde singer) stating they tried to keep their divorce amicable. But no divorce is amicable. Hit me hard. This song makes me cry, especially when they say the loser is standing small - an illusion to their children.
When they were still happy couples.. The boys Björn (guitars, lead vocals, lyrics) and Benny (keys, music compositions) teamed up together. They happened to have girlfriends who could sing too, and they tried them, like so many groups in those days, to provide backing chorus. In the recording studio it showed how amazing the girls voices sounded together if they sung lead. The outcome is well known.
Hello, nice yo see you again with another reaction to the Sweden pop group ABBA, the leads in 70s, the decade post BEATLES "The winner takes it all" is for me the best interpretation of a song that I heard in my life by any singer or band It is interpretation, because it is more than just singing, it is also acting and transmitting, and Agnetha does all that and on a superlative level Beyond the morbid that the story of this song produces (the lyrics about a divorce, written by the guitarist Björn, and sung by his ex-wife Agnetha), the structure reflects a change: it is the first time in all ABBA songs that whoever has the leading voice has been alone from beginning to end, She goes one way and the choirs go the other (they do not add up, they remain in the background) and in the end She is left alone passive and exposed, while the chorus and the music finish so up That is why I feel that Agnetha does an extraordinary performance (extraordinary: out of the ordinary) Her face is always very expressive and accompanies the various tones and nuances of her majestic vocalization. "The winner takes it all" is a great song, it's in my ABBA Top 5 It is the favorite of British fans, but fundamentally is the one chose by Björn and Agnetha and Their own words is the one that is worth more I like you for a new reaction to the classic "Chiquitita" or "Fernando" My best wishes for You from Buenos Aires Argentina and GOD bless you!
I remember buying the album, bringing it home and playing. When heard Winner takes it all I instantly that it was one of the finest songs ever by any artist. I played it over and over again.
Not only has a song never effected me anywhere near how this does It also still does to this day How thats possible shows what an incredible song this is legendary lyricall masterpiece sung by an ANGEL
You listen so thoughtfully, and feel so deeply. I always enjoy your reactions...and listening to your impressions spoken in that lovely, captivating accent is a bonus! Would love to hear more about your Yoruba culture, customs and history. By the way, I just saw your reaction to Santana's "Black Magic Woman" yesterday evening. Your spontaneous joy at certain points in the song was absolutely delightful...and your dancing? Awesome!💖💖💖
The song represents the breakdown of the musicians' personal relationship. And yet they go into the studio together and record songs together. Although sad and disappointed, they still have the strength to perform together.
Hi Morenikeji, you may be interested to know that ABBA just released 2 new recordings, one of them, "Don't Shut Me down" sounds very much like a follow up to this song

(obviously included part of your own history),
and the songwriters Björn & Benny gives Agnetha to sing it
at first She cry, but then put all your feelings and emotions and talents to this amazing performing
I hope to see you in another reaction to ABBA songs
I suggest you one of their most worldwide hit:
"Mamma Mia"
Stay safe and be care
And have a great week!
Amazing song , I heared it over and over again with my Late mom in her last Days. So Powerful Song
One of the best voices ever.❤️
I love this woman. She listens to stuff I grew up listening to.
This is the best song ever written!
I felt your spirit rise out of your heart when you were hearing ABBA. Bless you sister
Best group ever by far an always will be
Still get goosebumps listening to this
This song is a masterpiece. The writing is incredible and the voice so haunting...and sad
My divorce was a blessing but I saw an interview with Agnetha (the blonde singer) stating they tried to keep their divorce amicable. But no divorce is amicable. Hit me hard. This song makes me cry, especially when they say the loser is standing small - an illusion to their children.
The lyrics to this song and the story behind ABBA would bring a tear to a glass eye!
All these years later still gives goosebumps
The official video of this is a real tear-jerker. The last part, where her voice cracks gets me every time!
The best ABBA Song. Gimme Gimme.
Hello, nice yo see you again with another reaction to the Sweden pop group ABBA, the leads in 70s, the decade post BEATLES
"The winner takes it all" is for me the best interpretation of a song that I heard in my life by any singer or band
It is interpretation, because it is more than just singing, it is also acting and transmitting, and Agnetha does all that and on a superlative level
Beyond the morbid that the story of this song produces (the lyrics about a divorce, written by the guitarist Björn, and sung by his ex-wife Agnetha), the structure reflects a change: it is the first time in all ABBA songs that whoever has the leading voice has been alone from beginning to end,
She goes one way and the choirs go the other (they do not add up, they remain in the background)
and in the end She is left alone passive and exposed, while the chorus and the music finish so up
That is why I feel that Agnetha does an extraordinary performance (extraordinary: out of the ordinary)
Her face is always very expressive and accompanies the various tones and nuances of her majestic vocalization.
"The winner takes it all" is a great song, it's in my ABBA Top 5
It is the favorite of British fans,
but fundamentally is the one chose
by Björn and Agnetha
and Their own words is the one that is worth more
I like you for a new reaction to the classic "Chiquitita" or "Fernando"
My best wishes for You
from Buenos Aires Argentina
and GOD bless you!
I remember buying the album, bringing it home and playing. When heard Winner takes it all I instantly that it was one of the finest songs ever by any artist. I played it over and over again.
This is among one of the most beautiful songs ABBA recorded. I am glad you listened to this classic song.🤗🎹🎵🎶🎼
some things never changes and ABBA still remains
listen to Agnetha's voice quiver when she sings the verse 'I don't wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
And I understand
You've come to shake my hand'
Not only has a song never effected me anywhere near how this does
It also still does to this day
How thats possible shows what an incredible song this is legendary lyricall masterpiece sung by an ANGEL
Awesome!💖💖💖
Thanks a lot!❤️❤️❤️
Possibly the best soprano to lend her voice to popular music.
This song is timeless can touch no matter what generation or time actually telling the end of Abba and there relationships breaking up !
I am right there with you. Don't Shut Me Down is referring back to this song.
