    Percy’s mid to late 70s playing was a huge influence on The Muffins. I believe his Eno work was responsible for Billy Swann switching over to his fretless bass.

    It's so great to hear an extended interview with Percy! As Derek alluded, Percy has a more "low-key" persona in the media and hasn't courted celebrity - basically letting his music speak for itself. This was such a pleasant, informative chat with a phenomenonal artist!

    Awesome conversation. Jaco was an amazing player, but who really inspired my playing was Percy, along with Mick Karn and Patrick Djivas. These guys are never mentioned enough.

    I'm a drummer (was) but when i picked up a Bass i wanted to sound like Percy (a fellow welsh man) He has inspired so many bass players.
    I'd say he is the Allan H of Bass

    Great interview, Dereck. Completely enjoyed that. Percy Jones looking fit and sounding sharp at 75. I knew he had played on a lot of albums, but I had no IDEA! Wow! What a prolific musician!

    Thanks for allowing Percy to elaborate what is going with the Brand X sham, that’s horrible. One of my favorite albums by Percy is the Tunnels album. I played that album to death.

    • @synthonaplinth5980
      @synthonaplinth5980 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, shame that not many people know what is going on with Brand X, especially the horrible way that JG passed. My gf and I went to see them in Michigan a few years back, Percy was humble and unassuming and KG was a flat out goofball. My CDs are autographed by Percy and John, ONLY. There was just something 'off' about Scott Weinberger, it's really no surprise to hear that he is behind the disgusting attempted coup of the band's name.

    Awesome interview. It's utterly astounding to me how many amazing musicians Britain produced during the 60s and 70s. My theory is that during the 1800s they were incredibly peaceful and prosperous, and many homes had pianos. They also had a lot of outdoor bandstands, no doubt made possible by their prosperity. Then the first half of the 1900s kept them busy with the 2 world wars. After the wars they were able to get back to business. Just a theory.

      Hi, I also think a lot about the abundance of great brittish artists. It seems art schools there helped a lot of kids with artistic pretensions like Bowie and Lennon claimed in interviews. Also the choir tradition in church, the brass bands and so on. Its an interesting subject for a book although it may exist already. Cheers

    I've followed Percy's career closely since first hearing Brand X in 1976. Such an innovator with a unique and very special approach to the fretless bass. So under appreciated too. This is a great interview. Percy is so humble and self effacing. A one off.

  • @tonydrake821

    A beautiful thing about these interviews is how they reveal the normal lives and humble nature of the guests. It's so nice to hear about an Eno recording session from such a down to earth point of view.

    Hey Dereck, I too, was introduced to BRAND X while being a big GENESIS fan, and was told by a friend, of PHIL COLLINS playing in this other band. Through that I first heard of PERCY. I never bought any BRAND X albums. Outside of a few names of musicians and groups that were talked about between the both of you, there was a lot that I was unfamiliar with. And that is the main reason I enjoyed this talk between the both of you. I learned so much. It added to my music knowledge. And what a nice guy he comes across as. Another great job on your part. Take care Dereck

    I'm hearing alot of "Wow's" coming from you as you interview. That is exactly what goes thru my mind when I listen to Mr. Jones play bass... Lots & lots of wows. Sounds like Percy has loads of ink in his fat passport.
    'Fat Passport" sounds like a name for an album or a tour. Sorry I get carried away.

    Brand X is Percy Jones, Robin Lumley and John Goodsall (RIP). I am glad to know from Percy about what these characters are trying to pull by masquerading as Brand X. It might be time for Percy to "lawyer up" to get those guys to account for what they owe him, Robin and others.

    • @ornebatmagoo7128
      @ornebatmagoo7128 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "lawyer up"... with the money they're not receiving? I expect the reason they're going public is that musicians typically haven't $400/hour to pay layers, let alone a protracted lawsuit for 2 years and upwards of 200k in fees. Reality is so basic that most people can't Occam's Razor their way through it. Things are rough for artists for a reason.

    • @ericarmstrong6540
      @ericarmstrong6540 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ornebatmagoo7128 Contingency fee. Not everyone charges $400.00 per hour, if that's the route one has to take.

      @@ericarmstrong6540
      Few if any lawyers would take any case like this under contingency. Legal firms have to put out massive amounts of funds to get something rolling. That being said, Percy deserves Justice.

    • @ericarmstrong6540
      @ericarmstrong6540 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealDannAlexander You're right, contingency fee is not the route that most lawyers would take, but some might and only expect payment of legal expenses, which might be minimal in a case like this. I hope Percy gets his just rewards for the work he put in while playing for Brand X.

    • @doogie-mk2lq
      @doogie-mk2lq 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ericarmstrong6540
      Contingency usually depends on a good chance of winning the case. Which means having the law well on your side. The other way is an easy case with a big payout. Lawyers will take a bigger percentage. It's speculation.
      Lawyers aren't born that way they have to pay for school. "Lawyer" & "kindness of their heart" are rarely found in the same sentence.
      Or maybe find one with great musical taste!

    WOW! Thanks for this. Appreciate Derek's interview and back and forth with Percy,. What great person to interview Percy with Dereck being a bass player and a sonic artist and a music historian of sorts. Derek mentioned things and asked things that made this a top shelf interview. Percy Jones such a inspirational unique Bass Player, well many others were copying Jaco's fretless style Percy created something special in the same era and beyond. Love his playing with others and his solo, so much energy, imagination and feeling. When Percy plays you would know it's Percy. I play Percy Jones for people today and they get blown away!

    What a fabulous interview. Percy is undoubtedly one of the best of the best!
    Back in the real Facebook page days, I kept asking Brand X to come play at the Birchmere here in Alexandria, VA, and eventually they did. What an unforgettable experience that was. The amazing part of the story was after the show while he was signing a few of my records, I asked him about his early TH-cam videos of lightning strikes (long taken down, I believe). He told me his fascination stemmed from being struck by lightning when he was a kid!
    What a fascinating guy and was so honored to have met him. One of my favorite players of all time!

    The problem with Brand X they were labeled as Jazz and they were Progressive Rock. There wasn't anything jazzy about them. That turned off a lot of potential record buyers

    Percy Jones ! Truly one of the greatest, in my humble opinion . During my short life I've heard an awful lot of incredible music thanks to the harmonics of musicians such as Mr. Jones, ( or Jaco etc. . . etc. ). But honestly Percy takes it to a whole new atmospheric level. He always has. Oddly enough I happened to have been listening to his solo album, ( Propeller Music ) just a couple days ago so he was fresh in the forefront of my mind when I was notified about this fantastic long overdue Interview. ( Gentle Giant - Interview )
    Only wished you'd inquired about the Brand X "Manifest Destiny" album. Lots of questions but all in all a very enlightening exchange.
