Amazing. Amazing how Phil Collins had so much great and complicated music is stored up there in his brain. It is far beyond my comprehension. No wonder he was able to play with so many such gifted musicians as he did here. Respect. Total respect.

Brand X is a great band, not very many people have heard of them let alone react to them, so this was a nice surprise. If you are looking for any recommendations for other songs by them, I would suggest Disco Suicide with, like this song, Phil Collins on drums. Sadly, he left in 1979 to pursue his solo career, Brand X is some of his most technical and challenging drumming.

Brand X guitarist, the late John Goodsall, also had a band with drummer Chester Thompson (Zappa, Genesis, etc.) named Fire Merchants. Their 1989 self-titled debut album was pretty good (try "Saladin").

Must agree with your comments. The funk was nice for a while, but then 'we are over it'. But when they went jazzy, it was great. Phil is brilliant. Always involved with the music with different riffs, complimenting the other musicians, he never missed a beat and could rock.

The best Brand X album was not under the artist name Brand X, rather Lancaster and Lumley. It’s a concept album called Marscape and is one of the best fusion albums ever.
Can I get a hell ya?

PERCY JONES. Mr underrepresented as one of the coolest bassist of the Jazz Prog Fusion musicians! Saw them live in a small club in DC in the late 70s. This album was my intro to BX. Raised on Funk, Fusion, Jazz and Prog, they quickly became my ultimate late 70's Fusion band! Similarly, just FYI, check out something else brilliant & obscure that won't get requested. NOVA's album VIMANA with Corrado Rustici - lead guitar, 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars, marimba, lead vocal
Elio D'Anna - tenor and soprano saxophones, flute, synthesiser
Renato Rosset - Fender Rhodes piano, acoustic piano, mini moog, string ensemble clavinet
    Percy Jones - bass guitar
Narada Michael Walden - drums, Fender Rhodes piano
    Phil Collins - percussion
Zakir Hussain - conga Produced by Robin Lumley

Evening, Justin. Dave from London. I may have been rude about Phil Collins' singing on this channel (like earlier today!), but he can Bang The Drum All Day. I saw Brand X live a couple of years after this album came out, and Phil and the band were terrific.
P.S. my song ref Bang The Drum All Day is by Todd Rundgren.

Totally agree about the favorite section, which only got better. The first part could have been done by AI. It will be the expressly human bits that will come to be most treasured, I venture. I will come back to this again and again. Much obliged!

This track reminds me of Robin Lumley's project with various artists, including Brand X -- Peter and The Wolf (1975). There are lots of nice jazz vignettes, with lots of notables playing the parts of different animals, including Brian Eno as the duck (on synth), and not to be outdone, Gary Brooker does some exquisite bird calls on it. One of my Genesis fan friends didn't like it or Brand X, but I always thought it's really cool!

Unbelievable that this is the same guy who drummed on We Can't Dance. This is top-notch playing from all the musicians. I was lucky enough to see a double-header of Peter Hammill and Brand X back in the day. Wonderful.

I mean Phils drumming is still pretty damn great on WCD too lol, listen to fading lights, driving the last spike, dreaming while you sleep and living forever, he sounds great, ita just that there are also poppy songs on that record that dont require him to show out on the drums.

'The Poke' and 'Masques'. They're the first 2 songs on the album 'Masques'. React to them together. Once you do, you'll see why. I agree with you about Born Ugly. I love parts of it, but in its totality, it seemed like they were trying to make it longer than it needed to be. Cool stuff though, regardless.

The first three or four albums from this band are most engaging, but the first two are so full of ideas and virtuosity as to seem ready to implode or some other over-demonstrative activity - those tensions are what makes it irresistible to me. Never far from my playlists.

  • @jameswarner5809
    @jameswarner5809 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Maybe it's the fact that the 'bubbly' effect on the bass makes it more difficult to discern the notes and therefore the novelty of the sound wears off more quickly for you.

The only thing that ever even partially irritated me about this track was that the first section was too repetitive, but otherwise this is a great track - my favorite being the interweaving melodic lines between Robin & John toward the end with Phil's fabulous fills. Can't wait till you get to "Running Of Three" - faster-paced, not as long, but so much going on!

My former drummer jam friend loved BX, he always said, work on your right hand, probably to be able to get the funk right.
Some parts were RTF like and that’s not a bad thing to me.
One thing that I don’t like so much about this and other reaction channels is that it seems if a tune is too this or that it must be inferior. My mind isn’t always that focused on every little detail while I’m listening at home, work, car, etc. Sometimes I am super focused. Only here, do I really try and focus as much as I can and that often leads to disappointment because nothing is perfect.
    Rant over.
    Rent not.
Pls give Los Lobos a chance. Kiko, Colossal Head, The Neighborhood lots of decent stuff. Jeez, two PC songs in one day and no LL… head’s shaking.

Unlike you Justin, I love that almost liquid bass playing tone from Percy Jones in the first section of the track! I think that's what gives this instrumental its unique identity, otherwise it would just be a regular jazz fusion piece.

This cuts right through, the "Medicated Goo". That My brain is being subjected to. Phil doesn't sing(thankfully!), he just bangs the drums blue. For pain, Diazepam & Dilaudid have put me in a haze. But Brand X and the like keep me smiling these days! Meanwhile, I keep 'Traffic'-ing in rhyme. Music, Peace & Love.
