  • If you are lacking energy in the gym and you feel sluggish and weak it's probably not your testosterone levels. Most likely it's because your carbs are too low. I will explain to you how to increase your carb intake to increase your energy levels.

Every since I started putting a couple of spoons of sugar in my coffee in the morning before lifting I have gotten stronger. I drink about 3 cups of coffee and eat a banana with a serving of oat meal with blue berry's in the morning before heading to the gym. I also drank a glass of electro lights. I'm 70 and have been lifting for over 50 years.

I made this mistake myself at one point during a cut.
I did not know enough at the time, but I was able to quickly correct the problem.
My workout routine is also a little bit different during a cut.
I don't do any walking, jogging, running during a bulk. When I am cutting, I do 6 miles a day of walking broken into 3 sessions.

I did keto many times in the past and I stop doing it, because of this you need electrolytes etc. When your body runs out of glycogen you feel like crap.
I cut out the pre workout supplement I was taking it was skyrocketing my blood pressure but one coffee with sugar and sweetener does the trick

I switched to lifting every other day and it helped my energy levels with having that 24hr break between lifting sessions. My go to carbs are sweet potatoes and oatmeal. I also mix spinach in all of my protein shakes and I think Popeye was right because I can tell a difference when I haven't had spinach in a while.

Could cutting carbs have been the right thing to do, but you just didn't give your body enough time to adjust for the energy to return, after your body becomes adapted to drawing energy from protein & fat?

Not for me. Carbs definitely works for me

This is horseshit! Fat takes 9hrs to digest. You cannot combust protein to any large extent. Once you get your fill of amino acids all the remaining protein is converted to a carbohydrate by lopping off the nitrogen molecule. The process is called glycogenesis.
Also, lipolysis largely only happens during recovery. There is no noticeable amount of lipolysis that happens outside of recovery. An insane 4hr training session will give you 10-17hrs of lipolysis. Nothing else can do that. You can't train hard enough to cause this if you don't eat a ton of carbs.
Also, you body will not metabolize fat to any noticeable extent if you don't have an overly large supply of carbohydrates. The brain is extremely disinclined to metabolize fat when you don't eat enough calories to support your current activity level.

Just found your channel. Really enjoying your content. I’m also in my 50’s now. Had joined the gym in my late 40’s, and was going regularly for about 18months. But the pandemic ruined all that. Kept up with home body weight workouts, but was never the same. Started back at the gym in June 23. But now being over 50, really struggling to gain muscle. And there is a massive difference in my strength, from late 40’s to early 50’s. Getting injuries a lot easier too. But I’m in calorie surplus, and I’m doing all the monitoring stuff etc. But I’m gaining fat before muscle. Any tips?

Put in good work on the muscle groups. Try only being 200 calories above maintenance & just stay with a solid routine. The results will come.

The thing I've done to help with preventing injuries has been to slow the rep speed down. It makes the light weight heavy. I can tell a difference in my joints as well. I switched to every other day training with a 3 day cycle. (Chest/Back, Legs, Shoulders/Arms and doing this..I'm hitting the same body part every 6th day.
Eat enough protein and good calories, focus on progressive overload with pounds or TUT, make every rep count and lift each set until you feel that you feel your form breaking down..meaning no sloppy reps.
This has worked for me. I'm 44, not in my 50's, but yeah it's a lot of work to gain in your 40's than in your 20's. "Too bad we gotta get old Stallion."-Apollo Creed.

If I cut anything to slim down, over the years I have learned to cut slow or increase overall energy expenditure, I can eat up to 6 meals a day (including snacks), I would reduce this by 1 meal or reduce content of one meal ie, a morning smoothie could have around 750cals so I would measure this out to have 550cals as an example then eat normal the rest of the day. I would assess this week to week.

I personally eat a relatively high carb breakfast. This is because my workouts are mid morning and I feel the higher carbs a few hours before my workouts as well as after my workouts is very beneficial for energy, strength & recovery.

Should it be grams based on lean mass? If your carrying a lot of fat wouldn’t using the bodyweight calculation cause more fat accumulation?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @Fitafterfifthy
      @Fitafterfifthy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Grams per body weight is the best & easiest formula to use. Your body actually burns more calories digesting protein known as (TEF). The same formula is best for carbs grams x body weight. If you’re taking in the right carbs your body will use carbs for fuel & will assist in fat burning.
