      JMYS - Trawler Specialists I just watched two more of them. One suggestion, when you cut away to a picture of a boat or like the articles in Passagemaker- leave the image in the screen about twice as long as you currently are., we don’t need to rush back to the talking heads. I spend a lot of time pausing in those images.... won’t hurt anything to keep talking in the background with the picture up.
      And again, those other two were really fantastic. I even went to see if you have any seahorse vessels for sale. Nobody can sell a boat like the builder!

    I want to add that the determining factor is to achieve a sufficient inertial force to overcome the drag and friction of the hull, once this is achieved the trawler will run at 5 knots with 80 or 300 hp. This justifies the Engine Wind concept. The problem is the difference in power between one engine and another to gain thrust in less time, this justifies having two engines, it has more power to gain thrust quickly in less time, it divides the load and the effort in equal parts, better maneuverability in spaces reduced (but add the bow and stern thruster to a single engine and the problem is solved) Put 1800 rpm on a single engine, it will run at 6 knots will burn 3-4 GPH, Put 1800 rpm on a twins engines, it will run at 10- 11 kN but it will burn more than 12 GPH, with the same amount of fuel with one it will do 3000 NM and with the other 1500 or less, with one you have more power to gain thrust in less time and escape a storm, with another you will have to adjust your course and cross it, with one you have power redundancy and with the other not, but if you load poor quality fuel you will have the same serious problem with a single or a twin ... "the ship does not make the captain"

    Dennis loves the Nordhavn 76. So do I. My personal pick would be the Nordhavn 76 L’ Adagio. It was sold this past year out of Malta. Wish it could have been mine. Love everything about that boat. Maybe someday.

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve - the Nordhavn 76 is a great design and as Dennis said, more like a ship. Very good through the water offshore, lots of room and exceedingly capable. And, PAE has built a couple dozen of them so when it is your time you can buy new or find a good used one. I sold a boat once that was named "Someday Came" - so maybe someday is real!

    It depends on whether you go offshore often. A boat like the Nordhaven design has a higher center of gravity than one built lower. That gives you more room if your boat is mainly used as a gin palace at the marina, but offshore, they roll like bitches.

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technik - the full displacement designs have a rounder hull/bilge which makes for more interior volume and a smoother ride through the seas, but is responsible for more rolling, especially when at anchor. This is why most of them have active fin stabilizers or paravane systems. Thanks for watching.

    I hope one day Nordhavn will also come up with the hybrid version too; with solar panels to help conserve energy on fuel. The hybrid version would be much less pinching in the pocket. 🤔😊

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dave. PAE/Nordhavn does have some experience with Diesel Electric and it did not work out as well as was hoped. I don't think Kadey-Krogen has gone down that path. Obviously the technology is there, but to get the right package with the necessary installation requirements and costs in line is no easy feat.

    • @RogerWilco1
      @RogerWilco1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JMYS - Trawler Specialists I would be really fascinated to hear about that experience. In their being able to put weight where you want it and have a perfectly horizontal shaft should theoretically be better... but in practice things are always different- and knowing those differences is valuable.

    • @davebunn1448
      @davebunn1448 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RogerWilco1 - I believes horizontal shaft gives better speed than the vertical ones as it pushes the object horizontally. As for the vertical shaft, some rpm speed is used to push the water upwards but not backward. Thus vertical shaft is losing some plane speed. (Just my guess from layman point of view. Correct me if I'm wrong).

    • @RogerWilco1
      @RogerWilco1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Bunn Yes, a perfectly horizontal shaft is more efficient, as the energy used pushing doen doesn’t help, except maybe in planing situations, but we aren’t going st planing speeds.... and planing isn’t more efficient anyway, it’s just more efficient than you would be at that speed if you weren’t planing.

    I love these conversations. The reason is you find out the psychology of owners.....one engine is OK....yea right. C'mon people, you know when taking on the worlds oceans' you need REDUNDANCY. One of those redundant features is SPEED. You need the option to run for cover when the weather goes pear shaped. Top speed 9kns....up yours Nordhavn. Never mind a 'get you home' engine, i want REAL redundancy like 2x800hp motors. Nordhavn owners, you just hug the shoreline, others with sense, you take the direct route. Can you imagine doing 64miles in 8hrs, perleese, Nordhavn owners do. You are 8 miles from shore and it takes you 1hr to get there, 8 MILES!!!. The Staten Island ferry is quicker. For advice on boating, i am afraid i would give Mr Fox a very wide berth.

    • @JeffMerrillYachts
      @JeffMerrillYachts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Robert: Thanks for watching and sharing your views. Dennis Fox is someone I would be proud to go to sea with, he understands more about trawlers and traveling offshore than can possibly be shared in a short interview. One of the wonders of boating is that there are different models for different needs. If you are going to cross oceans you need to know what you are doing - range must be known, speed and fuel burn calculated and slower travel uses less fuel - most of this is common sense. Fast boats burn a lot more fuel and don't have the range. I love the slow pace, long range travel and arriving with fuel in reserve, it all depends upon what you want to do and it's important to have the right tool for the job.

    • @robertstancer4469
      @robertstancer4469 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      .....' Dennis Fox is someone I would be proud to go to sea with'.....A little tip for you; DO NOT put your faith in humans, put it in the boat spec. You do not. i repeat, do not put your faith in 1 engine and an elastic band called a 'get you home engine' when crossing OCEANS. Yes 3000mile OCEANS. Whoever is replying to my posts' can you tell me any commercial boat that crosses OCEANS with 1 engine at 8kns?.... Perleese. I'm afraid i now take what you say as absolute rubbish, you're just being an old romantic. To Your mate Dennis, you were lucky.

      @@robertstancer4469 As an ex-Airline Captain turned Criminal Defense Attorney I am all about redundancy and an exit strategy. I agree with both you and JMYS. I wouldn't dream of buying a trawler with one engine. At the same time, I like the certainty when it comes to fuel burn calculations/range etc. I come from a world where you can't just pull over and get more fuel, or call for AAA when an engine packs it in....... Good points both of you.
