Million dollar guitar gear anyfool sounds good,
Jeezus Mary......! You just did a five-star documentary on how Tim Pierce prepares for and performs for a world class gig like the Grammys. And, you peppered him with just the right questions that all of us were thinking about and would have asked. Do you ever _stop_ ! LOL ! Well done! 👏🙏
Musicians eberywhere: I do Riffs all the time!
Thanks Mary and thanks Tim (loved the Beato interview about the vanishing middle class too ( used to have a montage print of wolf head sketches called “The Vanishing Wolf” where the sketches fade into the background and the yellow eyes are the part that's coloured in) but as the wolf is making a comeback- hopefully the Mexican wolf too (there is only one!!! )- so shall the middle class and all the other people that were part of the music industry.)
By virtue of Rick’s video and one simple statement of Tims from the very beginning of your interview Mary, I have had a bit of an epiphany about practising and also begin to understand the importance of collaboration. I’ve been sitting at my piano pretending for years and once in a while I get something I like happening but I was often in a trance playing passively- slowly mostly pushing myself to see possible harmonies and how far I could go. I hope to say Little did I know, I was a ghost to myself until I discovered the idea of riffing all the time It might bring a more specific focus to the task of understanding harmony and finding my wings. I've been a perpetual wanderer through accidental harmony and find myself either doing repeated chords like in dime store ballads singing in the style of Paul McCartney - always on the look out for catchy lines (-I love singing- ) or I’ll play musical hinges one after the other (dramatic ones) and spaghetti Italian opera melodies made up on the spot. I think I'm going to do an additional thing from now on where I pick a key and practise riffs AND write them down so I can be a R E A D E R. .
Sail on Mary! I am looking forward to watching yet another of your intriguing videos but actually I am going to run this pay dirt through the sluice a few times so I won't miss anything. Awesome!
P.S. Thinking out loud... The fear of making a mistake lay hidden under the habit of sitting down to escape the world by pretending (it's actually kind of an act of diplomacy.) ...and being limited by constantly being on the search for something new and never stopping much to analyse. However, now I have mindful, energetic, purposeful riffing! What more could a person ask for?
It's best having someone across a subject, asking the questions..(otherwise you get the "fans want to know your favourite colour" teen-zine drivel.
@@clickbaitcharlie2329........👍
Good video, about one of my favourite guitar players!
Thanks for posting this ! This video is good docu about this fantastic guitar player.
Well done!
Tim is just the best
You're no slouch either, Rhett. Love your video as well. Best wishes for your continued success and sharing.
Talent is definitely in the eye of the beholder but Guthrie Govan is very obviously "the best."
@@fishguru73 Agreed!! Guthrie is beyond being a monster player. One could say that he is "other-worldly". Another fine player that has been around a long time is Lee Ritenour. See my comment elsewhere about his reading skills. 😉
Man! 3 people I would have a beer with: Mary Spender, Rick Beato and Tim Pierce!!
On top of all the skills, Tim is an amazing person to share what 99% of us will never experience. Thanks, Mary.
I watch Tim's videos 50% for the music content and 50% for reminders of feeling good in life. The guy always has a huge smile on his face playing his guitars. It's easy to forget to just enjoy the music sometimes.
Less than ten minutes in and I am like, "I should be taking notes" this is awesome! It's like take a kid to work day. ❤
I did exactly that! stopped and took notes. It was a class!
For the record: Tim Pierce _is_ my favourite guitarist and generous with his time and teaching on the web.
When Tim plays, the joy that is on his face is the joy that I feel watching him & listening to him. He's just so great and entertaining! Pure joy! A treasure!!!
Tim Pierce has been doing this forever, he has played with everyone, he knows all the technical jargon. Still, when he describes something, he uses simple words, simple analogies that everyone understands, including non musicians. He's up there with all the superstars but he seems to be a very humble guy who would take time to talk with everyone. I really like this man!!
His smile and his willingness to share or explain make it easy for me to feel comfortable and welcome.
Good for you.
Tim is a monster player with serious chops, and still seems to be the kind of guy you could hang with when you’re not playing music. Those players are few and far between. Love his vocabulary and positivity.
I've seen a previous episode of Tim's cast that followed him through an awards show week. That level of, not "talent", but "professionalism" is something we all should aspire to. I love episodes like this. Thanks for the documentary, Mary.
Great video. What I love about Tim is that he is always genuinely enjoying music. You can tell that he's still that kid who picked up a guitar for the first time and was enthralled!
I was just going to watch a couple of minutes of this video now but suddenly I am still here at its end. You and Tim covered a lot in only 30 minutes. He genuinely likes talking with you and the video benefits from this rapport. Tim is an easy guy to respect. (and you too)
Tim is the pro's pro. It's so cool you got to hang with him. I am jelly but that is over ridden by my happiness for you.
My favorite tim pierce interview
It’s mind-blowing to think that Tim’s cover band Traveller played about 7-8 of our church dances in Albuquerque in the 1975-1977 timeframe. He was already the best lead guitarist in town.
That's amazing. The man has been killing it for 50 years.
I was in an up-and-coming Albuquerque band when Tim and Traveler were hitting their stride. (As an example. we were the second band up at a five band outdoor concert at Speedway Park...Traveler was the headliner.) We still have a lot of mutual friends, but were only acquaintances back then. He and his buddy Bobby Unser Jr. dropped by one of my band's rehearsals on night and Tim sat in with us on a Steely Dan song. Hearing Tim and our other guitarist nail the solos on Kid Charlemagne in unison is still one of the best moments in my musical career.
@@bripslag It’s more than possible that _your_ band played some of our church dances, too! Name?
Being the king of New Mexico in the 70s won't get you very far. That's why he moved away
@@doormasterjohn Absolutely, but what followed wouldn’t have been possible without playing in a kick-ass local bar band first as a teenager. And I got to dance to their music back in the day.
For me, Tim is the ultimate servant of the song. Even when he’s shredding, there is always a brilliant musical intent behind it. The songs he played on are better songs because he played on them. Legend.
Tim’s the best. Seems like he’d be a great guy to hang with, and he always looks like he’s having the best day of his life.
They play Mr. Bungle at the Grammys. That’s completely unexpected and it makes me so happy!
I had to scroll all the way down to find this... knew I wouldn't be the only person who would be irrationally excited to see it. I'm not even a fan exactly, I just appreciate the diversity and originality being rewarded
Damn that was fun ! Tim is of course amazing because he's so capable and always musical. Mary I bet you learned more than a little that will help you.
What I love about watching Tim Pierce is how much he enjoys his gear and just playing guitar in general, his smile is infectious.
We are so grateful when you put out longer format videos on TH-cam Mary.
Tim is a legend! He is so down to earth and humble for one so accomplished - and what a talent! I love that he shares his knowledge and is trying to nurture the next generation of guitarists. He has some sound knowledge and understanding of the music industry, technology but doesn’t lose any of the creativity, which goes back to your video about being many things beyond being just a performer. The more I look, the more I believe those who are just creative and just play are actually in the minority. So many musicians these days are multi-talented or perhaps multi-disciplined is the better word because it’s not just about creativity. Thanks for another great video! 😃👍
He always looks so happy when he is playing and is a wizard of the fret board ❤
Fantasic Mary you got to meet him! He is a legend in my life and an Australian gave him a great break! The bloke that was a hero of mine! Rick Springfield! 👍💯🙏
I love Tim's channel. He's so nice and humble not to mention one of the greatest players on the planet.
Tim seems like such a good guy. He's so willing to share his incredible amount of experience and knowledge!
Love how he always plays with a smile on his face!
First heard Tim at Norm's rare guitars, he is a treasure, and so down to earth.
Yeah, Tim is great!
Such a nice guy, always helpful, yet humble.
He seems like a good friend to me....
even though we haven't met!
We're about the same age, similar temperament, and I am confident that if we ever did meet, we would be good friends.
Thanks for doing this, Mary!
I always enjoy watching Tim talk about the "practical stuff."
I love watching Tim’s videos. He’s sitting there playing big smile on his face. You can tell he really enjoy what he does. His playing is so tasty and he makes it look so easy.
This was amazing. Tim Pierce is pure genius. What a gift to the guitar. A true master.
I am fascinated by how organised Tim is, amazing
Love his videos---he seems like the happiest man on TH-cam!
Tim really is a great player but as well as his playing his knowledge on gear and tone is unbelievable. He seems like a really nice approachable guy.
Guitar Hero....so helpful and in formative. Got so turned on by it. Inspired me to get a new guitar. 💛💚
Tim looks like a bloke in a pub having a quiet Guinness in the corner. Unassuming, but, oh man, what a provenance he has. Very enjoyable to watch this, Mary. 🦓🦓🦓
You two ought to do more together regularly. That was great with two of my favorites.
What Tim said about the Leslie speed from Hammond players is so right on. It's not the Fast On /Slow Off, but the ramp up and ramp down that blends the effects together.
Best of the best. So damn cool of you to showcase our friend Tim. Right on Mary!
Man, that Heritage Les Paul he has in the beginning of the video is gorgeous. Thank you for supporting the guitar builders in Kalamazoo, MI!!!
Wow! In my band days doing the Tastee Concerts in Jamaica I used to complain about 27-30 songs with one rehearsal. The worst ones were the original songs that some contestants insist on singing. I would scribble the opening notes sometimes to remember how they start. It would work, most of the times and when it doesn’t, just keep going 😊
it's just amazing how many times i stopped and wrote notes about what Tim Pierce does. This is an amazingly informative interview. well done Mary Spencer!
What a fabulous interview! Clearly Tim loves what he does even the pressure of it. What we learn from this though is that he puts in the hard work before hand to make it work. Intelligent, articulate, talented but comes across as a really humble guy.
As an old rock and roller, Tim Pierce is my hero. Nobody better.
that Heritage single cut is absolutely gorgeous!
Tim, you are so damn good! I been following you since 2017 and I can’t believe 6our talent. You can play anything. Keep up the incredible playing.
Great things do come out of New Mexico!
Holy crap! I am trying to learn and memorize 3 songs. Tim is not only a guitar hero, he is a genius.
What an amazing humble cool guy, so impressed by him, thank you for highlighting this.
This is probably one of my favorite TH-cam videos ever! Thank you for doing this! Incredible!
Tim Pierce is the guitar hero that I didn't realize was so iconic throughout my childhood... originally only knowing him as the guitarist of the amazing Runaway solo on the first Bon Jovi album. He was the first page I started following once I came to TH-cam. Complete Legend. ☮❤🎶
I think these "unsung heros" are now well known thanks to internet/you tube. I did not even know Jimmy Page and Steve Luckather were studio guitarists and had never heard of f.i. Tim Pierce or Larry Carlton. I was a fan of Jean Luc Ponty and Holdsworth in the 80's. I had one tape (enigmatic ocean) a friend copied from an album for me. He had bought the record abroad. My local music shop did not even know the names. I looked for years for an album of Luther Johnson recorded in the 70's in Paris. Found it in Paris in the early 90's. Now I can listen to everything they ever recorded on you-tube or spotify. I wish we had internet back then in the 70's-80's.
Tim transformed my playing. He became my guitar hero when I first heard Toy Matinee.
Ditto The Ballad of Jenny Ledge. Great Outro ala Holdsy.
Don't take this the wrong way Tim, but I love when you fuck up. It gives this mortal hope.
This guy is just soo good....talented, competent, accomplished, diverse. I've always thought session musicians are the work horses of the music industry...they are where the work gets done; the music completed. Lived with one and the competence of these men and women is surreal. It does not osmose unfortunately. Great interview M.S.... because you just let him talk..which is why you are so good as an interviewer..you let your guests carry the conversation.
I feel like I found you through Tims channel, who I found through Rick Beato.
Tim is one of my inspirations in my journey of learning to play guitar.
Tim is extraordinary, not only because of his extremely eloquent guitar skills, but his ability to explain his skills in such a relaxed manner without being pretentious. Far too many TH-cam guitarists are extremely pretentious - one guy drives me nuts. The only reason he has so many subscribers is because of all the guests he interviews; nobody would watch otherwise. Tim also has an amazing smile.
There is one guitarist who is probably more versatile than Tim because his brain is off the charts - Guthrie Govan. Here are a few quotes from people on Guthrie - "Guthrie has sheer mastery of almost every guitar technique, and a fantastic grasp of the English language. He is a brilliant instructor and is truly modest." - "I can't think of anyone who has such a grasp on various guitar styles." - "Ridiculously versatile, " - "Technique is beyond earth"
For the record, Mary, I appreciate your videos.
I could listen to Tim Pierce play all day... but I could also listen to him talk all day too. He is an inspiration both musically but also a master in humility and sharing his knowledge!! A priceless individual. We are blessed to listen and also blessed that you took the time and energy to create a fantastic interview/duscussion. Thanks Mary.
Here's to Tim. Amazing player with one of the most extensive resumes in the business. He made Bon Jovi and the Goo Goo Dolls stars. And from my home of many years, Albuquerque, NM.
Thanks. Mary.
What a great guy Tim is
I never heard of the man, thanks for the introduction. awesome interview
Brilliant!!! A gift to the guitar world of Planet Earth!!! Thank you so so so much!
2 of my faves! This is great! This is also great because it shows us just how hard Tim works at his craft and why he is in so much demand. He deserves it.
Tim is so humble and unassuming. Love his channel, very informative.
Great video! This is to a T what a music theatre pit guitarist does as well. It's a very rewarding and addicting line of work!
This video is dear to my heart because of Tim Pierce; One of America's mostly heard musician('s)... and Mary Spender's experience with both playing out and in the studio had given the interview more depth... Thanks Mary for a job well done! This is an Historical Event Musically! Well done! Professionally executed!
🎤😏
Vegas show books cover a complicated long event, similar to the Grammy show, and are like giant potentially chaotic start and stop, weird things happen like keys spontaneously change or singers don’t come in/ come in early/ whatever can happen eventually will, all that, as well! In all the best senses of the word, this guy is a Side Man. A professional. It is so good, the tradition of the wrecking crew and all the Vegas, road, and studio musicians. Plus, originally I’m from New Mexico, older than him but ok. Very special person! Thanks for doing the interview, great job with that as well. (There is a really good Beato interview with him recently as well. )
Jesus, Mary and Joseph ( your new band ). Every sentence that comes from his mouth is saturated in knowledge . Mind blowing. 😊👍💖 Reliable, practical and curb your enthusiasm with reality. Seemed to be the theme behind Tim' s thinking here. He's having to cover pretty much every style of music in the one gig. It's the ultimate challenge for the world's most versatile guitar musician. Eighty songs memorized omg. Different level, on so many levels. Wow. 🤦♂️
Great video Mary
I heard of Tim 20 years ago.
He is a workhorse of a musician.
Super nice guy
Hell of a guitarist as well
I'm so old that I first noticed Tim's name on Rick Springfield's album "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" in 1982. Tim/Time flies...
Re: Playing pub gigs: If that can help you prepare for your tour, here's a suggestion. In the seventies, I worked in a small club north of San Francisco. The club happened to be closed on Wednesdays. Van Morrison, who was living in San Francisco at the time. liked playing small clubs, so on several Wednesday mornings he'd call Greg, the owner, and say "I'm coming up!" Greg would call two people and have a full room that evening for Van's gig. Perhaps a similar approach could work for you.
For someone who owns Vigier guitars, it's a pity you doon't seem to know about the late Shawn Lane... I strongly enjoin you to discover the Mike Shrieve (Santana's drummer in Woodstock) album "Two Doors" with Shawn Lane and Jonas Helborg...
Tim always delivers and certainly never disappoints. Legend.
Awesome interview!
Awesome interview. Thank you Mary!
Wonderful stuff Mary. Love your work, Kere.
What an extraordinary musician and such a nice humble man. A combination not always found in the music / entertainment business! Great interview Mary You rock girl!
Loved it!
Great interview Mary. Thanks
Great video. Loved the tip about "just keep playing, even if you make a mistake". We beginners tend to freeze, come back or whatever to fix the mistakes... 😛
Absolutely loved that, thanks Mary
Legendary guitar player and great dude. Everyone has heard and enjoyed Tim's playing 😎
Brilliant work. Wonderfully done.
Mary, great interview!
Well done Mary Spender!
Tim is such a lovely, humble, talented humanoid.
As are you.
Tim is the only reason I'll be watching the Grammys.
Great video, thanks Mary & Tim.
Great content!! Very insightful stuff.
Mary is the best.
Love you! Great piece.
Rock-on!
Thanks Mary, excellent interview of an amazing guitarist. Love your work.
Great interview and amazing playing. Very impressive.
Excellent Job!
Full of great inspiration, guidance, wisdom, insight, etc...
Tim is so talented and humble. He worked hard to get where he is today. I know a few musicians with nearly no talent that are egomaniacs. I actually stepped away for a number of years from playing with anyone. I am now back at it but great people to hang with. I will never be with any egomaniacs again. Thanks be to Mary for this segment.
Very informative. Thanks, Mary!
Lovely Mary, thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed this!
Fascinating video, thanks Mary!
This is amazing. I learned so much. Big Thanks.
Master Class.
Well done, Mary. Excellent conversation. I learned so much.
