Keep searching and listening to beautiful singing - you're right - this is beautiful singing. And, the business of opera has changed so much that it's hard to find good moments.
I don't know much about what's current in opera, only that this brings tears to my eyes. I can't imagine it being bettered. And yes, I will keep looking for similar moments of perfection xx
Welcome to the club! Opera is such a thrilling genre. It's hard to believe that this performance is nearly 50 years old. In current productions Nero is sung by a countertenor not a tenor and the orchestration will be more in keeping with the period (late Renaissance/early Baroque) Cheers!
Isn't this just the most wonderful interpretation ever? Two of the finest ever singers and one of the most beautiful arias. Shame we will never hear anything this sublime again. Madame Troyanos died far too young, but Maestro Tappy still with us at 87.
Saw this live as a neophyte opera fan. I will never, ever forget this production and most especially Ms. Troyanos whose combined vocal and physical presence created one of my most cherished opera experiences ever. Truly magical, utterly unforgettable. Would that she had not left us so soon . . . she will remain forever in my heart.
Oh yes, I was there too. Every one of those 5 very memorable performances, now almost half a century ago. Troyanos also sang an unforgettable Adalgisa that same debut season in San Francisco. How she is missed! I get tears every time I revisit this clip, thank you so much. Of course the tears are for the singing and the music, and not the protagonists. Didn't Nero kicked Poppea to death while pregnant? That happened after this most beautiful duet. And let's stop all this nonsense of Nero being sung by a soprano. Does anybody actually think the music is better served, honestly are you more moved?
V. beautiful, indeed. It appears Eric Tappy was THE Nero. Never heard Troyanos as Poppea, but her singing is impressive (my favourite interpreter of the role remains Rachel Yakar). Thank you for this. I wonder if this performance was recorded in its entirety, pirated, if you will, or by the radio, altho' the Europeans are much better at conserving (& broadcasting) operas Live than the US, in general). Sublime.
As someone just recently coming to appreciate opera, it is wonderful to hear this in 2024. Such beautiful singing.

Wow...always hear that tear in Ms Troyanos' voice. Beautiful...
So sad she left us too soon, like Arleen Auger and Lucia Popp the same year. Thank you for this sublime duo with Eric Tappy, THE Nerone of his time.
