Stomach issues are the literal worst, it's so easy to give up if your stomach just doesn't want to work with you. Fantastic display of willpower though, great editing as always. Congrats on the 100k!
I'm eternally thankful that I have the digestive system of a goat. I can eat the weirdest and the spiciest foods without much issue, I can go on pretty much any boat or on any ride without throwing up, and my doctor said I was one of the only patients he's had that actually managed to gain weight during chemo.
If you look up a pace calculator, 100K over 17 hours is roughly 16 and a half minutes a mile. Thats like a really really fast walk, or a super super slow run. When i was a beginner at 12 years old I was running a 15 minute over the course of one mile (cause obv a beginner usually can barely run more than a mile at a time.) The pace he was going at was actually incredibly impressive given the distance he ran, but there were rest stations and im sure he trained for an incredibly long time. I don't think it would be too unbearable if you invest a lot of time and effort into the sport.
@@pollux_id2557 16 minutes per mile isn't a really really fast walk, I'd say it's more of a "walking with a purpose" kind of deal, but obviously he's going up hills and such so it's a little different

I remember my first 100k, granted it was only 10 months ago. I finished in 16h 14min, I ate so much brisket, pancakes, bacon, candy, fruits, PB and J sandwiches, etc. that I think I ended the day with a calorie surplus. My course wasn't quite so hilly as this one, but I'm still proud to have finished it at 17 years old.
I was one of the runners this year in Yllä-Pallas nuts 100k ultra as well this year, I finished at around 14 hours. I can only imagine how tough it was to fight through those stomach issues and it shows how strong you are as well. As someone who overcame obesity 3.5 years ago and becoming a tough ultra runner It truly is as you said yourself venturing a journey into oneself and exploring that.
Love this! You motivated me to complete my first 22K trail run (1100m elevation) and you have now motivated me to train for a longer race and learn more about my limits. Thank you man!

Because of studies, I can't really focus on training but I can guarantee you that in 2-3 years maybe I'll do my best to follow your path. Good luck for your next projects and what you dream about, thank you for being amazing, thank you for giving me that urge to live the unlazy way ! P.S. Great job, these types of events are great because you really have to dig deep physically and mentally to finish. I agree with you about how you can look back on it and remember that you were and are capable of pushing through.
The key to winning the marathon is to use your diarrhea defensively: unleash it in the path of your opponents to slow or block their progress, or with the right diet you can use it as an oil slick.
I did my first 50km run a few weeks back. I’ve since suffered a stress fracture but I’ve signed up for a fell ultra next autumn. I’m hoping to do the 100km in two years.
Congratulations on the 100k! I've only managed to run 49km in a 24 hour period of time. Unfortunately I have stomach issues when running long distance as well. Huge respect and very inspiration!
We can learn so much about ourselves and our capabilities through physical and mental hardship. I've been dealing with a rather unknown disease which has really pushed me to my mental limits. It has been though but the things you learn from it are invaluable. Now that I'm almost cured, I am really hungry for an ultra marathon. Your story only motivates me more so I want to thank you for that 😄 Stay hungry ✌️
@@aymankhalissi7006 I don't disagree at that. But the thing is, someone who can barely finish a marathon running won't have any mental strength aside the physical one to continue no matter what. The pain he will feel is so strong that won't allow him continue for more. The same person if he tries a 100 km route at a much lower pace and with walking intervals probably suffer less.He will be in pain probably in legs and tired, but not that insufferable feeling in your lungs, the taste of blood in his mouth, the pain in his teeth due to increased levels of blood pressure and constant hearing of his heart pulse

The mantra I use when I start to suffer is: how well can I move right now? Do not think of how far you have run. Banish any thought of how far you have left to go. Pay attention to how things feel only to take care of the needed maintenance. And keep moving. Celebrate movement, anything that tastes good, and the kind and generous people who are helping you do this crazy thing :)
I already have so much respect for people who do a half marathon! So my respect to you! I am a big couch potato, i can't even run for 1 kilometer straight, you've given me motivation to better myself. One day I hope I'll be able to achieve this too.
I know I'm a year late but for anyone else wanting to take up running, don't hope to run 100km. That's utterly bonkers, unnecessary and simply not a realistic goal. Aim to run 2km. If it's something you wish to work on get out 3 times a week and walk/run. Find a good app to track your times and stick to a schedule that you can keep. Given time and consistency your body WILL surprise you. Keep it up, work it into your life and see if you can get to 5km using the same basic methods. At first with breaks and eventually with no breaks. Time doesn't matter so much. So long as you are jogging and not walking. That's as far as I would plan for a beginner. The real goal is to build a healthy habit into your life. This is how it's done. With habit and bitesize chunks.
This was great! An honest (and humorous) look a this strange sport we call ultra running. Best take away of all, find you a train in a race and be their caboose as long as you can!
