Nice tutorial for someone who wants to do a swap so they can 4 wheel. For the typical highway cruiser, however, simply replacing the viscous coupler would fix the issue. That can be done with the TC still in place. The NP 249 TC is a very good unit, in general. But the NV 249 (mid '96-'98 models) is a bit better.
Want to make my two wheel into a four wheel, do you think the 242 will work with my Jeep a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 I think I need some kind of rear transmission adapter befor I can install the transfer case
Thank You for the great content. QUESTION. Can I flat tow behind my motorhome ( 4 wheels on ground) a 96 ZJ with the 249 transfer case? I tested by putting transfer case in neutral and transmission in park and zj moves freely forward and reverse as I push it. Ssme thing happens if transfer case is in neutral and transmission in neutral, I wonder what's safer. Please someone with experience on this reply. I have a trip coming soon and need to know. For my towing points I'm good. Jeep has a heavy duty winch mount with d rings and it's sandwiched over the unibody frame.. (1996 5.2 V8 with full time 4wd 249 transfer case, automatic transmission)

Thank you. I appreciate the feedback. I had entertained replacing the VC, but i wanted the part time, and 2wd functions of the 242.
I HAVE A ZJ 98 V8 5.2L 4X2, CAN THE 242 TRANSFER BE PLACED DIRECTLY TO THE TRANSMISSION CASE WITHOUT MODIFICATIONS TO THE CASE?

When you bought the 242 you didn’t end up swapping any of the old 249 shafts into the new case ?
Exactly that's what I want to know how he didn't swap over the output shaft/ planetaries
Nice job. Did you upgrade to the Bilstein 5100's and OME coils?
When doing this swap do you have to replace the whole shift box or did you just replace it
Subbed, bout to attempt all that crap.. thanks
Great video but the music. Holy crap. The video was better on mute…. Adult auto porn with tech music
I agree the music is very annoying.

Did your 2WD fuel mileage increase when on the road?
From what my experience is, its about 1mpg increase on my 1998 5.9 zj.
