    They don’t use drums in the original but it did add an unexpected flare to the performance for the host of this venue-they have sung with orchestra’s in a similar manner where they start off all Acappella, then the instruments come in-Kevin, beat boxer, is a cellist and also plays 2 or 3 other instruments, Scott too plays piano, so they enjoy adding drums, piano (thank you) and the cello at time for an added flair! It’s beautiful.
    They were invited to sing w/ a very popular orchestra a few years ago, and they traded singing some just themselves and others w/the orchestra, it was awesome and they had a blast!
    I have seen them live! It’s amazing, they sounded amazing-the show was epic and impressive! They never stop singing or moving-they truly work hard on their craft!

    Saw them live, it was epic. Christmas show 2018. Bohemian Rhapsody was the encore. The acapella choir from Scott, Kirstin and Mitch's high school opened for them.
    Bohemian Rhapsody sounded essentially the same live.

    • @steel5791
      @steel5791 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And, although not my personal #1, I think Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the best that they've done, at least until they release something that surpasses even this. Can't wait!

    For your next Pentatonix reaction I would vote for Hallelujah (Official Version) - their most popular video, currently over 600 million views. They also have a TV performance recorded in front of a live audience from one of their Christmas Specials (search TH-cam for Pentatonix Christmas Special). In fact what would be a really amazing reaction video would be those two videos reacted to back-to-back on the same video with comments of the things you notice between them. I actually like the "Live" version better. I also notice someone in the comments below mentions their latest video, 90" Dance Medley" which would be another awesome reaction for you. With Pentatonix they have so many extremely great videos is really hard to select just a few but if you keep reacting to their videos, I'll keep recommending more. Looking forward to your next Pentatonix reaction.

    I have had the incredible good fortune of seeing them live 7 times now and each performance has never failed to leave me breathless. In the last one just a couple months before the pandemic shut everything down they had a really cool drum section with just Kevin and Matt vibing while "the trio" took a brief break. Other than that, no, drums or other instruments aside from Kevin's cello are not a part of their live performances

    I have only one thing to say and it is important. HEADPHONES. Invest in a good set of headphones. You get so much more of the detailed nuances of their music.

  • @debbierhodes4479

    They don't usually have a drum. It was a request from the venue. I saw them live and there were no instructions at all and it sounded awesome.

    They have said that they have click/counters in their in-ears as they got to larger live venues. If you look at their very old, small venue they were able to just use mic and listening to each other...can’t do that now.

    Goosebumps for most of their live show. When the harmonies really fill out or the beat box kicks in... chills.

  • @larrywt656
    @larrywt656 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I believe they only use the earwigs as monitors, only to hear each other. This was a performance for a U.S. TV talk show (Jimmy Kimmel Live) and supposedly Kimmel was the one who asked for the drummers on the song. Most Pentatonix fans were not happy about this. They NEVER use drums in their recordings or most of their live performances, just Kevin's magnificent beatboxing. The drums just got in the way here and were TOTALLY unnecessary. Check out the official video to see how the song really sounds, because that's the way they usually perform it live.

    About their in-ears: they’ve said that they get starting notes and beats and then that they listen to each other. Don’t know if the beat continues throughout the song or not.
    About the drums: I’ve heard that the drummers won some sort of contest for the reward of playing with PTX, but I don’t know if that came from PTX or the venue.
    I attended a PTX Christmas concert back in 2018. It was so good. They’re all true performers and they love interacting with the crowd, so their live performances are sometimes better than the studio recordings. 🤯 Yes, really.

    • @larrywt656
      @larrywt656 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drums were a Jimmy Kimmel thing. I don't think the group really wanted them there, but went along with it because they are all really nice people and didn't want to upset anyone. I personally found the drums distracting and unnecessary.

  • @pumpkinonwheels4238

    I got to see them live during their very first tour and it was PHENOMENAL. I honestly cannot express how much more impactful it is to hear them in person. Back then, it was a pretty small venue compared to the places they play nowadays, and the somewhat confined space really added so much to the experience. I'm really curious how it feels seeing them in a proper stadium! Hoping to be able to go again once concert's are safe again. But yes, highly HIGHLY recommend seeing them if you ever get the chance.

  • @PMJonte
    @PMJonte 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I don't think they use a click track live. The only reason I say that is because in interviews they have stated that their song writing and performance processes aren't as hard as most people might think - they know each other so well. My guess is the only thing they have piped in are their bandmates.
    Btw...live they are just as amazing.

    Unlike most musicians, PTX works sort-of like this is a regular job. They get together daily in the morning and work until the evening. Bohemian Rhapsody, the song and video, took them about 3 months to get right. They have said it is the most difficult thing they have done.
    And you are spot-on about details. In Bohemian Rhapsody, near the end of the song, they 'tilt' the camera up to show a dark sky with stars in it. It is an homage to Queen guitarist, who also is a Ph.D. in Astrophysics.

    You might be interested in PTX's cover of Blinding Lights. This was recorded and released during covid, so I doubt there is a live version yet. But it's a great cover!

  • @lornehulett55

    Don't know if anyone else thought of this, but maybe they had the drums come out because Kevin had a hand held mike and could not use his hands as well for some of the drum beats he would normally do.

    Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Pentaholics. There is so much for you to catch up on. My favourites are Hallelujah, Daft Punk (GRAMMY winner), Amazing Grace, Mary did you know, Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine (both recorded and live) the recorded version has a visual message.
    Do they need click?? Check out th-cam.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/w-d-xo.html where they sing WITHOUT MIC's/IEM's just huddled round.... including skip backs/stutters - LIVE.

    @joebarnhart4460 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I think they have a click track during live performances. Don't leave anything to chance if you don't have to! The drums were added by the show producers, they are not on the studio recording. If you want to see REAL magic chords, you should listen to their original recording, "Run to You" performed live. It is a slow, haunting melody and I swear they never use the same chord twice in the whole piece! th-cam.com/video/gVNamBJUdfU/w-d-xo.html

    Nina, I'm probaly going to be beheaded by PTX fans after this comment, but this version doesn't give me anything at all. It's "pretty", but there's no emotions, feel or soul to it at all. For me this is just five people showing off how good they are. And even using clicks! Come on... I advise you to do a reaction to Disturbeds live version of the same song from Conan O'Brien Tonight Show. Or even the version with Myles Kennedy.

  • @nancykuhrt6689

    I prefer listening to them without the added drum. I feel it distracts from them and somewhat overrides Kevin's beatboxing. I appreciate your reactions, but, please pause the video. I can't hear them singing while you are talking, nor can you. Then, when you start again, back it up a few seconds, please. Just a suggestion. Thank you.

    The Official video version is ten+ times better. As a fan of acapella music, the addition of the drums was somewhere between an insult, a travesty and was probably the hare-brained idea of a TV producer who doesn't understand or appreciate acapella music. I'm surprised Pentatonix didn't object or say no way.
