I’d love to hear about the 35mm and the 85mm. I’ve discovered that, weirdly, those are the two focal lengths I tend to use the most when using my zoom lens
Yes, we need more budget friendly lens option in the L mount system. Now there are quite a few options in the wide and normal focal length but not any in the AF telephoto or travel friendly long zoom range lenses. Something like Tamron 28-200 would be interesting for travels with such size and big aperture in at it's price for other mounts unlike what Lumix is offering at exorbitant price for the such a small aperture.
It'll be interesting to see if manufacturers like Tamron ever enter the L-Mount space. Now we have Samyang making L-Mount zooms (like the 35-150), I wonder if they could be the ones to introduce more affordable zooms with a long range... interesting! Thanks for watching anyways, I appreciate it :)
@@harryvlogs7833 not really, the L mount needs more lenses closer to the £100 mark then towards £1000, this is the only lens that biases towards the £100 mark for the L mount, theres a reason why Sony cameras especially still the ZV E10 is utterly destroying every camera in existence. You can bet a lot of money the ZV E10 by it self has outsold every L mount and Z mount camera combined.
Finally, this is amazing, thanks for showing it, can’t wait to see more of this third parties companies coming to the L mount, and understanding how amazing this cameras are
You just made my day! Thank you for saying that, I really appreciate it. I've always been a fast talker and that was only accelerated from the nerves of recording myself, and it's taken a lot of practice to slow my delivery down. Glad to hear it's working! Have a great day :)
I believe Meike is pronounced May Key. I'm interested in their 85mm f/1.4 but I'm not sure about the lack of weather-sealing. Brightin Star seems to have a few interesting lenses, but lack of electronic connections is concerning.
My feeling is a second hand Lumix 50mm f1.8 would be a better option, as they're a very similar price, but you get a smaller, lighter lens with a better minimum focussing distance. That being said I'm really excited for the other Meike AF lenses in this range, as there isnt a much competition at the price there offering then for, think it's really good for L mount.
Nice review Josh. It's nice to see the L-Mount landscape growing beyond the first party manufacturer. Btw I think Meike is pronounced "Me-ee-keh" or "Meh-ee-keh" without the pause where I've hyphenated 😊
That’s impressive for the price. Does the Meike lens have the linear focus feature like the LUMIX lenses? For shooting video with a follow focus device, this has become a must-have feature for me. Focus by wire is just too annoying for follow focusing.
Great little lens. I did notice a problem when shooting video in 1080p on the S5 at 25p. Camera wouldn't stop adjusting focus even with AF turned of on both camera and lens, the recording would then stop after a minute. This issue only exists in 1080p, not 4k. Issue also doesn't exist at 1080p 25fps on the S5iiX. Probably fixable with a firmware update.
There are differences, but both look nice. I notice some colour differences such as the marble or stone on the 2nd picture. Image B has is slightly softer in some areas. But I'd be happy with either lens.
@@JoshCameron Worth a look at the 35mm! I'm not sold on the AF ability but the quality does seems pretty good, at least on the 50mm. If it holds up across the range, thats awesome. I'm afraid 1.4 is too much lens for me
Yeah 100%! I think the 85mm F1.4 from Meike looks great as well, although I haven't tested that one yet. As long as more manufacturers are developing L-Mount lenses in a variety of price points then everyone's happy :)
Thanks for the review, Josh. Glad to see Meike throw their hat in the L Mount ring. Hoping Samyang produces more lenses for L-mount soon. Also, when are you going to review the Pyxis you took a shot of? (Or was that just a heavily rigged up Lumix camera???)
Thanks for watching! Yeah I agree, I hope more brands start developing a L-Mount lineup - the competition can only benefit us consumers :) That camera in the video with just a heavily rigged up Lumix, but I am currently in talks with Black Magic about getting the Pyxis for a while to review. It's a slow process, but hopefully there will be some content on that camera in the near future :)
Meike is actually pronounced "Me Key" according to their sales rep in Canada. I was saying Mikey as well and then I heard them say it. But I yea these asian companies need to add phonetic spellings in their english documentation of the company names sometimes LOL!!!
I actually got paid $50 to get the Lumix 50mm with my S5iiX 😄 Camera shop took the instant rebate promo off their sale price, not the MSRP. I'll consider the Meike if they can beat that 😄
The photos look great! I think that 99% of people won't see a difference between the 1.8 lenses. The 1.4 might be good for specific situations where extra detail is needed but I think those are pretty rare. Especially if one shoots for SoMe no-one will ever see a difference. It also looks pretty cool, the design is a little futuristic 🙂
@@stevens2279 I didn't look so closely, I only saw that all the photos looked good. One often edits the white balance and/or saturation anyways and if one looks at a photo taken with that lens alone, in a completely different context one wouldn't see that it's taken with a cheaper lens. Only the photographer notices that.
Try to film a Chrome rim from a car or anything with Chrome in it on a bright sunny day ^^ then take your the 50mm F1.4 S Pro Lens, then you see a real World difference :) great Video.
I think it's pronounced 'Make-ah' (definitely Mark Bennett's fault if wrong!), but I think I prefer Meike Wazowski. Also, Samyang need to hurry up and bring their tiny primes to L-mount! But this looks like a great budget option especially for a company that makes AF despite not being in the alliance.
@JoshCameron Please test the 35mm. I received an email from them about it but I'm not going to pull the trigger until someone does a good review on it. The Lumix 35mm is on sale at $597. I'd rather spend less if the Meike is worth it. If not, I will fork over more money for the Lumix.
Good lens. But I think going against the LUMIX 50mm might literally be the worst opponent in that the Panasonic is already a great deal. I wish they went with 35mm first to undercut the price there where Panasonic is a little pricey. I just can’t see a world where someone had a 2k dollar full frame camera and wants to go so cheap on a lens. The swiftness of the Panasonic on AF alone makes it worth the difference and some.
I understand that “for the price” we need to accept breathing focus, some distortions, poor bookeh… etc. I will say not. Just save some money or go for a used Panasonic 50mm f1.8.
For $169, what do you think of this lens? I'm going to test more Meike lenses in the future, so stay tuned 🥳
The 85/1.4 is the one I would love to see a review on it ✌🏾
For some people especially in the behinning very interesting I think. For professionals not so I think. Chromatic aberation and Lack or sharpnes.
I’d love to hear about the 35mm and the 85mm. I’ve discovered that, weirdly, those are the two focal lengths I tend to use the most when using my zoom lens
L-mount needs more compact lenses! Also there's room for more 1.4 primes

Incredible!!! I'm inching closer and closer to the S5IIX everyday!!!

Glad to have the option. I already have the Lumix 50/1.8, but if they were to come out with, say, a fast ultrawide prime...

Just wanted to plus one this, would like to see the 35mm a lot as it could be very good value.
Glad these exist, although I imagine few people who own an L-mount body don't already own one of the Lumix 50mm primes.

I like B better. I’m surprised. How about pulling manual focus for video?
