Batman Forever is and always will be my favorite Batman film and listening to this is amazing! I literally saw the film in theaters 17 times….so as you can imagine…seeing this cut would be a dream come true for me!
BATMAN 4EVER IS ALSO 1 OF MY FAVE BATFILMS & VAL KILMER WAS MORE MY VISION OF BATS THEN KEATON IF 4 NO OTHER REASON THAN THAT HE MOVED MORE EASILY; AGILITY CAME QUICKER 2 KILMERS VERSION,PLUS HE WAS A MORE HUMAN BRUCE WAYNE WITH A GIRLFRIEND AT THE END NO LESS!
Speaking of the two-face coin flipping scene in Wayne Manor, I remember someone headcannoned it to say two-face was deciding the fate of Chase, Alfred, and Bruce, not flipping it 3 times just for Bruce. I don't think thats the intention when they filmed it but a neat idea. I grew up watching Batman Forever and I dearly wish I could make the pilgrimage to see the Schumacher cut in theater but I can't. Thanks so much for covering this so in depth.
I loved that scene where the invasion of Wayne Manor occurred. Joel did an amazing job filming that scene with Val Kilmer, Nicole Kidman, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, and Michael Gough.
Thank you so much for providing such an in-depth overview of this cut of the movie. I love Batman Forever. It was the first Batman movie I saw theatrically and one I’ve seen countless times. I’d love the opportunity to see this version.
Smooth out the editing, add the credits, put the "Now because I choose to be" scene back in, and this sounds like it'd be the ultimate version of the movie. Really hope it gets released.
Also there were a sequence where you can briefly find on the U2 music video of "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" where Bruce Wayne suddenly wakes up after a nightmare, this scene is included in this "schumacher cut"?
This was just so amazing! I am so happy for you guys to not only see this cut, but enjoy the locations of Kevin Smith. Thank you for talking about a movie that I hope gets a release at some point.
You guys mentioned that the producers had worked with Tommy Lee on The Fugitive but also Joel had just worked with him on The Client which inspired him to bring him in for Harvey.
Ive read the comic book adaption of the movie in the collected paperback edition of all the 4 movies, In it, its starts with 2 face escaping, theres the Riddler drugging Chase after shes capture at the mansion scene, 2 Face/Riddler discussing something and 1 of them saying Jim Morrison was right.
Guys...seriously thank you so much for this. Really enjoyed this podcast. I am watching this a year later... that being said, do you guys have any updates? Like do you know anything at all if this will ever come to fruition for batman fans on physical or digital release?
7:50 watch the flash episode of Fatman Beyond, the guy who gave it to him shows his face on the video and they go into detail about how both of them got the Schumacher Cut.
Stumbled upon this review through one of your comments on Instagram on a Burton Page showing love to Batman Forever. Glad I did. Great review. Love Batman Forever. Val Kilmer has always been a goat Batman. Hope The Schumacher Cut is released someday. I want to watch it and own it.
Put it on a Batman Forever Blu Ray as a bonus feature. Also when you select to watch the workprint Kevin Smith does the intro. Or if they do go & a reedit of the with all the extended & deleted scenes call it Batman Forever extended cut. Also the giant Bat scene descent into mystery from the 89 film would fit.
Quick question if you remember because I have done a lot of research on BF big fan of the movie. From what I read so much was filmed along with Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones acting very serious the question I have is. Any differences of Batman fighting with the thugs at the bank besides added lines are there any differences during the circus scene thank you.
I agree that this shouldn't be called "The Schumacher Cut" because even during publicity for Batman & Robin, Schumacher always said he was not interested in making a dark Batman movie. He wanted it light and comical. So I can't imagine he wanted Batman Forever to be dark. That was always Tim Burton's mandate as Batman Forever Exec Producer. So Schumacher was just shooting the script he was given.
Yeah, Tim Burton's only involvement with Batman Forever was to hire his friend Joel Schumacher as director, and helping out hiring Lee and Janet Scott Batchler to write the screenplay for the film, and that's why in the opening credits of Batman Forever, Burton was credited as producer.
Schumacher was a company man, he'll say whatever was needed and make whatever movie he was told to make. The fact is, he submitted a BF movie more akin to Tim Burton's movies but changes were ordered by WB and subsequently, remain for B&R.
Schmacher actually originally wanted to do Batman: Year One as he claims that to be his favorite Batman story, but the company said they wanted a family friendly movie, after the Returns backlash at the time, so he cave into those demands and did a movie that was inspired by the Batman stories he read as a kid from the 40s to 50s while trying to balance that darker version he wanted to have in the first place.
@@DarkHeroesForever And Batman Forever had a good balance of bright and dark, and yes, for me, Joel's Batman is a continuation of Tim's Batman (I don't care about the Batman 89 comic and the Flash movie, because for me, they're canonical).
I really like both the hair & nail salon scene, plus the talking head lambasting Batman on TV. The salon scene shows Riddler's technical ability to throw the Batcomputer off, explaining WHY Batman didn't stop their heists. It also sets up how and why Riddler can navigate the Batcave during the raid on Wayne Manor. As for 'Kenneth Frequency', that's a pull from the TV segments in The Dark Knight Returns, shot and laid out just like the comic panels. The guy talks in a shrill tone and is patronisingly verbose, but that's on purpose. You guys say he was terrible and should have been fired, but like... annoying talking head on television is what he was going for and it worked.
The original unfilmed ending of Batman forever was epic It involved Batman hallucinating his parents death from riddlers gas It also had quick shots of joker car woman etc A playback of all of Batman’s enemies or failures as riddler probes the mind of Batman from his device
@@filmdirt Nah, I think it was cut for budgetary reasons. It would have been a very elaborate sequence with a bunch of different special effects. This was all in the original script.
Those were from the earlier drafts of Batman Forever meant for Michael Keaton to return. When Val Kilmer was selected as Michael's successor, they were rewritten several times, and it had only reference Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman during the "Batsignal is not a beeper" scene, Bruce talking to Dick about his past actions in the Batcave after the night fight with the Neon Gang, and the young Jack Napier killing Thomas and Martha Wayne in the flashbacks.
they need a Danny elfman or the batman composer or even the cartoon composer to do a new batman forever director's also get rid of all the bad scenes and add more action scenes
Not sure that I like this new train of thought that anything good with Batman Forever is attributed to Schumacher, but anything bad is attributed to other parties. In this video you blame WB, Tommy Lee Jones, and Elliot Goldenthall. No mention of how Schumacher should’ve directed Jones into giving a good performance or how he should’ve asked Goldenthall to tone down the score. I’m sure WB is partially responsible for how the theatrical cut turned out, but let’s not act like Schumacher doesn’t also share partial blame for how it turned out.
True, it's a weird revaluation of a fairly mediocre film. Although I know people blame Schumacher but if you compare it to the Lost Boys, the tone does seem weird.
@@brooksproductions9573 Like most people that defend this movie, I grew up with the film. Before I discovered Batman 1989 I’d say Forever was the primary Batman film I’d watch all the time. However, looking at it today as you said it’s fairly mediocre and forgettable. I think Kilmer gives a flat performance, Tommy Lee Jones is terrible, Chase Meridian is poorly written, and once Dick Grayson becomes Robin he’s wasted. Also, the Bruce Wayne arc feels incomplete and doesn’t make much sense due to everything that was edited out of it. To me it feels like the die hard fans of this film are pulling in aspects and details from the novelization, the script, and the deleted scenes and creating a better film in their heads. As it stands I can still enjoy the theatrical cut, but it’s definitely a lower tier Batflick for me. Having said all of that, I’m definitely interested in seeing a different cut of it. I do think the bits and pieces that are discussed in this video are vital to the overall story. And don’t get me wrong, I do think Schumacher was a talented filmmaker but he just made some strange decisions on these films. It certainly doesn’t feel like the same filmmaker that made Lost Boys and Falling Down.
@jalenjohnson1662 I know right. This is a weird period in Schumachers career. I'm always up for an alternative cut or edit of a film. I think the cuts will make the film more complete, but it's not going to radically change the quality.
