This was an impromptu video and I wanted it to be more of a serious toned discussion because of the topic. I apologize about all the “um” and stutters, but I hope you take something away from this video to stay safe and aware during your next outdoor adventure. Thanks for watching!

Excellent advice. There seems to be little awareness among people generally, of the dangers you highlight. The surprisingly large number of people who go missing on solo hikes is not broadly known and rarely discussed. As we age, the vulnerability to some of these dangers rises sharply. Consequently, experienced and knowledgeable older solo hikers are well-represented among the stats of people who disappear in our forests. Nice job. I'll pass this along. By the way, photography and birding can be, by their very nature, incredibly distracting. A person roaming through the forest looking in the trees trying to spot an owl can be very vulnerable. We are even worse when we actually spot what we are looking for. :)

Thank you Stan. I completely agree and that is why I wanted to talk more on this subject. I will probably make more videos that are articulated better. This was totally impromptu since that morning a tree fell near my tent. To your point about us being distracted. That is a incredible point to make. We're always looking around and sometimes that can lead to tripping, slipping or falling off step edges. I know personally I have done risky things for the shot, but I also do my best to prepare for situations and train how to handle certain terrain. Nature is wild and we always have to remember that while enjoying it.

Bear spray = good only for bears when wind direction is optimal
Smith and Wesson friends = good for bears, two legged walking threatening types of animals and anything in between. Works in any weather condition.

lol true a Smith and Wesson is good for all that. But now you're asking to deal with the feds lol. Plus wind wont be a factor if you're spraying a bear between 5-8 feet away haha
