I know you guys will not believe me when I say this, but at 56 years of age, I am just now discovering Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and I am truly in love. I have listened to all of his music now for the past few weeks non stop. Chalk it up to a long wasted life just trying to survive. I love his music and have already bought 3 CD"s as well as one of the Traveling Wilbury's. Sad but true. Better now than never.
Never too late to discover his music. Ive been listening since I was 8yrs old LOL There is a TPATH song for every stage, every major experience and everything in between in my life. His music takes me to a wonderful place, I cant even describe. Make sure you listen to some Mudcrutch too! Depot street, Lost in your eyes, Maria, Crystal River...
I'm 55 and have listened to him from the start. When the bass line from Breakdown first came out of my speakers I was hooked! :) Glad you found the good stuff! #Peace!
You guys don't get it. An in-depth interview of this quality is almost unique among the few interviews Tom Petty did. This is pure gold. RIP, Tom and thank you for making my life richer.
This interview shows why we are losing a generation that cannot be replaced in rock and roll. Tom and the Heartbreakers were real, true musicians. They were the analog generation...always better live, and got better with age, like fine wine. Today we have folks who masquerade as musicians, they hold the guitar and act like they can play it, they digitally edit their mistakes...there is so little magic in their music. If you are a young musician try to dive into a mind like TP and learn how it is done right! Then go make some new magic of your own, but keep it live and real, and maybe one day your work will live forever like his will!
Edgar, you hit it right on the head brother, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers gave us real music and that's what made them great. Thank you for your comment and it was spot on my friend and everyone needs to read your post. ~~~ Ricky ~~~
Yes I agree TOTALLY Before the 40th a. tour he spent 2 years often producing young bands whom he thought were playing real rock and roll so he would not dismiss a generation -- since we're in interview territory his last speech at MusiCares was about promoting young talent and there is lots out there; the getting recognition process is radically different now. I just recently heard a song ... Song for Tom Petty by a youngish band Satin Cowboy and the Seven Deadly Sins and they were seriously good, etc.
Hey man, I love Tom Petty, this is my stuff, got a wilder set coming in two days. Hope you all dig it. th-cam.com/video/d9bi7eWQBJY/w-d-xo.html Feed back welcome
I still find it hard to believe that Tom is no longer here. I can't even imagine how his family and bandmates must feel. I still tear up listening to his music. Such a good soul and a tremendous songwriter....one of the best. And the Heartbreakers were a big part of that success as well. We love you and miss you Tom....fly high brother!
Your comment is three years old now, but damn... it still hurts to know he's not with us. That whole stretch of two or three years was tragic... I lost several of my favorite musicians (namely, Tom Petty and Gregg Allman) and then my dad... it was an end of an era on many levels for me. It often occurs to me that almost all of the formidable men that shaped my life are now mostly gone.
@@american_cosmic very sorry to hear about all of that, especially the loss of your Dad. Keep your head up man, I don’t know you but I would guess there are people that need you. Not minimizing your losses though. That’s tough.
@@rdmkeytohwy I appreciate that. It was back in 2018, I'm good now. Thanks though. But certain things remind me of him, like Tom Petty... TP was one of my dad's all-time favorites and my very first introduction to rock music was riding around in my dad's car listening to Tom Petty and Neil Young. Very fond memories!
I recently saw a Tom Petty cover band and I teared up at the first song. I wasn’t expecting that. I guess I was sad I never got to see him live. It’s a huge loss for me. I loved that man.
We really were treated with a beautiful gift of him in this world, to soon to get his wings at 66 ?.....feels so unreal, ...guess they were impatient up there in heaven waiting around for his great music up there, ….heaven to needs iconic music heros to lead them, but those gone for now is only going to be there to great us coming into our next life after this one, i like to think this life were in now is stages of a butter fly....tom gotten his wings to perpell into another amzing beautiful world that awaits us all after this one, and better beleave will have him rocking out his iconic famous songs when we have reached our selves that next chapter, page in our evelotion
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers never really stopped being a great garage band. Something beyond planning. They just did great work. I miss them everyday. They are eternal.
He was an old soul in a timeless venue. He wrote and sang about ordinary people and events. To express the deep feeling or meaning. You didn't hav to be high or drunk. Just open your heart and mind at the same time and you have a great tom petty song with a message. Young or old it went directly to that part of your heart and brain. The words jus poured out. You felt it thru your entire being...that's a Tom Petty song. The band, the words, music went right to your heart. And you knew exactly what he was trying to tell you. What to feel. You are not the first to walk this path. To learn from the past and forge forward and learn from the past. Every lite fear and fragment of truth in your heart. Put to music with some of the finest musicians to ever catch a break. In their talent, dreams and karma that the 70''s, 80's and beyond could bless the Heartbreakers with. He, they embraced all humans, problems and solutions available at that time. War, peace. Love and heartbreak. Extreme luck in love and lessons. Genuine heartbreak and totally knock of your feet love a d joy. Hope in people, events and all possibilities. Some call it luck, skill, blessed or plain old faith in the simplest and grandest things in life. Family, friends, joy, dance and that inner voice that will never steer you wrong. If you never been low you don't know how to raise yourself to new and great heights! Sometimes you loose. Sometimes you win. And if you lucky enough to do both you become a wise and mostly satisfied human being. Giving, sharing, laughing and growing. Thank you Mr. Tom Petty!
That part toward the end where Tom's talking about how there is no bonus track and how this is why people find him difficult, there's just something beautiful about that moment. What blows me away is this: I've listened to Tom Petty for 20 years and even performed some Tom Petty songs for years but I never heard or read an interview at least nothing more than a few soundbites. In spite of this, his personality seems to be exactly as I had always imagined. That's true artistry, when the art almost subliminally conjures up the very personality of it's creator. I'm more of a Tom Petty fan with each passing day.
Well, each time that I listen to his music, I like it and its creator a little more. I never disliked him but have steadily become more of a full-on fan.
It took me until my late 30s until I started feeling like I didn't need to try to be somebody else artistically. I was censoring myself quite terribly for 20 years. Especially in the later 10. I'm putting out my debut album this autumn if I maintain schedule and it's looking good so far. Better late than never.
Don't know why but the 2 in depth interviews Tom granted were with Canadian journalists -- that in itself means nothing he gave Peter Bogdanovich and Warren Zane free rein respectively. As a born leader I think he knew when he found true talent to work with and also when not to interfere; the story of Jimmy Iovine is a good illustration of his instincts when to sever ties not serving the music.
That's what impresses me the most - he impressed a few great wordsmiths - Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, and Bruce Springsteen. These people are his peers, and then he presented the words with a really great rock band. We will miss him, indeed.
David Smith you said something really important -- these were his peers. And he didn't always get recognition; this interview in my view is stellar way out of the league of most interviews with rock artists and then he died and no-one watches it anymore. People are still deciding whether Dylan is God or not, haven't we sorted that out yet???
@@DavidSmith-ss1cg Sorry should have replied directly see above - I get what you mean but .. he impressed a few great wordsmiths ... I'm a woman and Stevie Nicks along with Joni Mitchell were my sister's heroes but name me one person Tom had to ask to write material for him?????? Surely it's evident that he rates a kind of recognition that despites his avowed ambition he merited and did not receive.
This interview is a fantastic example: Jian allows the guest to think. As fun as a guest's answer is to watch the guest think. Jian stays quiet and allows the process to work. He does not feel the need to fill in the pause for the guest; he will let it hang until the guest says more. He is the best modern interviewer I have seen.
ya hes a great journalist but he sabotaged his career kinda sad.. his ego swallowed him whhole, lol just my opinion. cool userrname pic btw tom petty is THE real definitiion of old school rock n roll
Finally...A guy who asks thoughtfull questions....nobody cares what Tom's favourite colour is!...lol Musicians like myself always appreciate 'music talk'
I am watching this with a very heavy heart. We are losing sooo many truly great artists the past few years, much too soon. Tom Petty is describing an era of music that will soon be lost forever, along with the vinyl and album inspired recordings. Losing him and losing that era is extremely sad. It is a great loss to this world and unfortunately will continue to be replaced by more and more "Disposably Famous". Thank you for the beautiful music Tom and all the great memories that go along with it, which I will forever cherish
I have faith that albums will come back into vogue.....they are outselling other physical forms of music now. Stuff comes back around. And there are still a lot of bands out there who list Tom Petty and others like him as influences. Real rock is not dead, it's alive in places all over, small clubs and theaters in Austin, TX and Nashville, TN. But, there will never be another Tom Petty. He and his band were the best at what they did and their albums will still be appreciated long after we are gone. Trying to encourage you and give you hope. I feel the loss in my gut, too man. The world lost a great one when he passed. Glad i was in the generation who grew up listening to him and the Heartbreakers.
@@deborahchesser7375 yeah losing Eddie made me cry to be honest. Nobody could swing like Ed! What a talent and an original. No one after him playing that style could touch him. The man was so good. At a loss for words here really. Their first six albums are classics. Not a bad tune on them. Fair Warning is my favorite. Thank God we still have the music.
Some of us still believe in albums. You don't sit down and listen to a band play one song. You listen for an evening to the band playing their songs or a friend playing songs in your living room.
There is key pieces of the greatness of music missing from the mainstream and we have to bring them back so the sheep that gargle everything they throw at them can see how much better it can really be and to not just accept what they throw at us.
Too meaning "much". BTW there are great younger unknown musicians playing at clubs, lounges, local shows just like Tom did when he was an unknown musician

I miss him! I have watched hours and hours of youtube videos and interviews of Tom and the Heartbreakers and I still listen to them all everynight until I fall asleep. They are the real deal!
I raised my kids on Tom Petty! They first saw him when they were 5, 6 and 7 years old! Now they are in their mid thirties, and I am in my mid sixties, and we still all listen to him!
I have always been a Petty fan but this last year it’s been on another level. Going thru a very tough time and I have just hung onto TPATHB like my life depends on it. Truly magical and I am forever grateful
My son was born in 2000 and he listened to Tom from day one. Tom Taught him what good music is... we got to go to two of his concerts together and it was a mom and son thing...in our glory both times and told each other we would go anytime we could. When Tom died we mourned not just him but this dream of all of the concerts to come. I really miss him. I saw him so many times and had a prema smile and feeling inside that I can’t describe. Miss you Tom!
Why Lord. A part of my life died when Tom Petty passed away. He helped me through so much in my life. Thank you and thanks to all whom were apart of the great music you gave us Tom. I only wished I would have seen you play live a lot more then I did. I definitely regret not having done so. You are and will always be missed. RIP Mr. Petty. You are now officially Into the great wide open!
What a Cool Cat 😎 I have not been so crushed losing one of the best, ever. I can’t think of another “Rock Legend” who will break my heart like losing Tom Petty. I am so very grateful to have the videos and concerts on TH-cam . I am grateful for Sirius XM Tom Petty ch31 to listen to a wide verity of songs that aren’t even in the top 50. Thank you so much for leaving a lot of you behind. Will always miss you our Friend 💔
2018 summer now: you were so prescient 3 yrs ago. I am glad they will release Buried Treasures in Sep; something eternal in this music. I treasure this interview because Tom did so few with his defences down and he really is candid and one can glimpse the thoughtful, brilliant man behind his necessary social persona. I loved that old movie Z about the take-over in Greece by the military in the 60s. The letter Z meant He Lives. So RIP and yes, He lives.
I just have to say that becoming a TomPetty fan was one of the best choices I ever made and ever will........his music and concerts have brought so much to my life and continue to do so.........if you dont know all his music, do yourself a huge favor and look into them....Thank you |Tom
Tom is and will always be the great rocker of the last 40 years. Since 1977 or so, he did the great feat of reinventing rock with immense charm and melodic genius. He did it by being curious and studious. His talent never was any more apparent than live. His music just cooked and wailed.
I could listen to Tom for a long time; he's often in rock documentaries making comments too. Being a fan since the late 70s when I was 12, one of the biggest things I've liked about Tom is his consistency while navigating the changes in sounds through the decades. While many 70s rock bands had to make a big transition into the 80s, which ired many fans, Petty's music was able to sail through the 80s and early 90s without resorting to the dreaded synthesizer, the bells and whistles, and outside writers that many bands gave into in order to get hits, and well, not have the label drop them. His MTV videos were good too...it just worked for him, and it was a relief that at least one 70s band didn't do this big about-face. He may kind of veer off into something slightly different, but it sounds like him, and if the album isn't great and has no hits, it's still respectable, not "Oh this is so god-awful." And I have also always considered him a great lyricist. It's easy to remember lines from them and sing them in your head. And in "Here Comes My Girl" many of us like that little part "watch her walk." Just one of those little decisions that everyone thinks is so cool. Thanks.
RIP TOM PETTY! We've lost a maestro and an example of artistic integrity. Let's study his art and craft while the world and the music goes in the wrong direction, hoping for a change in the future.
Man, I already miss Tom. So unassuming. Genuinely digs what he does. As a muso myself i'm in awe of Tom and his phenomenal band. One of the truly great writers. He leaves a hole that can't be filled but his music and the gift he gave us with the Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch and Wilburys will live forever!
Tom wrote anthems that tapped into the yearning and humanity of the American identity. So nice to have a spokesperson who respected us and gave us his best. I want to say we were lucky to have him at all, and even though that's true, it is somehow small comfort right now.
The things that Tom Petty says in this video and part 2 are really wise. If you ever write a song you feel the music the way he explains here. Exactly. And we are less and less sensitive with our sunglasses and iphones, avoiding the persons you have by your side. It´s a pitty that Jian interrupted sometimes the talk of Tom Petty to ask the questions he thought were important. Mr Ghomeshi, when you have a wise man feeling comfortable and explaining his ideas, let him finish. The heart needs time to expose its things
Knowing what I know about Ghomeshi's tastes in music, and given the rocky really long interviews he did with Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, this is arguably the best long interview I've seen with Tom. Tom was the essential introvert who created a social persona, the trickster with the Mad Hatter hat and the sunglasses, or the laid-back southern guy who only said something when he had … this is a unique interview. Try and watch it again after 4 years and think about it. I honour your comment.
Well Ghomeshi was fired by the CBC for other reasons shortly after; if you saw his interviews with Neil Young or Joni Mitchell it could have erupted in Neil Young's case into a fist fight -- hear you.
@@drtimoshea4087 LOL! Exactly. Great point. This culture sucks & doesn't have much longer left. Bunch of brainwashed, BIG PHARMA "influenced" mornons who actually believes our government has our best interest at heart. We ha e approx 5 years left before most of us are Dead. If you're Jabbed, then your soul, higher self is ripe for being hijacked. Microwave warfare. The et Invasion already happened. We Are slaves worshipping false idols. We've been duped bigtime.
God yes. THIS. The interviewer interrupts the artist……nothing new. And petty knew technology was ruining the actual industry. uCan’t we just hear this legend talk? Omg. I think he knew too much, rebelled and they killed him. My conspiracy mind lol
And therein lies the greatest talent Tom and the band have. Making and recording excellent music. I'm sure they've made some stinkers, but they're so good at weeding them out. I've listened to every album all the way through, and despite there being very many, every single one is solid. He and the Heartbreakers are probably the only artists whose B-sides I consistently love as much as the singles, maybe more-so. Brilliant musicians and wonderful music makers.
What a fantastic interview. The guy does does a great job. A genuine mix of respectful yet interesting questions. That’s how you interview a legend giving an insight without destroying the magic. Thanks so much for posting this.
Like so many .....I've "discovered" T.Petty since he passed. I've known about him for years..but the only thing I could tell you was, he's the dude that wears that hat (love it!) and he was a member of the Wilbury's. WHERE was I all this time? Now I can't get enough of their music, his interviews. Esp the interviews because his insight into life and music are truly profound; then there is his humor. Then thru all of this is his downright "I started out a shit-kicker from Gainsville, and I'm still a shit-kicker" attitude even with all the things that have come his way.
@@glennpainter9985 In my humble opinion...they still ARE the best band. Tom took the same rock'n'roll music he grew up with (me too) and made it better. He cared about what kind of music they produced, and cared for his fans as well. It was real, and it was obvious when ever they took the stage. Thank you so much Tom, and ALL the Heartbreakers.
Love how he's talking about recording Free Falling and how he went home and played the rough mix all night. I only just heard that song two weeks ago. The verse I was thinking "ok", then it got to the chorus and I was like "Woah. That's something". Pretty rare for me to have that moment these days. Tom = Awesome.
Proud to say that I saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Point Depot Dublin Ireland March 1992. I was 23 and we drove up from Cork for the gig. Great memories. RIP Tom ❤
Tom was right when he was talking about a greatest hits album then all of a sudden there's a new track at the end. I'm always like "Its a GREATEST HITS album! A new song is not a greatest hit! Put that darn song on your next record!
I know Mr Petty doesn't like interviews and I'm so glad he trusts his intuition when he does allow certain journalists, biographers etc. to put it out there. And then he gets to lead his own life. Grateful for this great, very thoughtful and candid exchange. Hope there may be one or two more in the future, if and when he deems necessary. A man of great integrity and humour. True grit? Certainly, among many other facets of his life and art. A consummate poet? Absolutely.
I grew up in the late 60s early 70s. But it wasn’t until I met my husband in 1978, I begin to appreciate a lot of music. He introduced me to Tom Petty, and the Heartbreakers as well as others. One of my favorite songs to sing out loud when we went to Gatlinburg, Tennessee every September for the Rod run in his 55 Chevy, “ Free Fallin’” .
I loved Tom's collaboration with Stevie Nicks, and I always wished he would do something similar with Chrissie Hynde. They seem like a natural fit to me.
I am in 2 minds on that one. Stevie Nicks pursued him with single minded zeal almost like a stalker; their ve real friendship has more to do with Tom's forebearance than a desire to work with a female artist.
Incredible interview. Petty is incredibly thoughtful, incredibly illuminating, incredibly unpretentious for such a complete musical genius. The interviewer is fantastically engaged and real. Wow.
Insightful. Very good interview. Tom's my hero and the main reason I even got into playing music. You almost hang on every word he says. He's that good!
I have had role models throughout my life. In all walks of life. My Dad was perhaps my first, but Tom remains right up there. He needed, I think, a lot of protection --- the sunglasses etc., the trickster persona, but all you had to do was listen to the music and whatever persona he adopted there was an incredible, deep emotional honesty that has not been surpassed. I love all kinds of music, but look at rock n roll ... Springsteen .. ok my Dad liked him a lot and Dylan etc. but they were alpha guys who really wanted recognition -- forget Clarence Bruce was The Boss, and Tom was NEVER that. His truth is in the music.
@@brainsareus What questions would you have asked? I've seen TP be patient with fledgling interviewers after a concert or funny for 3 minutes on a late night talk show but he was thoughtful and thinking here.
@@brainsareus Spot on. And oftentimes, the interviewer did not have the wherewithal to come up with his own questions - he tended to have his "underlings" do it. This is the halfwit that admittedly choked his oftentimes much younger dates because he "liked rough sex" but was not a fan of getting consent from them (ask the women). sycophanticembarrasses
Well, I have been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers since I was a kid. And they were kids. Never ever gets old. I'd love to see a movie of their careers made. From early days in Gainsville to now.
I am Canadian. I have loved this music and been helped by this music and written about this music, but I am bemused that the one real time (2 if you include Peter Mansbridge) that Tom Petty spoke as the thoughtful, articulate, reflective extraordinary man he was happened in this 2 part interview, which, after his death, jackels gathering, was plundered and a lot of really bad stuff got out there, like Dana trying to call Emergency etc. It was obscene. Months after his death he is still with us. I think the most beloved of his songs is Learning to Fly. So many people wrote under their favorite songs: RIP he is still out there and he can fly now. His music helped me through my life and my friend has sort of grown up new generation kids who cannot get enough of his music. I think that is the best gift we can give him now: keep him alive in our memories, because he certainly enriched ours.
Jian is sooo good. e.g. Tom mentions old men, and Jian picks up on it: Are you old men? Reiterates the words of the guest to delve into their mind. So perceptive, so subtle. Thanks, Jian!
Funny that you mention Jian's habit of coming back with a quick question (e.g., "Are you old men?") in a positive light. I found it to be a bit annoying and not very creative, and it's actually one of the things that annoys me about his interviewing style. Like at 21:54: Jian: Well, you're famous. Tom Petty: Am I? Jian: Aren't you? I mean, come on. What a silly response from Jian. I do, however, appreciate (like coolkayaker1 pointed out) Jian's ability to, at times, let the interviewee think and his/her stream of consciousness come to mind.
Sure, it's a skill, jimreid5, in this day and age where the interviewer is louder and gets more lines than the the guest. I find that Jian lives the famous line of Mark Twain: "It's better to remain silent and seem a fool than to speak and leave no doubt." lol But, I do respect your thoughts. It is sad to see Jian in court, weather wrongly or rightly, and not behind a mic.
Very nice interview, Tom Petty was very thoughtful and honest. I like how he always brings the Heartbreakers to the forefront of his interviews and tells us all how much he respects all of them and that they’re just the best band. I like every thing he says. “Heart Of The Matter”R.I.P. 😔🧚🏻♂️ Thank you.
his voice was the main thing...to me his songs are written around his unique vocal ability of hitting extremely high notes in an unusual and pleasing-sounding way that doesnt seem high unless you try it yourself. Most male singers cant sing his songs well because it was such an unusual ability, I wish he'd been asked about this, surely he knew he had a golden vocal ability that cant be emulated effectively. I wonder if he always had this or did it develop over time (he had it in the earliest Mudcrutch songs) and how much did smoking contribute and how did he never seem to lose the ability to hit the high notes? He's one of those people that not only his death was sad but that that unique instrument, his voice, died with him. Great interview, I was riveted!
96 kid here, I remember my dad playing American Girl when I was a kid in the back of the car and trying to sing like him, and so many other songs and I never who sang them, just that iconic voice and guitar sound, 20 years later I became addicted to his music and the nostalgia is brought, I planned on trying to see him in concert my Senior year, but weeks later, he passed away… I can’t imagine what it was like to see that amount of talent live
So real, so wise, grounded in reality, a true artist in every sense of the word. I am perpetually astounded by the depth and intellect of this man, a man with so much soul and integrity. No one can hold a candle to this man. His gifts continue to lift, sustain, inspire, and make us ponder and think. Love and miss this man. R.I.P. Tom.
He makes me feel with his music. Feel things that I never allowed before in 56 yrs. I am now after 2 yrs consumned with the music just to cope with the loss of Tommy. He was above the rest.
It a if I just discovered a new art form to listen to Jian do an interview with an artist. He gives the artist such a feeling of comfort that the real human being comes out. Why does this guy not have his own talk show all through North America?
The only thing that frustrates me about this is the interviewers inability to understand sarcasm. It’s seemed to be part of Tom’s personality and I love it.
Putting your creative process into words has got to be difficult to say the least. Very generous of Tom to be willing to do this conversation on such a level. Wonderful talking. Nothing cynical from Tom. He’s a consummate artist. Heartbreakers are consummate artists. Tom is so generous with this guy. The guy is trying so hard to sink Tom into a paralysis of analysis. Creating art is done on its own terms. It’s like the art creates the artist in the most private moments. Tom, Your art 🖼 is beautiful to me. I stand before a painting and let it work on my consciousness. I don’t want to know what it means to the artist. Don’t tell me anything. Let me have my privilege. And I thank you.
Tom Petty, I grew up with you. I was almost 17 when I bought Damn the Torpedoes and all the albums that followed. Listened to you constantly, you never changed always remained yourself. I am brokenhearted that you are gone, I will miss you so much. God rest your soul. xx
I like the way he speaks with no ums and uhs. His sentences are thought out and measured, then spoken. In other words, unlike most people, he thinks before he speaks.
Well I think there is such a thing as Tom speak: his social persona is southern laid back and he uses ain't and money is bread and we're down -- unconscious Kerouac maybe ... there's no question that he's thoughtful and knows how to listen intently, in this case his interviewer, people have commented over the years (his shades were prescription glasses by the way but no question that that became part of his social armour as he became non-disposably famous)... another unconscious mannerism is that he doesn't sustain eye contact when speaking; there is something formidable going on in his head while replying or speaking. This interview is probably the most sustained thoughtful one I've seen but his dark incredibly funny side comes out in other public encounters and I appreciate it all. I love witty fast talking over educated people like Stephen Fry because that's where I live too, in my head -- for an artist like Tom Petty, well I think poetry and music combined use different circuits of the brain so to render his experience into everyday prose is probably an act of translation - and I have no doubt he would tell me I'm over analysing and yeah, he'd be right.
@@nickelmickel4170 I watched a video of mike wallace and rod serling where someone made a similar comment, bunch of likes and comments agreeing with the OP. Went to a random point in the interview and it was the same deal. Full of uhs and you knows. People were criticizing me for pointing it out. Later went to another random point in the video, same thing. Sigh.
Miss you, Tom. Honored to have seen your last show at the Gorge in 2010. Was 20, and still remember how powerful it felt to hear like 25,000 people singing “free falling”
Love you Tom, I was so grateful to see you and the Heartbreakers live and it was one of my favorite shows of all time. the 40th anniversary tour. Amazing.
What a great interview. A true artist, not just a 'band'. No other bands now a days have this gift that Tom along (including) with the Heartbreakers had...There was a gift in this combination of musicians truly!! A very true connection to each other's strength...they were all Heartbreakers!!!
Alice Cooper adored him too. I used to listen to Alice's radio program nightly on one of our Aussie radio channels. He always played at 3 Tom Petty songs nightly. Always praised him.
Petty is EXACTLY right, people can’t play anymore. There is no comparison to The energy you get from a group playing live vs. people playing a part on different tracks.
Prop, I completely agree and I had the pleasure of seeing Petty and the heartbreakers here in New Orleans in 2002. Amazing show!! Another band that can play with a ton of energy and I've seen Green Day twice. Your statement is correct and on point ☝️.
Their will never ever be a Tom Petty again. I loved him without knowing him. He was a wonderful man. A great artist and in intelligent he was. I feel like I lost a family member. Love his voice. And so good looking. He aged like a fine wine.
RIP Tom Petty. Your music will still keep the spirit live. You rock Petty. You have been a great friend. You will be missed by all of us in the concert world.
Oh and You DEF have to watch Running down a dream, a 4 hour documentary on the band. Amazing.
Lindsay Wallace-McCarty I used to live in Crystal River FL :)
I'm 55 and have listened to him from the start. When the bass line from Breakdown first came out of my speakers I was hooked! :) Glad you found the good stuff! #Peace!
I love how he references so much of fl in his music, 441, old kings road, kings highway, glenn springs pool, crystal river..
You guys don't get it. An in-depth interview of this quality is almost unique among the few interviews Tom Petty did. This is pure gold. RIP, Tom and thank you for making my life richer.
Outstanding
Very interesting
Perfectly put, Evelyn.
~~~ Ricky ~~~
thank u u bet

Feed back welcome
Just how you want a legend to be... not cocky, real, thoughtful, funny. "The Heartbreakers? We haven't had a conversation in decades." Love it.
Confidence and "ego" are two different things. He doesn't come across as cocky but as sure of what he wants to do and of who he is.
RIGHT ON Glenn
What in the HELL do 51 people have anything to dislike about this video? Tom is and will always be a legend. The GOAT.
They are probably not musicians....listen to Fm playlists and nothing else.
Probably more to do with the host. He's a Me Too legend.
R.I.P. Mr Petty... We got lucky babe when we found you.
❤️❤️ beautifully said..
Tom is the epitome of cool😎 He left us way too soon😥 R.I.P
I wish I understood more about what makes his personality come through so clearly and wonder if my own music does the same to any degree.
To be called by Bob Dylan a "masterful poet," now that's incredibly high praise, folks.
Man that's all you really need for affirmation
+coolkayaker1 agreed! he's an excellent interviewer.
MrCloudseeker Good and true observation. Thanks for pointing that out.
he is one of my favorite interviewers - love nardwaur too, they fill different voids
ya hes a great journalist but he sabotaged his career kinda sad.. his ego swallowed him whhole, lol just my opinion. cool userrname pic btw tom petty is THE real definitiion of old school rock n roll
you know he gets off on beating his girlfriend's wile having sex got in to a lot of trouble not a good guy
Finally...A guy who asks thoughtfull questions....nobody cares what Tom's favourite colour is!...lol Musicians like myself always appreciate 'music talk'
The interviewer is a slavish devotee
@@rdmkeytohwy it really sucks losing him and then Eddie, the music of our lives
This guy is one of the best interviewers around. RIP Tom and thank you from the bottom of my heart for the music.
"Old school" true OG, they don't make them like this anymore, love Tom Petty. Only one if a few left.
Why is Tom Petty so fucking cool?
James Bond Chuck Norris took lessons from Tom Petty - in EVERYTHING!
because he seems genuine when he talks about his fans and his music and he's one of the best songwriters of our generation.
In comparison, the interviewer is naive & clueless.
tom petty is my fave. check out my cd 'north of yesterday' on spotify, or utube, amazon. walmart.
tom petty learning to fly
"We try not to work on stuff we don't believe in" very helpful. Thank you Tom
I love Tom's honesty. We are losing good musicians way to fast.
Too meaning "much". BTW there are great younger unknown musicians playing at clubs, lounges, local shows just like Tom did when he was an unknown musician
Tom Petty was an American Treasure: He's going to be remembered as "The Mark Twain of Rock & Roll".
The Mark Twain of Rock and Roll …. man I want to quote that ("pretending I'm Samuel Clemens" etc.), you nailed it!!!!

RIP Mr. Petty. A true rocker, this type of legend is in extinction. Enjoy him while you can.
And we did. RIP Tom, thanks for all the years of good times.
You were so right, now he's gone and theres a hole in music and in us where Tom used to be. Where Tom should be.
He’s inspired so many people - I have a song, “Call Me Petty” which is in gratitude to him.... RIP Tom Petty!
i’m gonna miss him so damn much, thankfully he left behind his legacy for us all to enjoy. amazing story teller/musician. 💜
I just have to say that becoming a TomPetty fan was one of the best choices I ever made and ever will........his music and concerts have brought so much to my life and continue to do so.........if you dont know all his music, do yourself a huge favor and look into them....Thank you |Tom
What an excellent musician. He's absolutely right. RIP
God, I love his honesty..........I mean, really, he is so damn honest about the process and results of songwriting and recording....
Quite right; brilliant content.
Tom is and will always be the great rocker of the last 40 years. Since 1977 or so, he did the great feat of reinventing rock with immense charm and melodic genius. He did it by being curious and studious. His talent never was any more apparent than live. His music just cooked and wailed.
Miss you already Tom. You were a gift to us.
Thanks.
Lot's of synth in Tom's music. Listen closer...You Got Lucky, Don'T Come Around Here No More...many synth driven hits.
This is my favorite Tom Petty interview. RIP, Tom.
The interviewer has a good pace and let's the interviewee speak.
RIP TOM PETTY! We've lost a maestro and an example of artistic integrity. Let's study his art and craft while the world and the music goes in the wrong direction, hoping for a change in the future.
Tom's aged SO well. Wow. He looks so damn cool at 63! He's also really smart and sincere.
Well Ghomeshi was fired by the CBC for other reasons shortly after; if you saw his interviews with Neil Young or Joni Mitchell it could have erupted in Neil Young's case into a fist fight -- hear you.
like any corporate lackey he felt he had to keep things "popping" - assuming everyone has the same short attention span as he does
@@drtimoshea4087 LOL! Exactly. Great point. This culture sucks & doesn't have much longer left. God yes.
Not all that great , Jian was indeed free falling and he was never able to come back to where he wanted to be..
Sad about Jian. I used to love listening to him on the Q at night. I agree he does a great job here.

They were the best band at that time Glenn. 1991.
As a lifelong fan of TP and the Heartbreakers, I gotta say he was the most genuine guy who really seemed to want what was best for his fans
"Disposable famous"... what a great line... this interview is packed with wisdom!
RIP Tom
❤
A great interview. His family ,band and friends must be inconsolable. What a humble guy. He is truly missed.
Rest in peace Tom you wear a true musician. Your music will live on forever
RIP Tom.. All time favorite since I was a small child. I'll miss you.
His commitment to making albums speaks volumes on what’s lacking with today’s music.
Tom was right when he was talking about a greatest hits album then all of a sudden there's a new track at the end. I'm always like "Its a GREATEST HITS album! A new song is not a greatest hit! Put that darn song on your next record!
Can someone time capsule this and keep it safe so future generations remember what music was ? ❤❤
Absolutely.
God he is just wonderful.
Just saw Tom in concert in Edmonton . Honoured to be there. A priviledge
I always thought they look like a negative print of each other. Twins from different mothers.
I am in 2 minds on that one. Stevie Nicks pursued him with single minded zeal almost like a stalker; their ve real friendship has more to do with Tom's forebearance than a desire to work with a female artist.
Now that would have been an awesome combination Tom and Chrissie 👍😃👍
Incredible interview. Petty is incredibly thoughtful, incredibly illuminating, incredibly unpretentious for such a complete musical genius. The interviewer is fantastically engaged and real. Wow.
Couldn't agree more Steve.
I was just waiting for Tom to ask "would you ask Billy Bob Thornton that?"
That would have been so great.
jimreid5 A man by the name of Forrest J. Ackerman, who passed away quite recently...
Insightful. Very good interview. Tom's my hero and the main reason I even got into playing music. You almost hang on every word he says. He's that good!
No...........the interviewer,is a childish moron. His questions;are juvenile,and lack subtlety and intuition.

Well, I have been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers since I was a kid. And they were kids. Never ever gets old. I'd love to see a movie of their careers made. From early days in Gainsville to now.
have you seen running down a dream? Its a four hour documentary on the band, its great.
Like at 21:54:
Jian: Well, you're famous.
Tom Petty: Am I?
Jian: Aren't you?
I mean, come on. What a silly response from Jian.
I do, however, appreciate (like coolkayaker1 pointed out) Jian's ability to, at times, let the interviewee think and his/her stream of consciousness come to mind.
coolkayaker1 so perceptive, so subtle, even a 7 year old could do the same thing. yea, ur right that's some real skill there coolkayaker1.
Sure, it's a skill, jimreid5, in this day and age where the interviewer is louder and gets more lines than the the guest.
I find that Jian lives the famous line of Mark Twain: "It's better to remain silent and seem a fool than to speak and leave no doubt." lol
But, I do respect your thoughts. It is sad to see Jian in court, weather wrongly or rightly, and not behind a mic.
coolkayaker1 ya I guess its a skill after all.
He sucks 😂 Tom should have just spoken on his own. He ruined the depth of the conversation for me.
“American Dream Plan B “I think is an excellent rock-roll of inspiration . ♥️
his voice was the main thing...to me his songs are written around his unique vocal ability of hitting extremely high notes in an unusual and pleasing-sounding way that doesnt seem high unless you try it yourself.
R.I.P. Tom.
I thank God everyday I forced my hubby to stay 1 day past Memphis In May to see Petty in concert. May God test/bless his soul. 🙏🏻
Lordie.......I've only made it 5 mins into the interview, and I'm like, YES, what Tom said.
i guess im not the only songwriter who thinks up lyrics this way. Hes a true inspiration to me
He makes me feel with his music.
OMGWTFLOL soo true.
heaps of ums.two within the first two minutes.
Uhhhh what about this 1:47
@@nickelmickel4170 I watched a video of mike wallace and rod serling where someone made a similar comment, bunch of likes and comments agreeing with the OP. Went to a random point in the interview and it was the same deal. Full of uhs and you knows. People were criticizing me for pointing it out. Later went to another random point in the video, same thing. Sigh.
FIrst saw Tom on TV in late 70's play I need to Know. Been a fan ever since. Big fan. Rest in peace Tom.
Miss you, Tom. Honored to have seen your last show at the Gorge in 2010. Was 20, and still remember how powerful it felt to hear like 25,000 people singing “free falling”
We were lucky to have you in these eras,Tom. Thankyou for the interviews,to show us,this humane genious.❤️🇨🇦
Tom Petty is one of the very few people that can bring me to tears from his music. Some of the most beautiful songs ever made
Love you Tom! So happy I got the chance to see you and the Heartbreakers live - what a show!!!
Love you Tom, I was so grateful to see you and the Heartbreakers live and it was one of my favorite shows of all time. the 40th anniversary tour. Amazing.
A creative force. Such a humble and honest man. Rest in peace.
What a great interview. A true artist, not just a 'band'. No other bands now a days have this gift that Tom along (including) with the Heartbreakers had...There was a gift in this combination of musicians truly!! A very true connection to each other's strength...they were all Heartbreakers!!!
I love Tom Petty now. My daughters always love him and want to his concerts. He was awesome!! RIP Tom
Tom Pettt was a great songwriter/musician with a wonderful sense of humour and intellect.
Alice Cooper adored him too. I used to listen to Alice's radio program nightly on one of our Aussie radio channels. He always played at 3 Tom Petty songs nightly. Always praised him.
What a humble, wonderful man.
RIP Tom Petty! Truly one of the best
RIP...
he was a legend hate that heart attacks can take someone away from us just like that RIP
I use to cruise in my astro van and
Petty is EXACTLY right, people can’t play anymore.
So glad we have all his music and these interviews. RIP TP.
What a great, insightful interview. TP is truly one of R&R's grand statesmen. I only wish I could be half as cool as Tom.
What a well spoken gentle man. I will always love Tom Petty.
