In coding, we have what we call "script kiddies". They take bits and pieces of pre-written code, put them together, maybe tweak them a little bit by changing a line here or there and call it good. I'm a "script kiddie" of mechanics, if that, whereas this guy is a mechanical guru. Whereas I can just try to memorise where everything came from and try to figure out afterwards how to put it back, he could build the whole thing from scratch.

@@Oberon4278 vw’s need way more expertise than any American car to repair the transmission. You might have a hard time finding a good specialist to do it. I took my Jetta to 3 places that said they can’t fix it. Finally Aamco said they could do it. It took them 3 tries to get it right. Each time they had to rebuild it, under warranty btw. It cost $4k the first time. That was a few years ago. I recently changed the trans oil myself and discovered Aamco didn’t use vw brand oil. I got it from the dealer and not it runs like new.

G.M. knows DAMN well where the issues are. For them, it's all a fine balance between cost, and acceptable failure rates. If they can save a nickle per vehicle, at a customers ultimate expense, but it will still fall within acceptable failure rates, you can darn well bet they will choose the nickle over the customer 100% of the time. The aftermarket update kits work the other way.

I was a gearhead in my youth, but never took apart an automatic transmission. That you can do it so efficiently, not need to carefully lay out the parts to go back because you just know where they go (so easy to leave something out), and can reach back in your memory for the history of parts and designs, this is the voice of experience. I salute you, sir.
