It's important to say what will be getting for your quote, and don't get carried away with the small talk cause that's how shysters work to bluff you into giving them the job. Get tough and say why should I give you the job, let them answer and then say thanks I will think it over and get back to you. When you give faith in men blindly you will get screwed
I can disasseble certain engine models in less than 15 minutes, drop an entire engine from a car in less than 30 minutes , harness intack, why? And i a mechanic genius, no, just years if experience
These are the mechanics I want to attach tracking devices to. Them and folks who know how to cut my hair. They aren't allowed to leave town without notifying me, and if I move they have to move with me.

Our Transmission man out in San Bernardino, Ca...him and his two other brothers have been building transmissions since they were teenagers. They each run their own shops and there is no such thing as “Slow” at their shops. No advertising and just word of mouth keeps them from having vacations and keeping to only one day off. Sunday. You want quality work and a man that backs up his work. He is the man.

The vast majority of tech are hazardous to engines and parts. The whole industry is set in a way that the money goes to the wrong people and there are no mechanics well trained and well paid anymore except people like him who are the owner and the builder in one person.

That was my experience also Jeffrey. I built engines all the time the customer had already paid big bucks to have built at other shops. Brake jobs customers had paid for new rotors, calipers, only to find one or two pads changed. I don't have to explain you've seen it. I would say you've seen it all but I found that not so. Just when I thought I'd seen it all only to be blown away. The car business is full of crooks
@@BB-rn6so It's awful up here in Seattle. Every shop I've dealt with is full of thieves, even the tire shop franchises. Took my car in for brake pads once, they came back and told me I had to replace the rotors and calipers too, at $1400. I went home and changed the pads myself, and measured the rotors while I was down there. They were WAY within tolerances, and there was absolutely nothing wrong with the calipers. A different shop once told me that $900 each for tires on my 2010 Sonata was a totally normal price and I shouldn't bother shopping around.

Man it's hard to watch a reveal of a customer getting dicked by a shop. As a person who doesn't know anything about vehicles, I appreciate your honesty with your customers. Plus, you can tell by how fast and thorough you are that you have been doing this for a long time and it's nice to see someone actually know their stuff.

Much respect to to for taking on that challenge, when I ran my own workshop I always encouraged my customers to learn to do their own mechanics. Some people couldn't understand why a workshop owner would do that but I liked teaching and encouraging my customers to know more about their motorcycles and how they worked.

I had to laugh after you guys mentioned multiple times I hope this isn’t broken. Other shops are just rubbing their hands together for more money to charge the customer. When you are honest and do a good job reputation keeps you in business and you don’t have to make all the money on one job. I can’t wait for the build videos. Thanks guys.
What’s sad is; some shops will show you parts from another transmission that’s destroyed and say it’s from yours and charge you the customer like it was from your trans. I’ve worked for several places and have caught a couple doing that. I didn’t stick around there long after finding that out.
Not defending the " other shop " as they seem to be a repeat offenders,, but in my 40 years of professional wrenching, if anybody can find a weak / defective product / part - it'll be a farmer. Many years ago an older farmer told me " you ain't working hard enough if ya ain't breaking something " 🤔
That's partly true, I grew up around farming and I found that most of the farmers I work with use there trucks as trucks and don't try to kill them pulling too heavy.
When I worked for an auto shop years ago, there was always the suspicion that "another shop screwed it up" was code for "I tried to fix it and f'd it up". More than once, through talking to the person about what really happened, we were able to find out that the customer was trying to cover for their own shortcomings.
Well more than once I’ve buttoned things back up and took the car to a shop. I break the ice with, “I need two quotes, how much and how much if I worked on it first.”
I dont know why people lie. If I fuck it up Ill be honest with the shop. Look I thought I could do X but I dont have the right tools or I did Y and it blew up. Just charge me what you need to.

In many cases, I’d agree. But considering he’s pulling mutilated factory stock parts out of a “built” transmission, I think this is beyond customer intervention other than he bet on the wrong horse... twice.

I feel proud when I change the plugs on my V8 but this guy just disassembled 200 pieces in half hour explaining each one and did this flawlessly. Incredible and amazing. Plus the guy recording knew his stuff as well. First transmission disassemble video Ive seen and I’m glad it was this one.
i too am a mechanic, i don't build transmissions but i take pride in my work and i stand by it and i always want to have guaranteed work going out the door. its always great to see fellow mechanic brothers putting good work out there for people. its so rare now days, everyone just wants to take your money and run
The internal part of that case that was shifted around inside under those locking tabs you need something to grab it and shift it around so it part of that internals are not under the Locking tabs so you can pull that out like having a chassis that will hold a motor while you work on it you need a chassis that will hold your transmission case while you work on it as well
Chevy 350 has less than 150 parts. The turbo 350 transmission or 400 found attached to it has over 300 parts, most of which are tiny little metal rings.
I am NOT mechanically inclined and 99% of everything that he was talking about went right over my head. That said, he's obviously extremely knowledgeable when it comes to his craft, and It's a breath of fresh air to see an honest business man helping out people who got screwed.
I've worked as a machine builder/restorer and we relied on taking very many photos of the strip down phase. This is on a completely different level, much respect.

The expense of having a major repair done and it not being done properly can be very devastating to the average person. Having qualified conscience technicians who will do it right is worth their weight in gold.
$500 comes close to covering the R&R at a reputable shop. Guessing the “rebuild” is a pressure washer, silver rattle can paint, and a pint of Lucas tranny syrup down the dipstick.
Ok straight up, it takes balls to have the courage to call out other shops in you’re own town. But when bad things are being done, it’s good to know that there are some who will speak up.

@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Better, if the manufacturer did their job. With TBW the computer can automatically match the next gear without your input. Turns gearjammers into slick shifters without torching synchro cones. It's too bad a lot of them figured this out right as they killed their manual options. But on the other hand, it can be a LOT harder to make a livable manual transmission that will survive under modern power levels, than it is an automatic.
@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 I have an 03 honda accord 5 speed that has a drive by wire throttle. It feels just like any other manual although I've driven a lot of newer 5 and 6 speed cars with manuals and they feel kind of delayed and weird with the DBW throttle.
As someone whose been burned by transmission shops (multiple times) this is so refreshing to see a shop that knows their craft thoroughly and wants the customer to be satisfied with what they pay for. As a side note, it's more common than you think (unfortunately) for automotive shops to not do the work they told you they did but still charge you for it.

That trans looks touched, bellhousing bolts loose, reverse drum sanded, the 3rd shift accumuator had 2 pistons, the steels looks sanded, this transmission clearly was touched

Last experience with a transmission shop was with AAMCCO Transmission shop here in Sarasota Florida. On a 2009 Chevy Malibu They charged me $900 just to inspect it. Which the question was. "Will you give us permission to take it apart and inspect it"? Never mentioned the charge. Came back saying it was the 3rd and 4th gears slipping. He wanted to charge me 3k to fix it. I ended up paying the $900. After some youtube videos I figured out it was the solenoids. The part is about $200. The dishonesty is brutal out there. Glad to see mechanics like yourself make an honest living.

I had to laugh after you guys mentioned multiple times I hope this isn’t broken. Other shops are just rubbing their hands together for more money to charge the customer. When you are honest and do a good job reputation keeps you in business and you don’t have to make all the money on one job. I can’t wait for the build videos. Thanks guys.
What’s sad is; some shops will show you parts from another transmission that’s destroyed and say it’s from yours and charge you the customer like it was from your trans. I’ve worked for several places and have caught a couple doing that. I didn’t stick around there long after finding that out.
Not defending the " other shop " as they seem to be a repeat offenders,, but in my 40 years of professional wrenching, if anybody can find a weak / defective product / part - it'll be a farmer.

Yep. Farmers will use what they have to do a task, too often it's something never designed for the task.
That's partly true, I grew up around farming and I found that most of the farmers I work with use there trucks as trucks and don't try to kill them pulling too heavy.
A 4L60e can handle a stock engine for 140k miles without changing the fluid and filter.

When I worked for an auto shop years ago, there was always the suspicion that "another shop screwed it up" was code for "I tried to fix it and f'd it up".
More than once, through talking to the person about what really happened, we were able to find out that the customer was trying to cover for their own shortcomings.
Well more than once I’ve buttoned things back up and took the car to a shop. I break the ice with, “I need two quotes, how much and how much if I worked on it first.”
I dont know why people lie. If I fuck it up Ill be honest with the shop. Look I thought I could do X but I dont have the right tools or I did Y and it blew up. Just charge me what you need to.
@@nate6386 Honestly honesty pays, i work at a computer store and when a customer admits they fucked up trying to fix it themselves i admire them for their willingness to try and subsequently admit when it didn't go well, besides we all start somewhere.
In many cases, I’d agree. But considering he’s pulling mutilated factory stock parts out of a “built” transmission, I think this is beyond customer intervention other than he bet on the wrong horse... twice.

This is precisely why I want to drive from WI to TX to have my transmission rebuilt.
I don't need any transmission repair and I want to have him look at mine. I live in California.
I feel proud when I change the plugs on my V8 but this guy just disassembled 200 pieces in half hour explaining each one and did this flawlessly. Incredible and amazing. Plus the guy recording knew his stuff as well. First transmission disassemble video Ive seen and I’m glad it was this one.

i too am a mechanic, i don't build transmissions but i take pride in my work and i stand by it and i always want to have guaranteed work going out the door. its always great to see fellow mechanic brothers putting good work out there for people. its so rare now days, everyone just wants to take your money and run
The internal part of that case that was shifted around inside under those locking tabs you need something to grab it and shift it around so it part of that internals are not under the Locking tabs so you can pull that out like having a chassis that will hold a motor while you work on it you need a chassis that will hold your transmission case while you work on it as well
Just do a time laps build to start with. Stick a Go Pro up over the bench and just go at it.
My jaw just dropped watching that transmission get pulled apart.
Chevy 350 has less than 150 parts. The turbo 350 transmission or 400 found attached to it has over 300 parts, most of which are tiny little metal rings.

I am NOT mechanically inclined and 99% of everything that he was talking about went right over my head. That said, he's obviously extremely knowledgeable when it comes to his craft, and It's a breath of fresh air to see an honest business man helping out people who got screwed.
I've worked as a machine builder/restorer and we relied on taking very many photos of the strip down phase. This is on a completely different level, much respect.

The expense of having a major repair done and it not being done properly can be very devastating to the average person. Having qualified conscience technicians who will do it right is worth their weight in gold.

In Phoenix ,AZ you can get those 4l60e rebuilt for $500.00 with the converter included. The one you had on your bench must be one of them! lol
$500 comes close to covering the R&R at a reputable shop.
Guessing the “rebuild” is a pressure washer, silver rattle can paint, and a pint of Lucas tranny syrup down the dipstick.
I paid $700 for one. 99 suburban that I got for free - wish me luck lol

@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Better, if the manufacturer did their job. With TBW the computer can automatically match the next gear without your input. Turns gearjammers into slick shifters without torching synchro cones.
It's too bad a lot of them figured this out right as they killed their manual options. But on the other hand, it can be a LOT harder to make a livable manual transmission that will survive under modern power levels, than it is an automatic.
@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 I have an 03 honda accord 5 speed that has a drive by wire throttle. It feels just like any other manual although I've driven a lot of newer 5 and 6 speed cars with manuals and they feel kind of delayed and weird with the DBW throttle.
@@MegaDysart Interesting, my feeling is wire is likely to sacrifice feel/response in favor of emissions.
As someone whose been burned by transmission shops (multiple times) this is so refreshing to see a shop that knows their craft thoroughly and wants the customer to be satisfied with what they pay for.
As a side note, it's more common than you think (unfortunately) for automotive shops to not do the work they told you they did but still charge you for it.

When a builder states that the transmission is [built].... He is referring that most parts are included and the bolts are tight.

I have no idea how or why TH-cam brought me here, but here I am! I'm 16 minutes deep on watching someone tear down a transmission for ZERO reason. I may even subscribe. Lol! Did anything look replaced ever in that transmission it almost looks totally like it has never been touched before
That trans looks touched, bellhousing bolts loose, reverse drum sanded, the 3rd shift accumuator had 2 pistons, the steels looks sanded, this transmission clearly was touched
@@carlitosgy6 Yes on that stuff but most of the other stuff looks original or likely be they just put a clutch pack or two in it. Pretty shady deal the shop is as we’ve seen from other videos
Now thats a master Mechanic , someone that has the skill and the knowledge to do a work that only a few people can do with such pride and precision .

Did they even do anything in this transmission? It looked completely stock.
Possibly just replaced a bunch of (worn) stuff with stock GM parts without taking intended usage into consideration.
Junkyard unit maybe?
the other shop likely just threw some used parts in it and called it a day.
Maybe they swapped in a junkyard transmission and charged for a rebuild.
Probably just replaced what was broken leaving the worn but usable parts in place.
I know nothing about transmissions, but you sir are awesome. Honest, and thurough, you can't ask for anything more.
Last experience with a transmission shop was with AAMCCO Transmission shop here in Sarasota Florida. On a 2009 Chevy Malibu They charged me $900 just to inspect it. Which the question was. "Will you give us permission to take it apart and inspect it"? Never mentioned the charge. Came back saying it was the 3rd and 4th gears slipping. He wanted to charge me 3k to fix it. I ended up paying the $900. After some youtube videos I figured out it was the solenoids. The part is about $200. The dishonesty is brutal out there. Glad to see mechanics like yourself make an honest living.
