Do they now make any higher quality, 3rd party collars- preferably aluminum- Arca compatible? I only saw one for the 75mm lens. What lights do you recommend and will TTL work with Nikon- no body to lens connectivity at all- fully manual. Not sure if aperture needs handshake with the lens or vice versa.
Good review. I will probably buy the 100mm tomorrow and a collar- maybe this one. If I get this one, I will very simply glue a thin strip of rubber to the inside of the collar 360 to avoid scratching. I would also use some tiny black or clear adhesive tabs to act as stops fore and aft the collar to help it resist sliding. I will also make a thin adhesive label and print the values on it and stick it to the now customized collar. That'll get 'er done. Or spend $1,500 on a lens that doesn't require all that. This is a great lens for the price optically but clearly not refined. Really needs to be a sealed lens and better focus ring- longer and more accurate throw. APO for $4xx and 2x mag. is pretty good- even without all the electronics.
There are a number of collars out there! I have two metal ones I use on my long RZ lenses. To avoid slippage I use adhesive backed foam lining the inside of the collar. I also have a metal Canon collar I use on my Nikon 2x extender.
I've never used the tripod collar that came with the MPE65mm and even if the Laowa 100mm tripod collar is an afterthought wouldn't bother me. The fact that you like this lens makes me want to give it a try. On the other hand, I don't want to accumulate too much photo equipment. My goal is to keep it as simple as I can for the kind of macro photography that I do. Thanks for sharing your insights!
Well I have to say that not having a lot of equipment is NOT John’s goal! LOL! I often tell him he needs to sell something he is not using before we get something new! LOL!
FYI : If you use the tripod collar on the "R Mount" version of the lens, the tripod mount is to large to make it fit right by the mount connector (this part is narrower than the EF versions ?)... the only option is to set it up on the aperture markings (too far from the body, in my opinion)... I guess I will try to handle it without a collar... or use some kind of foam buffer...

may i know the tripod collar diameter? and lens diameter of the mounting of the collar?

Thanks for posting this, I was really frustrated trying to figure it out lol.
Great! Glad it was helpful
the collar might work well for a small dog

My main problem was to see what aperture you're about when you're using it. It should be twice slimmer and made of aluminium.
Simple fix. Print a sticker/label strip and type the numbers on it. Done. It goes on the collar.
This is very helpful.
Glad you like it!

Ya it is not great positioning. That is why we decided it might have been an after thought!
Wow I absolutely love this lens but the collar is actually kind of insulting. Total afterthought
Ya we feel the same way.
thanks guys! reckon I won't be getting this one!
Ya it’s not that useful but the lens is great and easier than the MPE 65.
