    Something to keep in mind - the 100mm canon version, which can be adapted to sony E, has electronic aperture coupling. This means that even when using F11, you can focus at F2.8 and the lens will only close down when taking the shot if desired, making focussing much easier at super close macro distances.

    Hi Micael - An excellent video, and I've seen you develop as a macro photographer, and I really like the way you've settled on this simplified approach, and are giving such excellent advice. I've spent lots of time working on light modification, and actually invented the concept of "concave diffusers" now used all around the world. Although truth be told I now tend to often use quite simple light modifiers and lightweight flashes. The cheap commercial diffuser you are using does give excellent lighting and I first used one a long time back. One advantage of the 60mm over the 100mm is the closer working distance does tend to give better lighting from the flash, as the closer the diffuser is to the subject, the more diffuse the light. I've not used either Laowa lens yet, as I still use DSLRs. I agree with you about the Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x macro, which I've been using for about 12 years now. It's a great lens, but it's very limiting when you come across a butterfly or dragonfly, and have to either change lenses, carry to set ups (which I have) or just miss the opportunity. So a lot of the time now I use the Canon 60mm f2.8 USM with an extension tube.

      Yeah it is fun to experiment with different solutions for light and diffusion, but this simple setup is the one that has given me the best results and most convenient photo walks yet :)

    • @stephenbarlow2493
      @stephenbarlow2493 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MicaelWidell - Yes, after lots of experience I've come to the same conclusion, simple is best. I've always done photo walks, and you never know what you're going to encounter. So a flash set up as to be simple, versatile i.e. at various distances and magnifications, and give reliable light.

    • @MicaelWidell

      Macro ring flashes never gave me good results, probably because the flash is too close to the subject, making it hard to diffuse in a proper way. The images just don’t look beautiful. The light looks too industrial and harsh. Also a ring flash is clumsy and makes the camera front heavy. And expensive.

      They are pretty similar. I would say the Laowa is perhaps slightly better built - no oil leakage and the aperture scale is correct. But in terms of what you get for the money, the Pergear is better value, at least if you get the mk2 version. The Laowa also has distorsion - none of them are great for scanning negatives.

    Hi Micael, I love your website, impressive and inspiring. I've just ordered the 60mm Laowa. I think you say it's designed for APS-C cameras (I have a Canon APS-C, the 760D) but another TH-camr says then it has a 3x magnification (I guess more accurately 2 x 1.6 = 3.2?) Is this correct? So is the answer simply to multiply the magnification on the barrel by 1.6 if using an APS-C camera? Thanks.

    • @MicaelWidell
      @MicaelWidell  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is made for APS-C but works well on full frame for macro. It has 2x magnification. But sure, 2x on aps-c is similar to 3x on full frame, when it comes to image framing (pretty logical when you think about it - when you crop in on a photo, as a crop sensor does, you get a larger subject in the frame)
