No one wanted Jazzmasters or Jaguars in the '70s, so used ones from the '60s were cheap. That's why the alternative musicians wound up with them - they were the cheapest decent guitars you could find.

The current equivalent is 90s shred guitars and early 2000s semi-hollow guitars from china/korea.
Altho why bother when the j mascis squier is still around. Just get that one.

Adrian. I fell in love with the Jazzmaster after I learned Johnn yB good from your video last year and saw yours. My wife just bought me a Fender Jazz Prof II and I can't put it down. Surf Green. Coincidently, I picked up a used VOX amp last month and then noticed you have one too. This is the first higher end guitar I've ever owned. My first and only guitar was from when I was 14 in 1978. An El Degas Strat. It still hangs on my wall. I picked up a Squire Mustang last year when I renewed my passion for guitar after a 40 year hiatus. Working my way through all of your videos since I love many of the bands you do too. Recently I share my time between your channel and learning surf songs from the classic surf bands. You are a great teacher as many of your subscribers seem to also agree. Rock on!

Great video! Would love to see a "Start Chopping" tutorial too. :)
I currently own a Squier J. Mascis Jazzmaster, and that guitar is incredible, especially for the price. 10 years ago I owned one of the cheaper Mexican Fender Jazzmasters available on the market then (still more expensive than the Squier Mascis), and I much prefer the Mascis -- both sounds and feels a lot better, and it comes with a Mustang style bridge installed so none of the typical bridge problems. I would recommend that guitar wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to get into the world of offset guitars.

Adrian is just simple the BEST guitar instructor on all of youtube. I'm a Patron, and I want to suggest that if you like his videos and get as much out of them as I do then you should consider being one too, even if it's just 5 or 10 dollars a month (I do 25, which is about half of what one lesson would cost).

The first thing that planted the seed of my desire for the Jazzmaster was seeing The Cure “Play For Today” video in 1982. I think the Jazzmaster is absolutely gorgeous, and sounds beautiful clean, particularly with both pickups active. For buyers wanting to get their feet wet without jumping all the way in, the Squier Classic Vibe version is a real bargain. The next step up is the Fender Vintera version, which, I believe, is the only one with matching headstock…

I really like using my rhythm circuit with a germanium fuzz: set the top circuit for a volume cut to clean the fuzz up, then switch to the full circuit to melt faces.

Nice to see somebody demoing a Jazzmaster. I’ve got a Japanese one, not as nice as yours, no binding one the neck and the pickups are not so authentic sounding but still a very playable guitar, (and it does have a painted headstock that matches the surf green body which looks cool). I’ve not had any problems with the bridge but I did put clear nail varnish on all the screw threads after setting it up.

Strong video on the Jazzmaster. Well done.
The ‘rhythm switch’ is indeed going through a differently voiced circuit. It is darker.
I like to use the rhythm circuit with an Ebow. I can preset the volume down quite a bit as Ebows imbue a lot of energy into the strings.
A Jazzmaster vibrato and the lock do take some extra work to get setup correctly but once done, the setup is solid. The vibtaro is quite different to a Strat and both have their places.

For anyone struggling with the Jazzmaster and Jaguar bridges: i would recommend to watch the Puisheen channel. Your sinking bridge could probably be fixed with loctite in the screws. He also recommends to put a sim on the neck and use at least 11 strings on it. I like your channel, it's always nice to watch and listen your stuff. Even more when you play offset guitars. ;) Cheers!

The first person I saw using a Jazzmaster who wasn't some surf player from the 60's was Tom Verlaine in Television.....and he's still the best Jazzmaster player in my opinion.
One of the guitarists in the close harmony pop group "the Association" used one back in the 60's and I'm pretty sure I've seen Jazz virtuoso, Joe Pass using one, although that was a brief dalliance. There is a very film of early Hendrix using one when he was in a backing band .....upside down naturally!

    • @profd65
      @profd65 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The Jaguar is probably a little easier to play: it has a shorter scale length, which means the strings are slacker. The Jaguar's tone is darker than the Jazzmaster. That's about all I know. Both guitars are the darlings of Indie/college radio bands, and anathema to heavy metalers.

"Clean sound" means guitar and amp without anything but the cable in between. You don´t get to hear this guitar´s own unique, delicious voice through a chorus pedal. By the way, the statement about the Jazzmaster having been originally intended to be used with 011 gauge flatwounds (or heavier) is true. That´s what I do, no bridge problems at all.

Always enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them Adrian. A timely one for me as I'm already about to buy one. I'm surprised you omitted any comment on the unique whammy unit this guitar uses. Different design to the Stratocaster this one is much more controllable and easier to get smooth and precise tremolo playing. Also it has a locking switch on the unit to lock the string tension should you break a string during a performance.

I think this guitar passed through a lot of different music styles all over these years since the early 60's with jazz and blues my favourites... and then fell into the alternative rock, pop and indie sound which it's not so warm and rich in terms of technical rhythm and solos but rather more artistic and innovative with pedal effects... Nice video. Noel Gallagher recently brought to my attention that aged Nash Jazzmasters are the coolest looking guitars ever. Those guitars just look right for him. Also Taylor Swift makes good sounds with a jaguar at the Grammy museum performance. To me, offset guitars seem like the 'Singer-songwriter' instrument. I am not sure why. Now, I had noticed offset guitars before these, from either Elvis Costello or Johnny Marr, but there's something about the aged non-shiny jazzmaster and jags that look better.

I'm lucky enough to own a vintage 1966 Jazzy and it's got the best feeling neck of any of my guitars. I think it's true that the fretboards from that era varied considerably in radius. Mine is very close to a modern 9" radius but feels even a little flatter than that when I'm playing. Not sure why - maybe the binding has something to do with that. I'm surprised that Fender offered neck binding so rarely. It really sets the neck off and makes it so smooth to play. My only issue has been with the location of the PU selector switch. I hit it a lot and may eventually damage it. I'm considering a replacement so I can archive the original and include it with the guitar if I ever had to sell it.

That sounds lovely, I thought my Gretsch Streamliner sounded good but love the 'jangly' sound!!

I always wanted a Jag because MBV had them, but now I prefer the JM, but being left handed they were so rare and expensive! When are you doing a lesson of some Fall tunes?

    Very nice,
You used to have two more guitars at least - A black Les Paul with Bigsby and a purple (?) Vox - what about them ?
also - you have acoustic guitars....

Marty Wilson-Piper from The Church uses one as his main guitar (he is brilliant). Please do a lesson by The Church! Unguarded Moment maybe??
