    What are some of your favourite alternative beginner songs that fulfil some or all of my criteria? Let me know and I'll create a full list on the beginner's section of my site.

      Friday I'm in Love - The Cure. Nice single note line which is just played on a D chord and easy but interesting strum pattern. There is a Bm in there which is a barre chord obviously, but can be fluffed and just played as an upper triad.

      One of the first songs I learnt was ‘Dark entries’ by Bauhaus. Super simple riff and sounds great!

      I couple I liked when starting out were "Animal Instinct" by the Cranberries and "Find the river" by REM. They have some Cadd9 and Dsus chords but I think that still counts as beginner friendly. Maybe only small-a "alternative" though :)

    • @acpg
      @acpg  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, good songs. Pretty sure that they could qualify as alternative!

    Note to the beginners:
    Don’t learn the “common beginner songs” only learn songs you like
    It’ll help a lot:)

    • @tunod-
      @tunod- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      That's funny because most of the things I want to learn are way out of my reach. It's always either the intro or the riff that makes you think oh okay I can do this but then the verse and bridge drops and youre dead.

    • @standardofexcellence
      @standardofexcellence 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thats what I've always done i fucking hate stereotypical song books, music is about expression and creativity so what purpose does it serve to us doing the same shit as everyone else. I taught myself

    • @falcodarkzz
      @falcodarkzz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I learnt wonderwall, a song i hate, but really did learn some sweet strumming patterns learning it. I don’t think it’s always true to just learn what you want :)

    • @xXPuReXPaNcaKesXx
      @xXPuReXPaNcaKesXx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find this true. Learn the songs you like because you’ll know them. You’ll be able to express yourself through your interpretation. Once you’re confident enough you’ll surprise yourself as to how fast you can pick up “common beginner songs”

    • @deaddoll1361
      @deaddoll1361 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@falcodarkzz I think the rational is if you really like a song, you'll practice it to death, whereas learning one you dislike is hard work, regardless of how "good it'll be for you". Keep in mind that the majority of people who start learning an instrument give up fairly quickly.

A completely cool and non-boring selection with clear and knowledgeable presentation and no BS. Thanks so much, awesome stuff. Some Brian Jonestown Massacre would be the icing on the cake!

    The songs I’d say that are great beginner songs and which I learned was
    1. Californication by red hot chilli peppers (without the crazy barrechord stuff)
    2. Hurt by Johnny cash
    3. Nothing else matters by Metallica
    4. Fake plastic trees by Radiohead
    5. boulevard of broken dreams by green day
    6. Whole lotta love by led zeppelin
    8. Nutshell by Alice in chains
    9. Rooster by Alice in chains (one of the best songs to practice barre chords)
    10. Lose yourself by Eminem
    11. In bloom by nirvana
    12. Come as you are by nirvana
    13. Civil war by guns n’ roses (great for learning alternate picking)
    14. Killing in the name of by rage against the machine
    15. Chop suey! By system of a down.
    I hope I could’ve helped a beginner out there, Keep being epic my dudes.

    Most of the comments are from 3 and 4 years ago, saw one from 1 year ago, so hopefully this comment gets through.
    Thank you for the video, I am definitely a beginner even though I bought my first guitar more than 30 years ago. I took a couple of lessons, really only learned what you just showed here, power chords. Then I practiced lead on my own for a few months, and unfortunately, life happened and I never kept up with playing.
    So, after all of these years, I'm ready to start playing again. I feel this video will definitely help me get going, as it shows three or four chords, and the strumming used as you move between them. I am mainly looking to get good at rhythm first, really learn the chord shapes and moving between them.

    Excellent list! I’m a total beginner and have been working though “Human Fly” and “Rumble” which happen to be some my of my all time favorites regardless of their beginner status. Now I’m very inspired to learn “I wanna be your dog”. On another note, I would love I eventually see a tutorial for “Head On” by Jesus and Mary Chain. Can’t seem to find a good lesson for that one on TH-cam and it sounds very fun to play (once I develop a little more dexterity with beginner songs). That's a great, easy to play and easy to learn beginner's list. We can get into the nuances of different ways to play chords (barred), major 6s, minors, 7ths and sus's later. For a beginner, with a few simple chords - it's just the way it is (i.e. don't worry about why, it's just the way it is. We can get into the why later).

      I dont know why everyone says the F chord is so hard. I needed it in one of the first few songs that I wanted to learn so I just learned it. I always play it Barre though because "baby" F is a pain, and doesn't sound as good.

    • @61cheezil
      @61cheezil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yep I can't even play F after 3 or 4 months trying to learn guitar..

      @@scottcalloway4630 what do you mean by "play it Barre tho" ? What is that?

    • @d-ro3266
      @d-ro3266 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Merrilyn Tattersall a barre chord is when your index finger holds down every string on a fret, is if it were a capo. So on an F, your index finger holds down all the strings on the first fret.

    I completely agree with your list. I wanna be your dog was one of the first riffs I learnt and still enjoy playing it to this day. I’m also glad to see some Jesus and Mary Chain on the list; whenever I hear Just Like Honey it makes me think of the end scene from Lost in Translation.
    Great video as usual 👍

    You should listen an indie band from Argentina, it's called "El mato a un policía motorizado" and the song is "Amigo piedra", really great and easy song.

    lovely lesson.
    i am nearing the end of my fretboard follies after 40 years of noodles.
    never had a face to face lesson, and in the 80s pre t'internet it was learn by ear, dodgy mail order cassette tapes and hand written tab (jack wilcox hee) from nme.
    my best wins over the years were just winging it & trying something made up using my limited theory.
    when the wem copycat kicked in it was like..woah...what was that!
    the online access to learning is staggering these days. (you are such a great teacher & player..& i recommend you to the g. curious) .
    i do like blues, rock, punk, & rock n roll but the web is drenched with play like "insert name"
    endless photo fit pentatoic blues by numbers.
    i dunno, my advice to the young uns would be,learn the basics and then spread your wings.
    refreshing to see this mate.
    the eels! thats how to write a blues song that dont need a solo.
    nice one.

    A word of appreciation for your treatment of Walk on the Wild Side. All of the other video lessons play it in C, which, sure, that's the key the record's in. But Lou Reed plays it D-G pretty much everywhere else (at least from the 80s on) -- and it's definitely better that way.
