Gene - You are hands down amongst the very best educators in bass fishing and I've learned alot from you even as I've just recently retired. Having discovered this video just last year I had to smile because this has been my mainstay rig for over 30 years. This video you made is timeless , as I can't for see this rigging method ever letting up. If you'd allow me I'd like to supplement your wisdom with some of what I have found works with variations of this rig. After trial & error I settled down to using 1/4 oz. mojo style weight under all conditions, from 5 ft. out to 15+ feet, and never felt that the bass were put off by the heavier weight. For me 2 baits covered all situations - a zoom centipede with a 1/0 or 2/0 EWG hook and a zoom brush hog with a 3/0 hook. I always used 8# or 10# line, but finally have gotten into braid and now go 15# braid to the 8 or 10# FC leader. I find a long, medium power spinning rod (7'3" to 7'6") helps with longer casts, the ability play the fish more on the rod, and in working the bait the longer rod enables a longer drag before having to pickup the line. I use this rig all seasons of the year including the spawn, and find that the mojo cylinder shaped weight comes through rocky and gravel areas better than any other weight system I've found when "dragging". On hard botton, on a tough bite, I'll bounce the weight up and down a couple times and pause - its gotten me many additional fish over the years. It does shine in vegetation, but regardless my best retrieve has been inch, crawl it, shake it in place , always with short to medium pauses in between - nothing too fast. It catches more than its share of big fish as Gene so timely demonstrated. Great for beginners to begin catching bass and gaining confidence, and great for old dogs like me who have embraced it as my confidence bait for clost to 30 years! Gene - thanx for the opportunity to use your forum to give back a little. I know we all got to pay the bills, but what you are giving to so many eager and hungry fisherman and the women too can not be overlooked. You are a pleasure to learn from and clearly a great guy!

Was having a terrible weekend. Rushed out to one of our reservoirs here in eastern MA with a few hours I had in the evening and I could not stop catching bass on the mojo on my first time using it. Best couple hours fishing I've ever had since I left the south. Thanks for showing this one off (five years ago, but still).
I have tested at least a dozen connecting knots for braid to flouro and the best by far is the miller knot. It's a slightly modified albright knot. Do a search for "Tackle Tour Video - Braid to Fluorocarbon knot connections" to find out how to tie it.
I have to agree with Nick, this channel really should be much bigger for the content we get. Gene, you live this stuff, and you sure do live pretty well.

I remember watching this video about a year ago and catching some bass using this technique on my next outing. Falling victim to the "next best thing" I forgot about this setup. Went back to it recently with good success. It works just the way Flukemaster demonstrates. Two small mods I use:1. I use small, 1/16, bullet weights and bobber stoppers to pin the weight. 2 stoppers. 1 in front of the weight and 1 between the weight and the hook. That way I can work it Mojo style, or pin the weight against the hook, or spread the stoppers and let the weight slide, Texas style.2. Instead of a worm I sometimes use a soft swim bait like a cane thumper. You can fish this rig from top to bottom and through the bushes. Makes a great search bait. Cuts down on the rigging and re rigging. Use the 4" version on a 2/0 EWG thin wire. Texpose the hook in the slot at the top, just a little, and you have a incredibly weedless set up.Thanks Flukemaster for the lesson.
This rig has won me the last three tournaments I have been in absolutely in love with it great for cold weather I recommended this rig to a couple of my friends and they have also had amazing results keep the content coming Gene!!!
Have you seen my new knot tying video? If not, be sure to watch it. It's more than likely how you are cinching down your knot. That's usually when the damage happens. If an improved albright is tied and tightened correctly it shouldn't break due to banging the guides on the cast. This is because the braided line protects the fluorocarbon leader.

A swim jig s a great idea. I haven't tried that yet. Don't be afraid to pull out a buzzbait or Rage Toad either. They have been putting plenty in the boat for me the last few weeks.
Flukemaster, watched your Mojo Rigging video last night & decided I would get the terminal tackle I was missing (cylinder weights) & fish it this evening on a lake which is part of the Chain O' Lakes in northern Illinois. Wow! We have had a good bit of rain & lightning this week but the largemouth bass just loved the setup. Using a 1/8 oz. cylinder weight pegged with a bobber stop about 10" from a Texas Rigged (with barb sharpened but skin hooked in bait) Gamagatsu size 1 Offset EWG with a Zoom Trick Worm (Watermelon Red Chartreuse tail) on a two piece St. Croix 7' Medium rod, Shimano Stradic CI4+ 2500 reel (smoothest reel I own) spooled with 12# Berkeley Nano-Fil (White as I am a line watcher) and 8# fluorocarbon. Can feel so much with this setup. Weeds and rocks were easy to detect. I do want to try Tungsten however as I notice even more feel transmitted through the braid & reel. Pickups were hard to detect and watching the line was a real benefit. I might try a second piece of colored fluorocarbon to see if this will help with strike detection. Was not excited about using such a small hook (thought 3/0 would be better) but the results were GREAT! The Zoom is a great bait due to its buoyant tail. Easy to fish some grass and Lilly pads without getting hung up...until bass hit it and get all tangled in it. Really appreciate your videos. Thank you. Wishing you a wonderful Father's Day. It is fished just like a Carolina Rig but it is more suited for fish grass because it rides on top of it instead dragging through it. You peg the weight so there isn't anything like a swivel or bead to pick up the grass.
I just saw this vid today and tried it this evening. Didn't have any mojo weights so I used a 1/16 bullet sinker pegged on both ends with slide on bobber stops. Didn't work with a finesse worm so I Texas rigged a Senko on it. Jezz, a fish almost every pitch in hydrilla and in the holes in lilly pads. Deep hooked almost every fish so I crushed the barb on the hook to make it easy to get out. Btw, this was on Toledo Bend, I am lucky enough to live on this great fishin hole.
That's pretty cool. I wish more people understood that bass fishing or fishing in general isn't a "cut and dry" thing. It's a world of impravising and making what you have work.... You are lucky. I am going to try to make a trip to Toledo Bend this time next year. I hope things work out so I can.

That's a good idea Alex and it would work just fine. In my experience it would take a long time for that little bit of friction to have a negative effect on your line. No matter what you are fishing you always need to retie every once in a while anyway. BTW I caught my PB on this rig using 8lb test fluorocarbon and she tore up about two pounds of grass while I was fighting her. She weighed in at 9.98lbs.

If you are fishing submerged grass you are usually fishing in clear water. So the bass may be line shy. The other reason is that it's difficult to keep a sinker pegged on braided line.
Great tips! Got a nice smallie switching to this rig. I did a little experimentation and used an un-pegged 1/8oz tungsten bullet weight with a stop knot 2ft from the lure. I think it worked in my favor having it this way; weight sat on the bottom while the fish pulled the line.

The mold I use to make the weights is called the "Lure Body Mold". The size I use the most is the 1/16th. If you buy the mold. Make sure you get a small pack of the S-040 Core Shaft to go with it. You will need them for making the hole in the weight.
man, came back to this video as I use a split shot rig a lot at one of the local ponds and am looking for a rig similar, and man you have 3 quality fish on this video.
It depends on the type of algae. If it that slimy stuff then you may pick up a little but it should still work better than most other things. Start with using a worm with a pointed head like a trick worm or finesse worm and see how that works.

Hey Gene, love your videos. I had seen on one you mentioned not being able to find tungsten cylindrical weights anymore (maybe the finesse chat?). Anyway, if you're still looking, Vike makes one, avail at TW. The only tip I would add is if bed fishing, pull the silicone strands from the bottom (hook side) of the sinker. If you use a white or chartreuse skirt strand, then don't trim it, it really helps as a visual marker when sight fishing. If the long strands are on the bottom strands it won't catch extra grass.
I really needed this today...fished a new lake today that was very grassy and was able to catch them on a texas rig but it was definitely hard and a lot of wasted time clearing the grass off my worm haha.

Great video. There's a small lake nearby with some deep grass, will be trying this technique. Will also be trying the reverse (mojo weight on bottom with hook up the line--drop shot) to see what the fish like more. Been having success there with heavy drop shot on 65# braid short leader hook to heavy weight, but I really like finesse styles. Really enjoy catching a big fish and carefully reeling it instead of just using power. Thanks for your quality videos, really helpful.
It's hard to answer that question because the bass don't read the rule book. They will do what they want to do according to conditions. My best advise is the method I used for 12 years of bank fishing. You need to fan cast at every spot. This will efficiently cover as much area as possible.
Awesome rig, thanks for sharing! I hit the lake once a week and I've been skunked for 2 weeks strait throwing my usual stuff. Hit the water today and decided to try this out. It did great! Although I used a medium baitcaster setup with 14lb mono( its my crankbait rod) and a 8lb fluorocarbon leader since i discovered that my usual finesse rod had no line on it for some reason. I think the mono helped me from ripping the hook out of their mouths since I didn't have the lighter rod.

I tried the mojo rig this past weekend after watching your video and slayed the bass on a lizard. Made sure to use a light wire 1/0 hook which I think made a big difference. Thanks!
You will have to use a heavier weight and then it will defeat it's ability to be fished on top of the submerged grass. So in essence you will be fishing a modified Carolina Rig.
I'm going to be fishing on the Tennessee river . The area is Cuba Landing , near Johnsonville and Crooked Creek Marina . I would like to know what I would need to be doing in the spring time since this mostly ledge fishing in that area ? Not very many good creeks around this area . Just got a real nice bass boat . using jig skirt material along with extra line to hold it WILL cause friction..and result in break offs..its only a matter of time if you dont retie. Use a very small swivel and tie your mainline braid to the swivel..it gives you much more feel of the grass
The XX worms should be fine but you will notice that the bags with the regular soft plastics will start to feel thinner in about six months so it's a good temporary fix. Go to Academy or Dicks and pick you up some Worm Binder Bags and keep them in there.
I'm assuming you are fishing from the shore. I would use chartreuse spinnerbaits with gold Colorado blade, dark colored soft plastics, jigs with rattles, lipless cranks or anything else that makes noise or vibration.
I'm from WV and you are spot on. Was hoping fluke would say yes been at Tygart lake WV to give me some tips on some rigs and what seems to work best in this area :( Shot in the dark really lol
It's better when fishing submerged grass because it doesn't get hung up in the grass like a texas rigged worm does. It rides on top of the grass and pulls through it easily.
I fished this today in Rhode Island. Got 3 on it. LOVE IT!! Only thing is my rod is soft so i need tight drag to set hook but the hook straightens on hookset. Net setting it hard. And I'm also missing fish. I was using a light wire wide gap hook. I have some offset but they are thick but very sharp? Can you inbox me with some tips? Tried this rig on guntersville the grass is getting pretty thick were i fish , any ways i caught 3 and missed two in less then an hour they were absolutely killin a magnum trick worm on this rig . Also I was fishing a rocky shoreline with small rock bottom. Used a 1/16oz weight in 4-12feet of water. No problem staying in contact with the bottom.

It's a Dobyns Champion 701SF 7' rod with an old Okuma reel that they don't make anymore. The line is PowerPro.
The mold I use to make the weights is called the "Lure Body Mold". The size I use the most is the 1/16th. If you buy the mold. Make sure you get a small pack of the S-040 Core Shaft to go with it. You will need them for making the hole in the weight.

It depends on the type of algae. If it that slimy stuff then you may pick up a little but it should still work better than most other things. Start with using a worm with a pointed head like a trick worm or finesse worm and see how that works.

Hey Gene, love your videos. I had seen on one you mentioned not being able to find tungsten cylindrical weights anymore (maybe the finesse chat?). Anyway, if you're still looking, Vike makes one, avail at TW. The only tip I would add is if bed fishing, pull the silicone strands from the bottom (hook side) of the sinker. If you use a white or chartreuse skirt strand, then don't trim it, it really helps as a visual marker when sight fishing. If the long strands are on the bottom strands it won't catch extra grass.
I really needed this today...fished a new lake today that was very grassy and was able to catch them on a texas rig but it was definitely hard and a lot of wasted time clearing the grass off my worm haha.

Great video. There's a small lake nearby with some deep grass, will be trying this technique. Will also be trying the reverse (mojo weight on bottom with hook up the line--drop shot) to see what the fish like more. Been having success there with heavy drop shot on 65# braid short leader hook to heavy weight, but I really like finesse styles. Really enjoy catching a big fish and carefully reeling it instead of just using power. Thanks for your quality videos, really helpful.

It's hard to answer that question because the bass don't read the rule book. They will do what they want to do according to conditions. My best advise is the method I used for 12 years of bank fishing. You need to fan cast at every spot. This will efficiently cover as much area as possible.
Bass fishing in WV is a true test of a fisherman's skill and patience. All of our lakes are pretty small and very heavily pressured.
Awesome rig, thanks for sharing! I hit the lake once a week and I've been skunked for 2 weeks strait throwing my usual stuff. Hit the water today and decided to try this out. It did great! Although I used a medium baitcaster setup with 14lb mono( its my crankbait rod) and a 8lb fluorocarbon leader since i discovered that my usual finesse rod had no line on it for some reason. I think the mono helped me from ripping the hook out of their mouths since I didn't have the lighter rod.

It's not bad in the timber but when you catch a good one then the light line becomes an issue and you may break some fish off.

I tried the mojo rig this past weekend after watching your video and slayed the bass on a lizard. Made sure to use a light wire 1/0 hook which I think made a big difference. Thanks!

You will have to use a heavier weight and then it will defeat it's ability to be fished on top of the submerged grass. So in essence you will be fishing a modified Carolina Rig.
I'm going to be fishing on the Tennessee river . The area is Cuba Landing , near Johnsonville and Crooked Creek Marina . I would like to know what I would need to be doing in the spring time since this mostly ledge fishing in that area ? Not very many good creeks around this area . Just got a real nice bass boat . using jig skirt material along with extra line to hold it WILL cause friction..and result in break offs..its only a matter of time if you dont retie. Use a very small swivel and tie your mainline braid to the swivel..it gives you much more feel of the grass

Yep. I have several different mounts that I made out of PVC pipe.
The XX worms should be fine but you will notice that the bags with the regular soft plastics will start to feel thinner in about six months so it's a good temporary fix. Go to Academy or Dicks and pick you up some Worm Binder Bags and keep them in there.
I'm assuming you are fishing from the shore. I would use chartreuse spinnerbaits with gold Colorado blade, dark colored soft plastics, jigs with rattles, lipless cranks or anything else that makes noise or vibration.

It's better when fishing submerged grass because it doesn't get hung up in the grass like a texas rigged worm does. It rides on top of the grass and pulls through it easily.
I fished this today in Rhode Island. Got 3 on it. LOVE IT!! Only thing is my rod is soft so i need tight drag to set hook but the hook straightens on hookset. Net setting it hard. And I'm also missing fish. I was using a light wire wide gap hook. I have some offset but they are thick but very sharp? Can you inbox me with some tips? Tried this rig on guntersville the grass is getting pretty thick were i fish , any ways i caught 3 and missed two in less then an hour they were absolutely killin a magnum trick worm on this rig . Thanks for the video flukemaster has pretty much taught me to bass fish ive caught more bass this year then in all the years ive fished combined i really appreciate it
