I love both these cartridges but would take the .32 over the .22 all day long for one reason- those misfires. I know rimfires are much more reliable today than 50 or 100 years ago but by design, even considering modern improvements, they are inferior in reliability to center fire cartridges. I shoot enough .22 to know that the ignition system is just not that reliable. Thanks for the great review, Sam! I totally want a LCR in 327mag. Because I have arthritis, I had considered 22mag, but have become aware of many people experiencing misfires due to hard primers or just bad gun designs. I've also heard of people getting rid of 22mag revolvers, because of horrifically heavy triggers (even with LCRs, where some examples are great and others not so much). I think 22mag is a great rifle round, but I personally wouldn't use it for defense (even though the ballistics & lack of recoil are good). Even though I'm sure that some have had good experience, I personally would always be concerned about reliability.
Thanks. Yeah, if you can find .32 S&W Long wadcutters and LRN, which I can almost guarantee you can, these have as little recoil as this .22 Mag, but with better performance. Roughly the same 100 ft lbs, but from a snub with a bigger bullet. And like you said, better trigger as those rimfire double actions are hard to use.
If you want one, go ahead and order one. I just got mine. Took a couple of months to come in. And they carry nice. My wife has had a Charter Arms undercover 32mag since 1985. She will not consider anything else. I tried to talk her into a S&W M&P EZ 380 and she turned it down. She did like the LCR except it's harder to open the cylinder. But probably because it's new. I have no issue with it.
You must be a Ruger salesman, LOL. You are definitely getting me insterested in an LCR in 327, I could just wish they were a bit cheaper, but............. Thanks for the great videos.
Two really cool cartridges! :) I think the 25 yard test is a fairly good indicator of what one can expect at, say, 7 yards or so. Shooting fairly fast yet well aimed shots at 25 yards would give one an idea of what they'd be capable of under critical stress at closer range. Plus, it's great seeing how practically accurate a cartridge/firearm combination is, anyway.
Yeah, it makes me feel good about that round for carry if I can hit it at 25. I scrapped a video yesterday that turned out awful for many reasons, mostly the ballistic test, but at 25 yards in my G2C the comparison ammo was 12" low at 25 yards. The reason for not posting it, is I did a long intro of "the best" snubby load in .357 Mag, and when I tested the ammo (which I extensively tested for years to come to this conclusion of it being the best) it was 100% different ammo than previous boxes. My new box of it went from being 1,150 FPS to 1,250 FPS. Went for no recoil to massive recoil and from no flash to fireballs. I hate when ammo companies do this. But in general you are right. I don't think it's fair even when people say "lets test this ammo" and film just a gel block and base the results solely on terminal ballistics. Terminal ballistics only matter if in the real world a real person can shoot it well, that's why I do long drawn out presentations, as to give the whole perspective.
@@GunSam And that is why we enjoy our videos so much; the detail and ton of information presented. I still think the bologna and fiberboard addition is genius. As for the ammo, manufacturers really should let us know when they change things. I don't think unannounced changes have ever gone well for the consumer. I hope you can get the "best snubby ammo" project sorted I'm quite curious. Way back in the late 80s/early 90s when my career began (I was a dispatcher and sort-of reserve then for a couple years) my snubby .357 was usually stuffed with Winchester 110 gr magnums. I've since learned that probably would not have worked out quite as well as I thought at the time. LOL
The 32 H & R mag is a dream to shoot through the Ruger LCR 327. I love that round. I also have the NAA Black Widow chambered in 22 mag/22lr as my deep concealed backup. Rimfire cartridges generally do have a reliability issue from time to time but I haven't experienced that yet though the Black Widow. The 22 mag, although not perfect, is a better round than some people realize.
Hi there Sam, always enjoy your videos, as most reviews only focuses on the performance of the firearm in an individuals hands while they are shooting. And they would most of times focus on the target, and not their hands and the firearm as well to indicate if they are jerky shooters, pulling the trigger, or a flincher. I've also noticed that even old shooters are still scared of sound and or the recoil felt of the firearms. This makes me not rethink my stance on .22. The thing is I never went below 7.65 Cal, which I never felt under powered and unsafe with. I was thinking, getting a .22WMR because of the recoil and if my mother has to grab the firearm to shoot, it would be off putting at all. My dad, typical Navy man, decided a revolver back in the day would get my mom into shooting, what he didn't factor into was, .357Mag wasn't the right caliber, and the weight alone of the revolver was intimidating to someone that was of a small stature and under 120Lbs, who also never shot before. For me, I was comfortable with the revolver at 90Lbs, but then again, I had been out shooting with them since I was 10 and 65Lbs (and no, as a grown up I weigh 150Lbs on a 5'8 structure). Even with law enforcement as my background for close to 2 decades (I did numerous other forms of employment before getting into my dream, to see if it would make a difference), and 9mm being the choice of caliber. I don't find that a bad caliber, I would still not mind having a .22WMR as my private carry, not even thinking that it can only be a backup carry. Sufficient damage, sufficient stopping power, and I haven't met a person that told me to shoot them with a .22 as it can do nothing. On the other hand, I do understand, that most law enforcement officers will tell you, if it isn't a pistol that is in at least 9mm, you are underpowered in a gunfight. I also understand that my brothers by career choice would say, anything other then a pistol is bulltwang. What I also noticed is, that due to lack of training from a work related instance, and the practice times we put in, that most law enforcement officers should rather just stay out of the discussion of any firearm. Let me see. If I have to acquire a new firearm it will make a few people shout, what the hell are you thinking. For the revolver: Taurus, 2" .22WMR For the pistol: Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm Full size Now I can already year the die hard Glock people telling me, the pistol I should change. My reasoning, I shoot with it at work, and how better to not rethink the mechanicals of my service pistol and it is light, polymer (I can't believe I just said I would take a polymer and not a steel firearm, okay I've changed to one in the last 7 years, and I started trusting polymer too.) The revolver, you would tell me is the wrong caliber and make, but personally, the Taurus we had in Stainless Steel and a 4" barrel has never let us down. Okay, I'm a blue steel kinda girl. I do not feel underpowered with a .22 and if by off chance they don't sell that caliber revolver in South Africa anymore and my only choice in revolver is a 38 Special, I would still feel comfortable, as long I don't have to carry a light, as I know. More weight to the firearm, the less recoil I will feel. Ps. Thank you guys for the input that is going to follow, but I should also mention. I probably have been shooting longer than most of you have been out of diapers.
As usual great video. Your intro music that's not why I'm hear I'm amazed people make it a issue. I've owned 5 chronograph in my shooting life they all are frustrating. I prefer to chrono on cloudy days that's when I get best results and as you have noticed a black sharply can be really handy on bad chrono days. You are amazing at 25yds with your lcr people may feel safe at that distance when they see the size of your gun they are in for a surprise. Personally I'm really not a fan of the heritage in any caliber. I'm not positive but my Ruger single 6 seemed like it was much higher velocities????? Who knows and even less care. Your videos have improved in the last 4 years so much its like a different guy doing and your editing is way better than any other channel. Thanks for making learning fun and the excellent videos
I carry a NAA 22wmr most days. When I need something heavier for jacket weather I carry a S&W 437. I have a couple semi auto's, but being left handed I've shot 10's of thousands rounds of revolver ammo and only thousands of rounds of semi auto ammo. If I need something for a real world problem I trust a revolver more. I'm glad I found your channel last week. Most people just try to tell everyone to buy a Glock.
Personally, I just use my Rough Rider mag/snake shot for pests or scaring off wild dogs. It's ok for that or just plinking but I'd never use it as an actual self defense against a person unless it was all I had.
Yeah...but he should have used equal barrel lengths. The barrel of the .22 Mag is 2&1/2× longer than the .32 Mag. That is a significant difference in the case of handguns. When shooting .32 H&R Magnum Critical D. from my Ruger Single Six With 4&5/8" barrel (vs. my Ruger LCR with < 2" barrel), I see about 2" more penetration ballistic gel. With Hard Cast FP I get 4" more penetration from the SS over the LCR
I've seen 200lb plus bucks drop dead or run less than 35 yrds with a well placed shit by a 22 magnum, meanwhile I've seen the same weight plus deer and smaller run a hundred yrds with a kill shot by by 270 and 12 gauge buck or slug and 30.30 and 308 ,which is mind blowing to me, I know this as fact as I've been witness to his and I had been the one to kill a handful of bucks with my 22 mag and 270 and 3030
Great video man. Two very underrated calibers, but as you’ve shown, there is hope for them yet! I’ve heard that Oscar Mayer has considered supplying you with a lifetime supply of bologna for your bologna packs......can you confirm or deny this rumor?!
Obviously, you put a lot of work into your demonstrations. I think you do a fantastic job. And any fool that thinks a revolver is not a good self-defense weapon it’s just that, a fool.
Great test. Wasn't impressed with the misfires of the rimfire round. Very impressed with low recoil .32 mag. But round is tough to find, and expensive. Would like to see test with .32 long......or underrated .38 S&W....which is close to .380 in power with it's heavier bullet with less velocity.
Gun Sam, you should use keltec pmr 30 it would be better than rough ride Bec wheel cylinder has a gas leak cause reduces fps out of muzzle I would recommend test keltec pmr 30 is best result .
I love how people complain that the snub nose is inaccurate beyond "card table" distances, whatever that is. 10 inch plate at 25 yards is outstanding. I've always heard, and believe, that the gun is always more accurate that the shooter.
What is different about the LCR and especially a 6 shot, is the cylinder rotates and then stops long before the hammer drops, and that short to medium distance in trigger pull length from cylinder stopping till hammer dropping must be like 4 lbs or something, and smooth as butter. If you pull the trigger on or past the first finger joint, the gun stabilizes itself and it super accurate.
Would love it if you could test the .22 Mag in a tiny NAA revolver. I have one as a EDC throw it in the pocket and forget about it pistol as a supplement to my usual carry. Mine also keyholes most .22 Mag loads but the Hornady keyholes the least so that is what I keep in it. I don't expect or necessarily want expansion but it would be nice to see how it performs in the Jug-Or-Not.
Good stuff. Both preformed fairly well ballistically but man those misfires are louder than the round going off,not very reassuring for protection purposes.I had quite a few misfires when I had my .22mag LCR[probably 2-3 per 75-100rds] and figured it was the gun.I always used Hornady and CCI/Speer ammo.Have you noticed more misfires with the Magnum ammo vs .22lr?
Me thinks that SAA front blade should be a little shorter for your ~20yd shooting. The Single Six with fixed sights seems to be pretty right on in my experience.
I'm getting ready to start loading for my dad's 32 SW long. If I'd have known what a 327 was a few years ago when you could get anything under the sun, I would have one now! Since I got back into reloading and got a new Caldwell like yours and I love it. I forgot about doing my part with the lighting / shade. Drove 25 miles to test a few critical test rounds of 38 and put the rig in a patch of blazing morning sunlight. I was sad with myself and the results.
.32 Long is about the best ammo to target shoot. The .32 H&R really isn't much above the .32 Long. The chronograph has good and bad days. I did a video right after this one, 70 rounds of .22 through it consecutively, zero malfunctions.
The problem is Michigan. I have to register all guns to myself in order to even do a transfer at an FFL. It's messed up here so I can never borrow handguns from people not from here.
Thanks for the vid Sam. The 22 did better than I though it would! What is your opinion of the LCR? I was looking at an LCRx in 327 in a gun shop last week and felt conflicted. I think it's ugly but maybe in a cool way? Then it got real hard to close the cylinder. I mentioned it to the shop owner and he just said to push it harder. I did and it eventually closed but I didn't like that at all. Did yours give you trouble during a video last year? Wasn't closed all the way? I think I remember that? Thanks again for the vid Sir!
what do you think about shooting techniques where the thumbs aren't tucked? I see people shooting all the time with thumbs resting against a revolver cylinder or up against the slide of an automatic. when I'm shooting right-handed my right thumb just touches the tip of my middle finger and my left thumb pad on the nail of my right, left-handed is opposite, when shooting both hands. am I just nit picking? I've personally observed flappy thumbs jam revolvers and automatics, and by my logic any technique that could cause a gun to fail is bad, but it's never addressed or mentioned by anybody but me. have you an opinion on the subject?
for some reason U Wont compaire a 22 mag.against 32 s&w long Why? Alot of people hav been Wating for it for a Long time? prob.bc 22 mag.will beat 32 s&w long & it should bc its a mag.but still like too see?
This would have been a great video if you did two things..... 1. Get a better chronograph. This one is displaying too many errors. Either send it to the manufacturer for warranty work or purchase a new one. 2. Get a better .22 Magnum. Yours does not appear mechanically accurate. Either let Heritage do warranty work or purchase a different one. Taurus is making great .22 Magnum pistols now. Looking forward to your next video!
The 32 mag would be the better choice. It looks like you may have gotten a bad batch of 22 mag ammo. Centerfire handguns give better reliability as far as ignition of the primers on the first strike.
Love your videos but miss the jug or not box it was different enough to make it very interesting. Cool comparison but almost everyone is shooting ballistics gel.
I agree with you. What if a bad guy started firing at you from 25 yards, are you supposed to wait until they’re less than 30’ away ? 20-25 yards is perfectly understandable to practice at.
I don't remember what I did or didn't say as this video is older, but I have found that by reducing your target size, either to a tiny one at 7 yards or just by backing up further, it makes my instinctive shooting better. Like if the goal was to not look at my sights, pop off rounds from 7 yards, I probably will miss, but always shooting from distance beyond 25 yards, tends to make my instinctive shooting from 7 yards significantly better. That's the main reason I do it.
CCI Maxi mags don't expand and tumble in pure gel out of revolvers. I'd be curious what happens to Maxi mags with your meat pack, if they still tumble.
I'm a fan of the .32 H&R. Lately I've been seeing very low prices on the S&W Shield in .30 super carry. I like the concept and I'm tempted to get one but I don't think the .30 Super Carry is going to catch on and I will have the same trouble finding ammo as I do with the .32 H&R. Do you have any experience with the .30 Super Carry?

I'll point to the obvious that doubling the length of the 32's barrel would of gotten you more penetration. I'll admit I'm not sure what purpose a 22wmr pistol is trying to fill. Marketing department needs to innovate. LoL

I have the 5.5 inch single seven. It is a fun gun to shoot. The American Eagle 100 grain loads shoot flat. They are loud so hearing protection is a must. Federal semiwadcutters in 32 H&R are mild and have little recoil and a lot quieter. If you get a single seven you'll love it.
Nice test! If you want some muzzle blast 💥 comparison, I tested several 22magnum loads out of lcr & found Hornandy was least flashy. The CCI TNT was most flashy. Could be important in low light defense as you’ll be strobe lighting with every flash & the noise will be very disorienting - Bill Burr reference 😆 22mag barks like a big dawg!
Sam, gotta say your vids and how you do things. Never fail to watch your whole vid from start to finish, Ignore the critics
As always Sam, informative & entertaining. Thank you for keepin' up the great reviews!
Thank you.
This channel keeps on getting better and better! nice work.
For the revolver: Taurus, 2" .22WMR
For the pistol: Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm Full size
Now I can already year the die hard Glock people telling me, the pistol I should change.
Cool comparison!
Thank you. The LCR does a lot of things more effortlessly than other revolvers.
GOOD VIDEO, THANKS FOR BEING HUMBLE
Thanks. But when was I humble? lol
Personally, I just use my Rough Rider mag/snake shot for pests or scaring off wild dogs. It's ok for that or just plinking but I'd never use it as an actual self defense against a person unless it was all I had.
Really like both cartridges
I own both revolvers, the Heritage is a good ratter and the Ruger is my EDC. Good to see a video featuring them. Thanks.
Thank you.
With Hard Cast FP I get 4" more penetration from the SS over the LCR
actually have both. enjoy both! 22 mag my favorite rimfire!
You are better than an average shot!
I've seen 200lb plus bucks drop dead or run less than 35 yrds with a well placed shit by a 22 magnum, meanwhile I've seen the same weight plus deer and smaller run a hundred yrds with a kill shot by by 270 and 12 gauge buck or slug and 30.30 and 308 ,which is mind blowing to me, I know this as fact as I've been witness to his and I had been the one to kill a handful of bucks with my 22 mag and 270 and 3030
Good job. Thanks
Good one.
I like the ballistic gel test a bit BETTER but both are great
Shows GREAT penatration of the rd.
Nice interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
what carry ammunition do you recommend for 32 h&r magnum in a s&w 332 ti liteweight? thanks.
I like both of them.
Don't own either caliber but enjoyed watching. Great video!!
I have a .22 magnum rifle. Love it
@@SwampSquatch70 yeah, I'd love to have one myself.
I'd like to know how that Critical D. 32 mag compares with the Buffalo Bore 32 long (not mag) wadcutter. Buf B 32 mag is too hot for my very light 32.
Shooting 32 H&R through my LCR327 has very little recoil .. similar to 38spl LWC out of my LCR357
Yeah, except less recoil than standard pressure .38 Special.
I'm just not warming up to that Heritage. At least it's cheap! As for the 327 Mag LCR, that I can get on board with. Nice shooting at 25!
Just read your pinned comment about the theme music.
Sad now... 😟
Like it! Now, how about maybe a 327 fed mag 3-4" barrel For ballistics, , Vv, , ?
I love how people complain that the snub nose is inaccurate beyond "card table" distances, whatever that is. 10 inch plate at 25 yards is outstanding. I've always heard, and believe, that the gun is always more accurate that the shooter.
What is different about the LCR and especially a 6 shot, is the cylinder rotates and then stops long before the hammer drops, and that short to medium distance in trigger pull length from cylinder stopping till hammer dropping must be like 4 lbs or something, and smooth as butter. If you pull the trigger on or past the first finger joint, the gun stabilizes itself and it super accurate.
.32 for me in Miami. 👍👍😎
Used to have one, but was not impressed with it. Going that short of barrel makes it less powerful than most .22 LR ammo through most handguns.
I think the misfire rate is about the same.
How about a test actually shooting beef rib bones vs the fiberboard? With .327, .38 and .357?
For publishing baloney penitration, is there a sectional densities different between name brand and generic? ;p
Getting heavier bullets in the 32h&r . But 22mag is better then nothing if that's what u can stand to shoot.
Me thinks that SAA front blade should be a little shorter for your ~20yd shooting. The Single Six with fixed sights seems to be pretty right on in my experience.
I had a Heritage & it started missfiring the cases on 22 WMR are thicker than 22 lr. I think the hammer spring is marginal .
Mine has seemed to misfire a little less with .22 LR.
I've shot about 100 rounds of 22mag through my heritage and not a misfire yet, but have shot around 300 .22lr and have had 5-6 misfires.
Did you measure the expanded bullets?
Sam going back through your videos , when did the rough rider start to give so many misfires approximate rounds ?
I'm getting ready to start loading for my dad's 32 SW long. If I'd have known what a 327 was a few years ago when you could get anything under the sun, I would have one now! Since I got back into reloading and got a new Caldwell like yours and I love it. I forgot about doing my part with the lighting / shade. Drove 25 miles to test a few critical test rounds of 38 and put the rig in a patch of blazing morning sunlight. I was sad with myself and the results.
My point about the 327 is, I want one and I want a box of every round that it will chamber and shoot.
.32 Long is about the best ammo to target shoot. The .32 H&R really isn't much above the .32 Long. The chronograph has good and bad days. I did a video right after this one, 70 rounds of .22 through it consecutively, zero malfunctions.
The velocity from a Walther is around 1200, so there is a difference.
Sam, we got to try a 3" bbl in the .32 Mag... perhaps I need to box up my Charter Arms Professional and let you play with it?!
The problem is Michigan. I have to register all guns to myself in order to even do a transfer at an FFL. It's messed up here so I can never borrow handguns from people not from here.
In reality through a rifle the 22 mag is a efficient powerhouse 300 ft lbs is considerable energy.
I missed the old intro music.
for some reason U Wont compaire a 22 mag.against 32 s&w long Why?
The Heritage misfires on other ammunition sad to say
Cool
Love your videos but miss the jug or not box it was different enough to make it very interesting. Cool comparison but almost everyone is shooting ballistics gel.
Not everyone shoots bologna.
A+
Can you do a video comparing both calibers with the Speer gold dot?
I did the Gold Dot but only the .22 Mag was Gold Dot. I could not acquire .380 Gold Dot.
Ty
CCI Maxi mags don't expand and tumble in pure gel out of revolvers. I'd be curious what happens to Maxi mags with your meat pack, if they still tumble.
Where can you even get a hold of 22mag JHP these days. All I can find is TMJ :(
Online, everywhere online. Never had any issues.
@@GunSam ah, no mail order ammo in my state.
👍
I’m always impressed at how clean your blocks look. Do you hit them with a hair dryer or heat gun?
Great video Sam. Its interesting that various media outlets are saying some of these magnums will be discontinued in the near future. What do you think about this? ♠️🎩☯️
I guess I am neither here nor there. I am not sure the market is big enough for stand alone .22 Mag defense ammo for too many people to be concerned.
I hope the 41 mag doesn’t go away but it’s losing presence no one making fire arms for it like the 25 acp.
@@357-swagnumultramagax9 agreed.
@@GunSam agree, but current circumstances is about what you can get ahold situation. Not everyone has either small or large powerful cartridge weapons. Everything now is an option.
@@357-swagnumultramagax9 .25 will last longer. A $1,000 revolver vs an $80 Phoenix Arms. I have noticed the general public tends to prefer risking their protection in order to be cheap, as a normal practice.
Mantap👍 gun
I'll point to the obvious that doubling the length of the 32's barrel would of gotten you more penetration. I'll admit I'm not sure what purpose a 22wmr pistol is trying to fill. Marketing department needs to innovate. LoL
989 TO 1023 FPS IST EXTREME SPREAD OF 34 FPS .32 CRITICAL DEFENSE CORRECT?
959FPS TO 1053 FPS EXTREME SPREAD FROM READINGS OF CHRONOGRAF UND .22 MAG NEIN .22 LONG RIFLE? CRITICAL DEFENSE BRAND ALSO?
I'd go with .32 Magnum over .22 Magnum.
100% If for no other reason reliability.
@@rob.3575 and power.
The .32 H&R mag is being discontinued, as well as the .25acp,.32acp..40 and.41 mag.
Now you gotta get a Ruger Single Seven in .327!
personally, I would rather have the SP101 in 4" if I wanted to go up a bit.
@@GunSam That SP101 trigger though.... yikes.
👍 and you have a nice day.
You must realy hate bologna.
32 HR Mag and 327 Fed Mag are the best caliber for any revolver !!

Much more baloney damage withe the .32 H&R!
I would not feel undergunned if all I have was a 32H&R snubbie to carry. 22mag is another story...
Nice test!
If you want some muzzle blast 💥 comparison, I tested several 22magnum loads out of lcr & found Hornandy was least flashy. The CCI TNT was most flashy.
Could be important in low light defense as you’ll be strobe lighting with every flash & the noise will be very disorienting - Bill Burr reference 😆
22mag barks like a big dawg!
I’ll link test vid if you want!
