The Gettysburg Address - November 19, 1863:
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who died here that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety, do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, while it can never forget what they did here. It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us. That from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. Only as an adult, did I realize the magnitude of Lincoln's words. His was a beautiful mind who could captivate the sacred imagination of America with his underspoken and honest expression of leadership. An amazing man who understood that the Union would always be a work -in-progress.

After reading in its entirety, my reaction was "WoW, what a beautiful summation, using multiple adjectives, of how this person views then-President Lincoln. R. Cobbs should be a writer for a politician if not himself as an author." Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this video.
As someone who is 15, I can say that we the people after those who served to protect our country and future shall continue the work laid out by activities of the past. No one shall be judged for who they are, what they believe in, what they like or even what they look like. In the south, no couple weather they are gay men or women, male, female or transgender shall have to cower in fear of beginning killed by those who wish to stop what they believe is a sin. A black man shall never have to fear being shot or arrested for walking through a white neighborhood just to get home quickly. We the people shall forever be united to stand up with our allies to oppose those whom wish to define us, Citizens of this great nation.
The world will little note, or long remember what we say here.....

Just a thought, When Abraham Lincoln gave this speech, this is exactly what he would have hoped for an African American president of the United states of America. This is why I love America so much, it has always had great leaders. People fought for their rights and made America the country it is now. A true global superpower.

Saumil Pradhan Lincoln actually didn't believe in racial equality, as seen by the Lincoln- Douglas debates in 1858 where he said something along the lines of not seeing blacks as "fit for public office". Look it up if you don't believe me. Of course he should still be respected as a visionary for his time. Racism was the accepted belief back then, and the majority of Northerns weren't fighting for black rights

Lincoln had the biggest challenge of all presidents ever. Yes, more so than Roosevelt or Truman. Lincoln did not face an external enemy. He faced his own people torn up by ideologies. And you can only appreciate that if you knew what it means to point a gun at your own brother. Obama may not have achieved a lot, but USA, to an outsider like myself, looked more united and coherent during Obama's presidency than it looks today after him.

I have started to think of the Gettysburg Address as a living document. A set of standards and instructions spoken by one of Americas greatest leaders that Americans should strive to live up to to this day, and into the future.
I know this video is old but I must point out that Lincoln gave the address on November 19th, 1863, not 1865.

So many people admire America from a distance not knowing what makes it what it is, I believe this speech encapsulates (though not totally) the main idea of what the founding fathers were trying to achieve, understanding these ideals and putting them into practice is not for the cynical nor for the faint of heart!

My grandparents were both buhdist and they say one nation under god when they pledge allegiance to America upon arrival.They both understood that if it's important than just say it out of respect for the Americans.I know alot of us dont intentionally go and offend other religions but how do we respect their trully if we can't respect the ones here?

Obama did not go to Gettysburg for the 150th anniversary remembrance. That is all you need to know about him. Lincoln arrived and made history. A man of the hour, a man of his times, a great American.

Vilkas LBJ visited Gettysburg, but not when he was in office as president. Wilson visited on July 3; 134 days before the anniversary.
In my previous comment, I was directly speaking about presidents (while in office at the time) visited Gettysburg on Nov 19 because the person was talking about the "Anniversary Remembrance.". Out of the recent 28 presidents since Lincoln, 27 didn't achieve this. Only William H. Taft did.
Donald Tramp 2016 Wilson did so on that date in concert with the reunion of the soldiers, he did not decide the date but this was when the huge gathering for the milestone was to be celebrated. Kennedy of course made his own private visit.
Obama's swearing in with the Lincoln bible was as it turned out to be all show. Lincoln was one to unite a country in the worst of times whereas Obama has done nothing but divide. Right out of the gate he moved to socialize healthcare and set the precedence for his entire career. Zero Republican votes, alienating half of the population and he has never looked back.
I look at all presidents warts and all. I make no excuses for any of them.
Obama is a terrible leader. I get no joy saying that. I look at this Iran catastrophe and I can't from any angle see the good in this.
Obama is a globalist figure not an American president. His actions indicate that he does not believe in the history of this country. He is not my president. He is a disgrace compared with the likes of Washington, Adams, Jackson, Garfield, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln.

I'm not Obama's biggest fan - far far from it. I definitely wouldn't say he was a great leader, but I wouldn't say he was the worst president.
In relation to the Iran deal, the deal isn’t perfect. No negotiation ever is. Iranian leaders have been on a superhighway, for the last 10 years, to create a nuclear weapon or a nuclear weapons program, with no speed limit. They've gone from 106 centrifuges to 19,0000 centrifuges in the last decade. This agreement will bring it down to 5,0000 - all of which will be under the support vision of the IAEA. The same is for the number of uranium going from 1200KG to 300KG.
Iran's money was frozen all over the world, and America wouldn't let them get *their* money back until they agreed to under their nuclear program.
It's not Israel vs Iran, or America vs Iran, or Muslim vs Jew, etc. It is those who want war vs. those who want peace. Khamenei has more in common with the Republicans and Netanyahu than he does with the Iranian people.

Not the standard Bliss version - close but no cigar. "This we may, in all propriety do"- loses the rhythm and poetry of "It is all together fitting and proper that we should do this". Obama also misses out the '"Under God"" bit in wishing the the nation "a new birth of freedom". I'm no theist, but leaving it out again spoils the flow.
Obama is an erudite, accomplished man. It's a shame he's not also a poet. The Address, to my mind is still one of the greatest political speeches of all time but in Obama's hands it is merely "very good"- and I'm a Brit!
But Obama was asked to recite Lincoln's original draft (or, the 'Nicolay Version') of the Address, which did not contain the phrase "under God."
Fair comment, except that we don't know what Lincoln actually said - the five reporters present all reported slightly different things. I do agree, though, that "under God" does not appear in either the Hay or Nikolay drafts.
All you need to know is that "under God" was added much later. We know that from history...even if you may not.
Obama gave us the version closest to the original.
@@andrepaige9669 We don't know what the original version was - contemporary versions would have been the Nicholay or Hay drafts. The Everett, Benton and Bliss versions came after the fact. There were five reporters present when Lincoln spoke his "few suitable words" but they all differ in some aspects. Obviously, it was Edward Everett who gave the actual Gettysburg Address and he spoke for two hours! Still, the Bliss version is taken as standard as it was the only version that Lincoln signed. It is what he would have said if he had had a little time to think about it - and I still think it's wonderful!

Clara Winters .... There's not several "versions" exactly, but when Lincoln was composing his speech he made several drafts, which explains the slight difference in wording. What a great man Abraham Lincoln was!

He omitted UNDER GOD. This is Lincoln's speech, not Obama's. He does not have license to alter the text.

Because he read from the Nicolay copy of the speech - written as the first draft by Lincoln himself, and owned by the library of congress - which does not contain "under God" in the first place. The copy owned by the government omits it; an employee of the government omitted it.
Lincoln omitted "under God" in his early drafts which is what Obama was asked to read. It is not known if Lincoln included "under God" in the delivered address but it is likely his did.
The only reason Obama has to be in a church is to listen to Jeremiah Wright

From my point of view America has lost these values. Greed and corruption and power have taken control. What the people need is a leader that is strong and willing to lead them into the future a symbol of peace and pride a standard bearer for the young and old to look at and follow. Someone who will stand up and say enough is enough. That someone as to have the ball's to lead the fight and listen to those around them and be able to tell the church that thier time is over. I don't like that the actual speech was not precisely quoted in this video. Every single word put down by Lincoln should remain untouched by those who choose to repeat this monumental speech in our country's history. Once you begin to substitute or abridge a great work you reduce it's impact and historical significance. I know it seems a minor petty detail but words, and how they are used have historical importance.

I have studies this for speech and debate. the actual reason is that, in the bible, the age of human life is said as "three score and ten" or 70 years. 87 is more than 70. When Lincoln said "four score and seven", he meant that most people who were alive when the nation was founded were now dead, and that America could no longer rely on the founding father for guidance. That is why he phrased it as "four score and seven", to contrast the then widely-known "three score and ten"

It saddened me when I heard him recite this great speech. Picked it up the second he said it. Why did he leave out " under God ?"
How would his family feel if 100 yrs from now someone re-wrote his speech to suit their agenda? I liked President Obama, I still do actually, I just thought it was sad he did what he did to those great words.

No "official" record exists of what Lincoln said that day at Gettysburg.
The version most often quoted, and used in the Lincoln Monument, is the "Bliss Copy". This was a copy Lincoln rewrote, since his original copy was all scribbled on, and messy.
Obama is reciting the "Nicolay Copy", named for Lincoln's Secretary. You can tell, mainly, as Obama says "This we may, in all propriety do." instead of the more well known "It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this"
So while I agree I prefer the Bliss Copy with its "That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom", Obama did not take it upon himself to edit the Gettysburg Address.
Dare we pray that there will _never_ be a Donald Trump reading of Lincoln's greatest speech.
I would rather that, and have the man acknowledge the greatness of President Lincoln, than to see all the comments online espousing Trump as a greater President than Lincoln.

As an outsider who admires great American men like Lincoln, John Muir and Martin Luther King, I feel bad for the American state today, with all its inequality and injustice, within and without.
I’ve pondered on this as well, from my understanding he would’ve been disappointed in both parties. Due to the fact that a majority of representatives in each political party only care for their own agenda passed on by others around them. None of them have the integrity and spine to disagree with their own party in fear of being rejected.
