    Key takeaways:
*1. Coherence in Speech-writing and Language Processing:*
    - Coherence in language processing involves more than just concepts; it also relies on thematic, spatial, and subject coherence.
    - Speechwriters aim to create coherence by using words that are familiar and relatable to the audience.
    *2. Thematic Coherence:*
    - Thematic coherence involves using words associated with a dominant theme to create a sense of connection and understanding for the audience.
    - Different words can contribute to thematic coherence, not just synonyms.
    *3. Spatial Coherence:*
    - Spatial coherence relates to the arrangement of words and ideas in a physical space, guiding the audience's understanding.
    *4. Subject Coherence:*
    - Subject coherence involves connecting words and ideas based on shared subjects, helping the audience follow the message.
*5. Coherence and the Gettysburg Address:*
    - The Gettysburg Address uses thematic coherence (dedicate), spatial coherence (here), and subject coherence (nation, democracy) to enhance its message.
    *6. Creating Problems for Engagement:*
    - Speechwriters should construct problems for the audience to engage them emotionally and cognitively.
    - Solving these problems through the message enhances its value and impact.
*7. Converting World Problems to Reader Problems:*
    - Turning problems in the world into problems that readers experience emotionally helps engage the audience.
    - Using language that signals a problem and a solution creates coherence and emotional resonance.
    *8. Ethical Considerations:*
    - Converting audience emotions into a problem-solving technique can be powerful but may raise ethical concerns.
*9. Lincoln's Technique in the Gettysburg Address:*
    - Lincoln converts the problem of mourning into a problem for the readers, engaging them emotionally.
    - He challenges the audience's understanding and uses their grief to motivate dedication to the cause.
    *10. Rhetorical Strategy and Speech-writing:*
    - Effective speeches strategically use coherence, emotional engagement, and ethical considerations to connect with the audience and convey a powerful message.

I'm hoping 🤞to see a lot more talks from Larry McEnerney now that he's retired. If anyone is looking for similar material you might want to look into other teachers from "The Little Red Schoolhouse", like Joseph M. Williams, Gregory G. Colomb and George Gopen. Good stuff, but not nearly as entertaining as a McEnerney lecture.

The fact that this instructor spent an hour explaining the brilliance of Lincoln's writing reinforces the splendor of Lincoln and his innate ability to resonate with Americans. I have serious doubts that Lincoln dissected his address the way this inductor did. He organically knew how to be persuasive and compassionate in his expressions. That's true LEADERSHIP.

Just one note to the good professor. Lincoln doesn't say the problem is that Democracy shall endure, but that "a government conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that All Men are created equal" shall endure.
I know it's easy to use Democracy as shorthand, but Democracy is not synonymous with Liberty or Equality before the law. It's not hard for a Democracy to be quite unfree.

This is easily and undoubtedly one of the best lectures I have ever watched in my entire life in any field of knowledge. I don't know whether that says more about me (because I'm young and I've probably haven't watched more lectures than a typical college student) or whether Mr. Larry McEnerney is really just that good, both as a writer and as a speaker. I know that praising him wouldn't really amount to anything more than a simple comment on a TH-cam video, but for the amount of things I've learned just by watching him speak, particularly this lecture as well as his other lectures about writing, I would simply say that Mr. McEnerney is one of the best educators in the world. Thank you for your invaluable service to us learners, and I hope you continue to live in peace together with your family and loved ones.

I'm a very old fella who's seen more lectures than is medically advisable. Your instinct is right on the money - you just watched a WORLD CLASS lecturer.
Please don't judge your professors by this standard though! Your coach wasn't LeBron James either, right?
