  • In this video, we discuss and demonstrate what it's like to drive the 2016 Chevy Colorado in the snow while in 4WD. We also witness certain things while driving this vehicle in 4WD that you might not find in an automatic 4WD car or SUV. Curious to hear how this operates? Sit back and enjoy the show!

Switching to 4WD required electronic actuators that required movement to completely engage, this is why shifting in motion is perfectly fine. 4 wheel low required a reduction of gears in the transfer case, thus you need to make the shift in neutral. It seems these newer systems have safety features that don’t allow you to do anything too stupid that will destroy your truck.

Ok I’ve owned two Colorados of the second generation, a 2016 Z71 4x4, and a 2019 WT 4x4, both with factory towing packages. With that said, the Z71 4x4 came with an Autotrack transfer case with 4 different settings, 2hi, 4hi auto AWD and 4 low. But the WT 4x4, only has the basic transfer case with 3 settings of 2hi, 4hi&4low. Both having a neutral setting for flat tow. That was the last generation. The latest has the same on TrailBoss,Z71 &ZR2, the automatic Autotrack transfer case, but in all other trims, WT an LT have a newer transfer case that has the AWD feature, or 2 hi, but NO LOW RANGE AVAILABLE at all. The other option is the G80 automatic locking rear differential that is available on all trim levels, except ZR2 that had electric locking front and rear! The only issue is in snow and even rain it’s very easy to break traction and end up sideways because both rear wheels are locked together and will loose traction together, but if you don’t have that option, that come with the tow package, or as a stand alone option. Then you have what’s called an open differential. That will alway send power the the only wheel with the least traction, that’s mostly if both equal, will mean the inside wheel, that’s the drivers side in a left turn, or passenger side in a right turn, that won’t help you get going, but also help from getting sideways and loosing control, even with Stability control and traction control.

@@jimlahey6958 still have it 6 years this June. No issues the truck is still pristine and very rare on the streets. 46K a daily driver. I take it to car’s & coffee shows. The centennial Blue Color is a stand out color. CC/2wheel/short bed/leather package. So it is 1 of 339. Of this model.

I find in the really deep snow that the traction control and stability track really limit how much snow you can go through. Good for street driving in winter.

I have a 2016 Chevy Colorado and moving to Tahoe, CA. That part of the region experiences wintery conditions. I get confused on the 4x4 high and the 4x4 low, which of the feature do I need when driving during snowfall or icy conditions? I also have Ultra-terrain tires that have the M+S rating and also have a 3 peak mountain rating

4 Low should never be used on the street. It is more for something like if you were off-road and stuck.
