  • Finding wildlife is no easy task, which is why in this video, I will introduce you to a sound recording technique that will help you identify wild animals in the area by recording their sounds. This is a less often used approach compared to using trail cameras, but with one huge advantage: it allows you to capture sounds coming from all directions and from further away, something that trail cameras struggle with.
Watch the video to learn all about the Tree Ears technique step-by-step.

I saw my first trail cam a few weeks ago out in our local forest. I stopped, waved, smiled and did a little dance hoping the owner has a sense of humor. Thanks for sharing Patrik.

Hey Patrick, great video on setting up. Yes it would be great to have a part two or three. I have wanted to record like this for a while. Greg

Thank you, that's great to hear. Oh nice, is your primary goal to record the ambience or to discover animals? Let me know if you have any questions regarding the gear or the process. I'd be happy to help.

Really interesting video and method to look for wildlife. Actually I've never thought about it before, even because the gear can be stolen. Furthermore I'm trying to learn animals "voices" in order to recognize them when I'm in the field. Anyway, great video, super useful. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, the risk is higher with this setup compared to trail cameras. I always try to place it far away from the nearest road or path and camouflage it so it doesn't stand out, but it could still get stolen.
I am learning their voices as well, but unfortunately, I still don't recognise most of them. I should make a video with all the different recordings that I have and let others help me identify them.

Super video, še nekaj tehnikalij iz backstagea :) Da, vsekakor bi me zanimal še "postprocessing" ... če imaš za 3 dni posnetka, kako ga obdelaš? Porabiš še en teden, da celega preposlušaš in označiš in izrežeš zanimive segmente? Kako si potem gradiš katalog (kam shranjuješ, kakšne metapodatke daješ zraven in v kakšni obliki)?

Hvala :) Super, dober feedback.

    It that better than trailcam?

    • @PatrikInNature

Well, it depends. It is certainly better for locating birds, as they rarely appear on trail cameras. Also, it gives you higher chances of identifying animals that are close but not directly in front of the trail camera. On the other hand, it is a more expensive setup, and it requires you to analyse the recordings.
      Cheers,
      Patrik
