What a touching ceremony at the Pro Football HOF. Derrick Thomas was an amazing player on the field and an amazing person off the field..GOD BLESS..R.I.P.
My dad is a retired firefighter and when DT got into the accident and my dad responded. He was the last person DT ever spoke to. It’s sad to see him pass
I loved how he played. I met DT at a fan signing at Independence Center. He was a wonderful, pleasant person. There will never be another as loved by KC as DT!
When I was really young I'm the 90s my dad got me my first chiefs jersey. It was a DT jersey. Neil smith and DT were the best. When I was very young I was years old and got a pic with a young tight end from Cali. Number 88!:)
DT was one of the very best and he had class too... Nobody will ever wear the number 58 on the Kansas City Chiefs ever again. That damn stretch of Interstate-29 still takes peoples lives every year. It's so sad. We had an awesome Defense in the 90's with the likes of Derrick Thomas, Neil Smith, Deron Cherry, Albert Lewis and many others. DT made a bunch of guys wake up on Monday morning reaching for those pain killers. RIP# 58. We here in KC still remember you, and your jersey is still worn by the true die hard fans at No. 1 Arrowhead Drive. Kansas City, MO.
Left us way too soon. If only he had buckled up. The Chiefs have always been one of my favorite teams. I miss him to this day. One of the greatest players of all time. Also a terrific human being. May he rest in eternal peace.
Watching a documentary about his life last night, and he just seemed to be so down to earth, he didn't care about the pay check he only cared about spending to help others, that's why you see players now'a'days who can be so much more, but just think about getting that pay check after!
You are so correct! DERRICK THOMAS was a Very Generous man. ♡ DERRICK's accident happened 2 mls. from our home. It was eerie, & we didn't yet know that it was Derrick Thomas...I remember like it was yesterday. Some info on Wikipedia/ Derrick Thomas' accident are incorrect. His accident occurred on I-29 while on his way to KCI (Airport). Sadly & ironically, that SAME icy snowstorm caused a pile-up, claiming 10 lives, SAME stretch of I-29, near THOMAS' accident, as well. See? Just eerie...sad...dark day in KC. My Husband knew DERRICK. They became friends after working many of DERRICK's Charity Events together. DERRICK gave SO MUCH & touched, literally Changed, so many lives in a Positive Way! His Smile just Lit Up the Room! I'm going to cry! Sorry. We miss him so much. We STILL wonder Why they FLEW him to FL., when KU MED is a state of the art, excellent med center, AND just down the hwy. All we thought was, "He was Alive in KC,...& Died in FL??" Sorry, just reliving it. DERRICK said, "People don't remember your entire career. They remember how it ends." Blessed to know him, & share his Spirit of Giving! Thank you for sharing the FACTS about DERRICK & his GENEROSITY! May you be Blessed in the way DERRICK THOMAS Generously lived his life! X♡
@Richard Bruce "You got that right, he was so explosive off the corner and went in so low and fast he was very hard to contain, let alone get a block on him of some kind." Had he only been seatbelted in on that icy morning on I-29.
Derrick Vincent Thomas has been gone for 22 years since he died in 2000 and I think it's just a shame that we lost him in the 2000's and RIP to the man himself Derrick Vincent Thomas 1967-2000 #58 Kansas City Chiefs
As a raiders fan, I remember towards the end of his career, which is when I started watching football religiously in 1998. The next year, Derrick Thomas's teammate, Rich Gannon, went to the Raiders. Man I hated when we went against Derrick Thomas, but at the same time, loved watching him play. he was the 2nd best Pass Rusher in the 90s next to Reggie White. He consistently handed our asses on a platter and the platter was bent. But what a specimen. But I loved it when KC played Denver because I loved it when he sacked Elway. Much respect from a Raider fan! RIP DT!
I watched that game live when it happened and DT was simply amazing that day .... I"m a Seahawks fan and could only tip my hat to what he was doing .... I liked how the game ended though ...LOL ... I miss DT and I wish he was still with us .... GREAT player and seemed like a really good guy.... god bless you bro.... still miss seeing ya play ..
That's just one of his records that will probably never be broken. His other record that will never be broken is the 27 sacks he had in one season in college. That's just insane.
One of two people John Elway hated from KC. The other, Deron Cherry who intercepted Elway more times than any other player. Derrick's number 58 was retired in 2009 joining 9 others who have had thier numbers retired in KC.
As a pass rusher he was the closest thing I ever saw to Lawrence Taylor. In fact I would say Thomas's first step was even quicker, though he wasn't nearly as strong.
funny you say that - Von Miller wears 58 because of DT. that was his favorite player. mine too - u know what, after reading this and seeing VM58 - if he keeps this pace - he could be mentioned in the same breath - but as you mentioned - he definitely has a long way to go.
If Derrick Thomas would have worn his seat belt and didn't weave and speed through traffic in the SNOW would not have been thrown from the car which resulted from his paralyzed from the waist down. Interesting fact, the other passenger who did wear his seatbelt was unharmed. That goes to show you why you need seatbelts because all of this could of been prevented.
when, I was coming out of high school, Alabama was looking for the next Cornelius Bennett and Derrick Thomas. Coach Gene Stalling was their at the time. I visited the University in 1989. I was so excited when Antonio London was explaining to me wby i should choose Alabama. I was full of myself. People were asking me, where are you going to school. I was saying Alabama! What, I didn't know was that... high school coaches have so much power in your future especially back then. There was no hudl accounts, twitter, all the things kids have today. During those times there were letters. I had a big trash bag full of letters from schools around the country. Needless say, I went to Alabama State and became depressed. I left and went to work at Russell Corporation. I later chose to go to Jacksonville State thinking it was best for me to walk on there. Coach Ross talked to me about coming to Alabama. At the time, I thought, i was making the right decision as far as playing football was concerned. I turned out to be the wrong decision. I look at his playmaking ability and wonder what could have been.
in most cases coaches want kids to play that they recruit. I t does not matter what kind of athlete you are. So, I became depressed again and just wanted to finish school and finish my football career. Don't trust your coaches go get it on your own.
If he didn't pass away far too young he would have been the greatest of all-time. That didn't happen though but he was a star when he played like few others ever have.
we'd be able to finally rebuild our O-line giving our qb time to make a throw and a hole for our RB to find... Cassel has a huge task ahead of him... thigpen could run for his life back there.
also, bill beilechick and some of moss's former teammates say he has a work ethic like nobody they've ever seen. everybody just likes to say he's lazy because they can't accept that somebody might be better than their beloved jerry rice
Montana and Young where in a system (west coast Off.) get the ball out quick to the WR - Rice ran all the routes - 1-9 he had no WR to teach him - he taught others. Cris Taught Randy how to be a pro - Cris had skeletons in his closet from Philly and did not want that to happen to Randy. Randy was arigent and in the beginning wanted nothing to do with Cris as a teacher. He later found out how important it was to shut-up and listen. He was a major distration in Oakland (cont'd)
the team is to blame for that - even Rich Gannon has said the disfunsion has always been there. It is not all Randy fault. But when you are surrounded with the skills that he had -anyone is going to look better. and yes, Jerry had skill around him -but he made the catches 5-9 yards down field and out ran everyone and never took plays of blocking the corner or Safety covering him though the play almost as well as Hines Ward did. Calvin Johnson is the only player that may compare someday.
That's actually not true. If you take LT's 2 through his eleventh year (so ten seasons) and DT's first ten years (his eleventh being his worst) they have the exact same number of sacks. I realize that tackles aren't an officially recorded stat but by any count LT got more through that same stretch. LT was much better at pass coverage and was much more of an all around threat. I loved DT but there is just no good argument that he was better than LT. And there are others above DT besides LT.
@jdlund That what makes him the best Linebacker, Derrick Thomas and Kevin Green were both better pass rushers than L.T. But number 56 is the best linebacker. But if you get a great offensive Linemen on LT, you stop him unlike Derrick Thomas and mabe LT.
No they weren't. Watch the tapes. Lawrence Taylor was DPOY in his ROOKIE year. He also bagged DPOY in his 2nd season as well. Who else has done that? Please stop smoking narcotics.
I will always consider DT my favorite player - I am not easily publily sad - but I acctually cried the day he died. BUT, LT was the 3rd best player ever after Jim Brown (2nd) and Jerry Rice (1st). sorry my man - I agree in my heart but not in my head
agreed with the rbs. but you must be crazy if you think moss shit the bed in oakland. and if we're going to talk about how other players helped randy out, how about joe montana and steve young helping jerry out?? I think jerry might have benefited just a little but by having 2 HOF qb's throwing the ball to him. Who did moss have besides Brady for 2 seasons? And he didn't piss anything away with NE. He set the single season td record. and "i play when i want to" was taking way out of context.
@budeyegreenhabits, that is absolutely irrelevant. Players are expected to say shit like that. It's called socially acceptable modesty. Of course Jordan isn't going to say he was the best basketball player ever. Although he might because he's really arrogant, but even he would probably try to be like 'oh so and so was amazing...' That's what he's suppose to say. But he still was the GOAT, period. Same thing with LT. He's just giving the politically correct answer. It means nothing.
i don't understand how you can put anthony munoz ahead of dick lane. even if anthony is the best o-lineman ever, there's no way a lineman can have as much impact on a game as a corner who shuts down half the field so the quarterbacks are scared to even throw to his side. And yea, I was shocked that the list didn't have DT
the top 100 was a JOKE!! - every true football fan knows it - the only thing they got right was the top 3 - listen, barry is my favorite rb - his style is second to none. it is debateable who is better BS or JB - but i can tell you this, if you do not put OJ simpson, Gayle S., Walter Payton, right behind them U R the one that needs to learn the game. @ellohotto, bullshit. LT was a better pass rusher. No linebacker had ever more re-defined the position than LT. No linebacker ever forced opposing teams to change their entire offense to account for him like LT. I really do like Thomas. I like DT much better as a human being. Frankly LT is a piece of shit as a human being. But regardless LT was still a better player than DT. I would agree with Butkus being number 1 all time though.
He was my favorite player and I met him. Great guy, met him at Diamond Joes. He signed a napkin for me wich I have framed. I still think he was a BUM off the field. He has children that he didn't take care of (HIS OWN). He Would have been a hall of fame player if he hadn't died.
Derrick is finally a hall of famer! Long overdue and its really about as bittersweet as it gets.
What a touching ceremony at the Pro Football HOF. Derrick Thomas was an amazing player on the field and an amazing person off the field..GOD BLESS..R.I.P.

Stop your bullshitting. Thomas did NOT die at the scene of the accident.
I loved how he played. I met DT at a fan signing at Independence Center. He was a wonderful, pleasant person. There will never be another as loved by KC as DT!

Had the pleasure of playing alongside DT in high school South Miami Sr Class of 1985. Never thought I would be playing with a future HOF.
i tip my hat as a Broncos fan well done sir thomas u r a legend. hopefully our 58 will someday b a 58 deserving of the number
Derrick Thomas, was in the mold of Lawrence Taylor... He was simply a beast...
Derrick Thomas would've been the best in nfl history along side with Lawrence taylor. His life ended way too soon. Seat belts save lives! R.I.P. D.T

That guy was a total beast, and I am a Broncos fan.
R.I.P D.T.

imagine having a defense with Lt and dt wow
As much of a beast that was on the field, he was twice as nice off it. Met him twice when I was a kid, he was good to Chiefs fans.
Beast on the field, a saint off the field.
Such a handsome gentleman. I met him in 1992. Whiteman AFB.
RIP legend
dam him and montana made me kc fans, wish he was still around
One of two people John Elway hated from KC. The other, Deron Cherry who intercepted Elway more times than any other player. Derrick's number 58 was retired in 2009 joining 9 others who have had thier numbers retired in KC.
Dt and deron cherry made this lil girl with her daddy a fan
November 16, 1998 Vs Broncos...Classic
As a pass rusher he was the closest thing I ever saw to Lawrence Taylor. In fact I would say Thomas's first step was even quicker, though he wasn't nearly as strong.
Just imagine him with Fujita and Johnson, on that Defense damn. R.I.P. Derrick.

RIP Derrick Thomas...heck of a catch by Stevie Largent on the throw from Kreig by the way.
his speed was crazy
If Derrick Thomas would have worn his seat belt and didn't weave and speed through traffic in the SNOW would not have been thrown from the car which resulted from his paralyzed from the waist down. Interesting fact, the other passenger who did wear his seatbelt was unharmed. That goes to show you why you need seatbelts because all of this could of been prevented.
nothing better than seeing elway in the dirt!
Great video!!!

Derrick Thomas💪
@gridironmonster Yes he loved kids. . . He did alot for the community here in kansas city!
SUPER HALL OF FAMER
wow. derrick thomas tackles barry sanders. a meeting of 2 all-time greats on opposite sides of the ball who were drafted in the same year. RIP DT
DT one of the best ever, gone way too soon.
If he just wore his seatbelt he wouldn't have been paralyzed and he would been alive today.
Yeah, Aldon has been reminding me more of LT than DT lately. Hope he can get through it, cause he has potential to be incredible.
The Goat
He is going in this year.
Rip dt. My boy Aldon smith reminds me of u.
If he didn't pass away far too young he would have been the greatest of all-time. That didn't happen though but he was a star when he played like few others ever have.
He was great but greatest of all time? That's really pushing it.
we'd be able to finally rebuild our O-line giving our qb time to make a throw and a hole for our RB to find... Cassel has a huge task ahead of him... thigpen could run for his life back there.
The worlds gonna know you're name yeh you jerseys in the hall of fame
The man
I thought the same thing!! And Terrell Owens looks like Wes Welker
if he didn't die we would have probobly won a superbowl. every year with him we made the playoffs
also, bill beilechick and some of moss's former teammates say he has a work ethic like nobody they've ever seen. everybody just likes to say he's lazy because they can't accept that somebody might be better than their beloved jerry rice
The only "dislike" of this video is probably Shannon Sharpe. Stunad! GO CHIEFS!!! XXX♡♡♡
Msflamingo2008 My guess is it was Elway 🤣
agreed DTRIP - best Chief ever!!
He should have worn that seatbelt! Great guy.
@byff23 Just think about poor Dave Krieg. He probably has to see a shrink to this day.
Montana and Young where in a system (west coast Off.) get the ball out quick to the WR - Rice ran all the routes - 1-9 he had no WR to teach him - he taught others. Who else would you place above Derrick Thomas? I'd put Andre Tippett above DT for his '84 and '85 seasons where he bagged 35 total sacks.
His career wasn't even over... He could of kept playing for a longer time if he wore a seat belt. Stupid mistakes can kill you.
@TheMavenFrankeus Fuck the seatbelt, don't drive 80 miles an hour on ice.
Alabama Kansas missippii
One dimensional player
Roll Tide!
@h3ll6ate Well pretty much like sneakers. Cleats are no good on the original astro-turf. Which KC replaced with grass in 1991.
I love watching Elway get sacked!
He killed the Chiefs so much...had to look for bright spots in those games.
I will always consider DT my favorite player - I am not easily publily sad - but I acctually cried the day he died. BUT, LT was the 3rd best player ever after Jim Brown (2nd) and Jerry Rice (1st). sorry my man - I agree in my heart but not in my head

u mean d ware reminds u of DT?
dude, at 2:10 , are they wearing sneakers?
@Novinte Von Miller is a beast, but Derrick Thomas level? That's not something he can be given without even one snap in the pros.
Roll Tide!!!!!!
i don't understand how you can put anthony munoz ahead of dick lane. even if anthony is the best o-lineman ever, there's no way a lineman can have as much impact on a game as a corner who shuts down half the field so the quarterbacks are scared to even throw to his side. And yea, I was shocked that the list didn't have DT
you think kanye west is related to him?... they look alike o_0
the top 100 was a JOKE!! DT was my favorite player all-time - I am fully aware of how dominate he was - it is a true shame he was not in a real top 100 list. (cont'd)
If he had lived longer, LT would be #2
Wrong actually, even if you're going by just sack numbers.
Butkus No. 1 all-time? Please stop smoking narcotics.
Von Miller is as Classy.
Irony he drove off in a car which later led to him dying from injuries from a car accident.
if he would only had weared seat belt. or whatever it is called. he migth have been alive like the other passenger
Not just that, he shouldn't have been speeding in the storm to begin with.
He was my favorite player and I met him. Great guy, met him at Diamond Joes. He signed a napkin for me wich I have framed. I still think he was a BUM off the field. He has children that he didn't take care of (HIS OWN). He Would have been a hall of fame player if he hadn't died.
i think he finished only 6 or 7 sacks behind LT...in fewer games
That is if you're willing to believe that LT didn't record any sack in his rookie season just because it wasn't considered official until 1982.
