    I loved the Magyk series. I remember thinking the ending was just ok and then I reread them while I was pregnant and enjoyed them so much more. You should definitely read them with your kid. He’d like them.
    I remember stopping Dragonwatch and then going back later on someone’s recommendation. It’s been awhile, but I remember it getting better and liking it in the end.

      Oh good! I’ve been looking for something good to read with him. I liked the first one okay but remember nothing about it. Unfortunately I don’t actually own them haha. I’m glad DW gets better. I did read the third one all in one day, which might be why I got cranky at it. Too much at once.

    It has been awhile but I think you can just pick up the 5th Runelords book. I read 5 and 6 shortly after they released and recall they have very little to do with the first books. Maybe I should Google that but the books were not comparable to the first four IMO.

      That’s good to know! Maybe it’s why there felt like a gap in publication - he went a different direction! This is one of the few I liked well enough that I want to restart it for the experience. The author was my writing mentor, so I want to have a moment with it.

    I started the Sleeping Giants trilogy last month and just ended up reading all three books. A series has to be really special for me to want to read more than 3 books and even though I might stop reading it if it goes uninteresting. I gave up on the Throne of Glass series.

    I'm with you on the Worldbreaker series. I absolutely need to do a re-read of the first two books in order to complete the trilogy.
    Bloodsong is one of my favorite books ever, and while I didn't enjoy the next two books as much, it was still a good trilogy overall. I made the mistake of doing book one of his next trilogy about the dragons in audio format and it totally killed all momentum and I've never gone back to any of his books.
    The only other series that I would need to do a re-read on is the Wall of Night series by Helen Lowe. The first three books were so dang good, but book 3 was released in 2016 and she's still working on the last book in the series. That's just too long to try and remember all the details.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The dragon trilogy is one of my all-time favs, and yet I have heard from a few that the audiobook kind of wrecked the experience. I get along with Brand as a narrator, but he is kind of dry.
      With the Lowe books - at least you waiting almost long enough for the whole thing to be written! I'm trying to lean a little more towards starting completed series for that reason.

    • @ChromaTick360
      @ChromaTick360 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheObsessiveBookseller There was such a huge disconnect with me on the dragon trilogy, because the book itself was fascinating, but Brand's dry narration absolutely killed it for me. I need to just do a Kindle read of those books starting with book one again.
      I'm still going to have to re-read the first three Lowe books once she finally finishes the fourth one. It's such a good series though.
      I used to only start series that were finished, in fact I'd read the entire series at once and there is something really fulfilling about doing it that way.

    That is definitely a lot of series to restart. I would have to say, with perhaps a couple of exceptions for real standouts, I would just be refreshing my memory with summaries and carrying forward from there. In fact, that is what I will end up having to do in a few cases with series I have not read from in years.
    Of your top ten, Red Rising and Runelords are both in my TBR. I have not started either one. Someday I may get to Shadow of the Gods, but first I need to read The Faithful and the Fallen, which I already own, and then decide if I am going to continue with more of his books.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I might, MIGHT, go the conservative route and do summaries if I restart some of these, but mostly I just want to have a linear experience with them. Declaring them as needing to be restarted helped me simplify how many things I've got going on at once. I would imagine you don't have too terribly many outstanding series that are higher priority. You're really good at getting back to stuff, minus all of my bad influencing.
      As it happens, Shadow of the Gods isn't tied to Faithful at all, and it is an excellent intro to his writing... if you're inclined to go out of order! I've marked your interested ins to my tracker. :D

      @@TheObsessiveBookseller It's fun to do the buddy reads, so I'm okay with starting some series for those, especially if they end up being great and turn into series buddy reads.
      As far as Shadow of the Gods goes, sure, why not? Ignore the 7 Gwynn books I already own and buy a new one to start a different series first? That's a great idea! Haha. Don't rule out the possibility. 🙂

    I literally flew through the Runelord series by David Farland. However, when I first started reading the series, by book 3 (Wizardborn), I was so close to calling it quits. I just couldn't connect with the story. I am so glad I gave the fourth book a chance, because I ended up getting hooked on it! The series really grew on me. The sad part about it, while I was on book 8 (Chaosbound), I started looking everywhere for the last book and just couldn't find it. That's when I found out that the author had passed away, and I was really bummed.

    Great topic, hope you are well?
    I have started so many series, and not completed due to not liking the first book, or getting sidetracked with other books. I have many of these on my TBR or partially read series, LOl. So I am in the same position as you. There are also several i purchased and never started. I at least have read all the Anthony Ryan books, get to it, LOL. I also collected the entire Seven Swords series to date and only read book one, not sure if it's done.
    For me the worst offenses are Wheel of Time, read to Volume 8 and stopped, read book one twice. The Expanse read the first six, have to go back again and reread without the aid of the aid of the show; and lastly, The Malazan, read book one and book two twice, I eventually have to push thru.

    Throne of Glass I'm hoping to finish by the end of the year. The youth services manager at my library said Kingdom of Ash is her all time favorite book so I gotta read it so I can talk with her about it. lol I only started this series last year so it's all still fresh.

    I vaguely recall reading wolfblade of that after Medalon and enjoying it; but given that was at release hard to say. I think I still have those :) Reading series can be interesting. Some work great if you read them all together and others definitely need time between them. I hadn't finished Maas Throne series either; maybe I will, maybe I won't :) I do plan to reread Elvenbane, supposedly a fourth book was slated and Lackey has rights back, but haven't seen anything beyond that. I have Poison Study on my agenda to do a reread with. I really enjoyed Ann Aguirre's Corine Solomon series and it did not out stay it's welcome being only 5 books. I am finishing off my what the hell have I read over the last 30 years list and then I'll start looking at authors and series that I want to read backlist or finish off because I do drift away from a lot of series when they go on forever.

  • @adrianmcmahon5731
    @adrianmcmahon5731 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's not really inefficiency that's the issue. You can't really force yourself to read a series of books back to back and exclude everything else while you do it as that makes the reading more like a chore rather than pleasurable. With your existing reading commitments on top you'll never get ahead of yourself and you'll forever be chasing an unattainable goal. What I generally do with series is I read them as I fancy reading the next one unless I'm seriously hooked and can't stop myself going "just one more", even if there are big time gaps between reading each one if I like a series enough I'll usually go back and read them through again a year or two later and get so much more from them on the second read process as it's more like comfort reading on the second go around. It's the same for me with rewatching films and TV shows I pick up things I missed the first time through as I was paying attention to another aspect of a scene first time but pick up background things and nuances that I overlooked initially.
    Go with what you want to read or are in the mood for, follow your wandering desire of what do I fancy reading next more or you could risk burning out the joy of reading for a while.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I really love your approach to this! I definitely don’t want to be so regimented that reading feels like a chore. On the flip side, I have so many amazing series that I just want to read “just one more” on but feel trapped by the shear quantity going at once. And I also have this fierce desire to nestle in with just a couple of things and be okay with that for a while (mostly to simplify). The happy medium might be reducing down from the 60 or so I have open to just 5-10. That way I can follow my moods, but it won’t be years and years between getting back to things. I need to screenshot your comment to remind me of the balance. Reading should always be fun!

    • @adrianmcmahon5731
      @adrianmcmahon5731 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheObsessiveBookseller if you think of it a certain way it's really a minimalist approach to reading. Reducing down to the most essential things first and foremost and then adding back in choice items to add more colour to life. For a long time I was very much a completionist / book hoarder and just "had" to do everything a certain way and after a while (actually more like years) I got so fatigued by always trying to get ahead of what I thought I should be doing. I could spend hours at a time reading as a kid and teenager but finding the time when you've got work and then later on family and relationship commitments something just had to give and for a while I lost all the pleasure from reading. It really does make a difference understanding the why of the way we do things. I think you and I definitely seem to share very strong traits of striving for perfectionism (in my case in all aspects of my life) and I really ended up suffering because of what I thought my standards should be. Sometimes you've got to think "f*** it, that's good enough" a bit more and actually enjoy what you're doing while still making an 80% plus job of the most important things. Life definitely is a continuous learning process, you're never too old to learn to adapt to changing conditions and change things around as you need to so the balance always works out with every spinning plate you're trying to keep up in the air.

    • @TheObsessiveBookseller
      @TheObsessiveBookseller  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@adrianmcmahon5731 That's a great way to look at it! I'm on a very similar journey of trying to let go of perfectionism and make my choices based on intentionality rather than some arbitrary drive. I've identified that I have too many spinning plates going at once and am fiercely craving a more simplified existence where I say no to more things (especially the things I put on myself without anyone else's help!) to free myself up to focus on the select few things I deemed are most important. Oliver Burkman's Four Thousand Weeks book really helped put my priorities into perspective in that regard and I've been really rolling with it. We're two peas in a pod. My perfectionism has long cost me a lot of pleasures out of life.
