I've stayed overnight the day before my next flight for the last two trips. I had a bad experience with missing a connecting flight and missed out on a day of my holiday at my final destination.

Do you have any thoughts on what to do if the airline's website does not offer anything other than a connection time you feel is too short? In our case, we live in a smaller center with multiple flights to the nearby hub, but the airline only offers short connections even though there may be only one or two onward flights daily to our destination.

Good question! If none of the airlines out of your home airport offers a connection time that you are comfortable with then I would consider driving to another airport to get better flight options. I am assuming that if you were to book one of those flights with the short connection and you were to miss it, it would be hours until you could catch the next flight which isn't ideal. Driving to the another airport might eliminate that possibility and you may even find direct flights from there. If driving isn't an option for you then I would consider booking two separate flights on different airlines. Obviously, there's a risk in doing that and if you have to check a bag you will need a longer layover to go through the process of rechecking a bag but it might be worth the risk and hassle in order to get a longer layover. I hope that helps.

Always check the website of the transit airport. Check which gates your flights regularly use on sites such as FlightAware. That way, you will be in a better position to judge the time it will take to get between the two gates. You may also find useful videos on TH-cam. Things could still go wrong, but they are less likely to.

I always look for a minimum of two hours between flights, 2.5 hours if I know that I will need to go through security and immigration (USA) before getting to the second flight.

Hi Ben! Thank you for the insightful videos. I found cheap tickets from Sao Paulo to LAX with an early evening connecting flight between EWR and LAX. The layover is 105 minutes and both flights are on the same ticket, both with United. I won't check any bags. Do you think I can go through immigration (I'm Brazilian) and still make the connection?

It tends to be a little busier in the early evening because it's when a lot of international flights arrive from Europe but 105 minutes should be enough time to make it through customs and immigration.

That doesn't make sense because a carry on doesn't require check in. That's also not realistic for some of us traveling internationally can require taking more clothes and what not.
