  • Drone video of Sanford Dam hours before it's unfortunate demise, and what it looks like 6 months later in November, 2020.
    I incorrectly stated that edensville failed at about 8pm, but that is incorrect. According to reports, the embankment of edensville dam failed about 5:30pm.

    Yes, the siren went off ONLY...when the west burm was being fully breached. It lasted as long as its regular monthly test. As a resident standing next to the curve by the "Old" part of the cemetary, my comment to a person next to me was, "Thier a little late with that!" Furthermore, the boat that was caught on the bouy line in front of the dam went through one of the spillway gates, front end first, leaving it's own statement of "Thooomph!" My remark was, "That was a waste of a good long shaft motor!" I hope this information helps. The debris piled up sometime through the night. Not before the breach.

    Stunning video shots, as usual. But I have to say, the music kind of gave me a headache. 😒

      @@jacuzzibusguy Or just let the video speak for itself without sound. It's not necessary, or even desirable for this sort of content to have a continuous soundtrack.

    Sanford dam overtopped and eroded only after its concrete spillway became clogged with debris from the failure of Wixom's-dam. If this debris had been intercepted farther upstream from the Sanford spillway, I doubt if Sanford dam would have overtopped, even with the extra water from Wixom. This, of course, is hard to prove after its erosion-collapse. Furthermore, effecting such a timely intervention would have required considerable vision, effort, courage, and sufficiently strong cables and anchor-points far enough upstream from the spillway. Unfortunately, such vision and initiative appears to have been absent while the debris was heading down toward Sanford lake. The most cost-effective location for this interception cable would have been sufficiently downstream from the entrance to Sanford lake, where flow-rates would have been slow enough to safely install and anchor the interception cable before the debris arrived.

    Mistakes happen, but we need to learn from it, in order to prevent it from happening again. This time they have to fund cement dam, instead of dirt, which was initially a dumb idea considering that dirt can erode over time.

    Government did a good job? You know they were warned 5 years prior about the dams faults. This could have been avoided all together.

    It would be nice to see how it originally was on a regular day before flooding where the rivers originally went and how they flowed

      Agreed.
      I don’t live near this part of Michigan and never got any footage of the dam when things were normal.

      @Margo Vogel Do you mean before they installed the dams? That was done a long time ago. If you mean what the lakes looked like, you can probably find that here on TH-cam somewhere. There is another channel that has covered these failures in depth. It’s Jordan Mowbray and he’s done a fantastic job.

    Did they tear the dam down?

    • @jacuzzibusguy
      @jacuzzibusguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. A flood came and destroyed the earthen part of the dam last spring and left a pile of debris.
