Josef Boroff I think that element of the show will make more sense when GRRM completes the story. I strongly suspect that story beat is one of the long-range notes he provided, and they simply didn't get how to do it well. Like how their "night king" character seems to be a misinterpretation of Melissandre's Great Other. Incidentally, I suspect that storyline is actually Book Euron - a possible earlier student of Bloodraven's intent on becoming an evil god - and this also makes more sense for Arya killing him as killing gods might just be within the House of Black and White's remit.

The thing is, Catelyn died at the red wedding along with Robb and more. Is Brienne's oath still binding even after Catelyn's death? Like, she practically came back to life and lost most of her compassion, becoming Stoneheart. In some way, Brienne could end up breaking her oath by killing an already undead Catelyn(a fire wight) or not, as she is just a shade of who she once was. Between Brienne and Jaime, he broke his oath by killing king Aerys to save millions of lives, and she would fulfill half of her promise to Cat by delivering Jaime to kings landing and not being able to find Sansa anywhere. Yeah, It's really up to Brienne to decide if she wants to keep her promise because the Catelyn she knew died and not to an undead. In sum, it's really about perspective.
I have up until now, thought - naively, one might add - that Jaime will live the upcoming meeting with Lady Stoneheart but your video has made me remember that this is George RR Martin and that he has a realistic take on humanity and nuance, grey characters, the heart in conflict with itself and Tragedy. Imagine if after watching Ser Jaime begin to develop as a character, the hint of 'Goldenhand the Just' at the back of our minds and the upcoming good Ser Jaime will do, that after all of that he is slain by Lady Stoneheart. There will be no denying how much Catelyn sucks then. Either way, if he fulfills his Goldenhand path or if it is brutally cut short, it would send a powerful message either way and that is a true testament to George's writing. The thing I love about watching y'alls videos is that you remind me of all the little details that slipped my mind while reading. I remember the Pia story, but forgot about Qubyrn's role in it and that Bonifer was in love with Rhealla. All these wonderful threads tying everything together.
I always saw Jamie as never a bad person turning good. He always was, there was just 2 masks, Jamie and the kingslayer. He puts up the kingslayer after his greatest act. After his time with Brienne he dips into Jamie but tries to place back on the kingslayer mask only to find it being difficult

Jaime has always been a good man with a witty personality and sarcastic remarks, its just that Cersei's hold on him that is making him unable to become the man he always meant to be. He was there for Tyrion most of the time despite Tywin's and Cersei's hatred of the former, and he still feels guilty when he was unable to protect Rhaegar's wife and children. You know it doesnt surprise me that he might have thought of really killing his father and Robert as well as Gregor Clegane and Amory Lorch, when Princess Elia and her children's bodies where presented covered by Lannister cloaks.
Imagine Jamie under different circumstances, he truly could have become one of the greatest knights of the Kings Guard. The Mad King made him become what he never imagined himself being. If things were different and he did have the chance to emulate Arthur Dyane and his “skill” with a sword he would have become a Hero instead of the King Slayer.

I just read a "conversation" Jaime had with Ilyn Payne. On the return trip from Winterfell, Cersei wanted Arya's hand cut off for striking Joffrey and Arya had been lucky that Jaime had not been the one to find her.

Funny. I was just thinking about this yesterday. Crippling and wheter Bran was the right king, and Jaime. Crippling is a bit of a theme and maybe we will get seven cripples on the vein of Jaime the warrior, Bran the stranger etc. At least the cripples might be important. Why cripple a man in a story? Everyone said GRR Martin was a feminist, and therefore Dany would win the throne...... And then I started thinking about Bran and whether he should win the throne, and no he should not. But who has been foreshadowed to sit on the throne, and has been crippled? Jaime, and he might make a good king, because he should be just, having had many ups and downs.
Anyone else ever notice how the 1st time we see Jaime's entry in the white book starts on the right hand page; yet when Brianne writes in it after he dies his page begins on the left hand side? This is just plain annoying. You'd think they'd only need 1 set piece for a book yet it seems they made multiple and they weren't even the same! Hell, the tv show just pissed me off....

Why didn't we get a POETIC CINEMA scene in the show where Jaime burns Cersei's "love" letter to him? I swear D&D don't understand the characters at their most basic level. His story is a lesson. When he acted for the sake of others, he did terrible things. When he acted to follow his morality, he became someone to look after. He finally became what he always dreamed, the sword of the morning. Not the men or the fighter, but the brightness of the sword.
I mean, yeah, Catelyn does suck. I think that's already settled. But in this case if I were her I'd probably believe Jamie had been involved in or at least complicit in the Red Wedding too. Jamie Lannister DID send his "regards", after all. Those aren't the last words Catelyn hears before her death, but they're pretty close. Obviously we as an audience know Jamie didn't have anything to do with planning it and there's no real reason to believe he even knew about it, but that's from our perspective. Great video as always. I feel like this is one of the biggest ways in which the book is better than the show even if we're totally ignoring the seasons that include non-book content. Why on earth did the show decide to keep Jamie in Cersei's clutches for a further 3 seasons? As someone who read the books only after watching seasons 1-7, it was such a wonderful surprise to see this amazing character arc that the showrunners just decided wasn't very important to include until they tried to shoe-horn it in during the first couple of episodes of season 8.
Yeah I also started the books after 7th season and it's still beyond me why they held his redemption arc back for so long to shoe horn it in and then just destroy it. At this point they should have just make him a cartoon villain like the rest in s8

I wonder how different Cersei would be had Joanna lived. Jamie still dreams about his mother and I get the impression he loved his mom like most boys do. I think Jamie takes after Joanna more than Tywin. I also think had Joanna lived Tyrion would have been loved in a way that wouldn’t have led him to believe Tywin’s lie about Tysha. But it’s Cersei I don’t know how different she may had been if her mother lived. I think Joanna would possibly at least tried to curve the worst of Cersei. Or give her a strong woman roll model that would probably help her constant hate of her own gender.
Best character I’ve ever read. I’ve never hated someone and then slowly began to love them until I felt real pity for them and wanted them to succeed, as an FU to everyone if nothing else. Not a bad man, he just never had a good choice to make. Every situation is between what is right and what is “honorable”, or good for his house and he usually makes the right choice, rather than the other two. He’s the opposite of Ned, and I love that about him. If dead Cat kills him, I’ll never forgive Martin. He needs to die saving Bran Stark. That will complete his arc.
Some years ago I think I heard you two talking about Catelyn and how messed up she was. It was the chapter where she and Roderick encounter Tyrion at that inn or tavern. Before the fateful decision she had the right of it to some degree I thought, to just leave him be but then later on turned around and had the man 'arrested'. Thus causing a terrible war. As I was getting more into the lore and world of Ice and Fire I came across the dragon glass candles and wondered how much of a role they actually played in the overall story. I realized they were kind of moot around the time of the last book and I wondered why. The Three Eyed Raven. The most powerful being in the whole of the story. This guy can whisper to and influence and guide Bran to basically come to him and surrender his body to him. And as Bran can possess Hodor, Bloodraven can do pretty much the same to anyone in the world. So in his quest to sit the Iron Throne he uses the Starks and the Lannisters to set things in motion that would eventually allow him to rule the 6 or 5 kingdoms or whatever's left by the end of it. I say all that to say: I think Rivers was flying all over the place getting into people's heads and making them to weird wonky things that would set certain events in motion to bring about certain conclusions. Catelyn is literally mad with grief over he son's accident, but all those contradictory decisions and actions she makes - I think - come from him. So when you brought up the villainous voice in the audio book that cinched it for me. Bloodraven is one of the many players of the game and he's of course been playing for a long time. He's a main character that's been out of the spotlight for many a years prior to the Stark Lannister war and through it all he, of all characters on the board ends up winning by stealing the body of a little boy and becoming king of the Realm.
One thing I hate about rereading the books is having to watch this character I've come to love and care about do despicable things. But it's always worth it. I think if George wanted he could have made us like Joffrey. Instead, he was killed at his own wedding by, like, 14 people.
I really doubt Jamie will ever get the in universe recognition he deserves for his character change despite how much I want to see it. George seems insistent on letting us see how often the majority of people mistake good for evil. Aka Tyrion's whole story.
Pretty sure he'll live and join the Brotherhood Without Banners to avenge the Red Wedding, but not for choice, but because Catelyn Stoneheart is the monument of all Jaime's sins!

Tywin wasn't in King's Landing when Barristan was dismissed...he was fighting the war, and he used it as one of the examples of stupidity that Cersei was doing there that required him to send Tyrion there to get things under control

Cersei's thoughts adwd chapter 65 Her imprisonment in The Great Sept of Baelor was her own Defiance of Duskendale. Reading chapter 65 of A Dance with Dragons I doubt she will ever get out from Red Keep in fear of the streets. During Tywin and Joannas wedding Mad Aerys took some liberties during the bedding ritual and said that it was a "great pity" that the first night tradition had been abolished. When Jaime and Cersei were born Aerys ordered Tywin to bring Cersei and Jaime to court when they were fit for travel. Showing that he really wanted to have Jaime as an heir to replace Rhaegar. And for the Tyrion Targaryen supporters out there: "Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak... but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I hope this series culminates in you analyzing his actions as part of a bigger picture. Yes, he is, on a personal level, attempting to be more just and change his image. The issue with this is that he is still in service to the Lannister regime, which is inherently unjust and technically illegitimate. Any action he does, just or not, furthers the advancement of the Lannister dynasty, which furthers more suffering of the realm. He also only kept his promise to Catelyn not to take up swords in semantics. Yes, he broke the siege without a single life lost and without fighting, but he still threatened Edmure, and he would have had to go through with that threat had Edmure not conceded, as he demonstrated when slapping the guy previously. For Jamie to truly become Golden Hand the Just, he would need to completely break his ties to the Lannisters, not just do his best to be just while working within and for an unjust system. That's not to say Jamie hasn't started an amazing redemption arc, just that hes still a long way to go to change his image from Kingslayer to Golden Hand the Just. That change requires more than just a personal change for Jamie, but would also have to make him change his political leanings and alliances as well.

Will you guys do a series of videos on Tyrion too? He is the only main Lannister player that you haven't put under the lens yet. I feel like the show gave him the Catelyn treatment, in the sense that they glossed over his more unsavoury aspects, and the general public's perception of a character got twisted again.

LordofBamfs - I think all Tywin’s kids are like him, but with Tyrion being the best politician, hence most like him. Jamie isn’t an awful politician, and even Cersei has her moments. Great video!

I mean, yeah, Catelyn does suck. I think that's already settled.
But in this case if I were her I'd probably believe Jamie had been involved in or at least complicit in the Red Wedding too. Jamie Lannister DID send his "regards", after all. Those aren't the last words Catelyn hears before her death, but they're pretty close. Obviously we as an audience know Jamie didn't have anything to do with planning it and there's no real reason to believe he even knew about it, but that's from our perspective.
Great video as always. I feel like this is one of the biggest ways in which the book is better than the show even if we're totally ignoring the seasons that include non-book content. Why on earth did the show decide to keep Jamie in Cersei's clutches for a further 3 seasons? As someone who read the books only after watching seasons 1-7, it was such a wonderful surprise to see this amazing character arc that the showrunners just decided wasn't very important to include until they tried to shoe-horn it in during the first couple of episodes of season 8.
Yeah I also started the books after 7th season and it's still beyond me why they held his redemption arc back for so long to shoe horn it in and then just destroy it. At this point they should have just make him a cartoon villain like the rest in s8

I wonder how different Cersei would be had Joanna lived. Jamie still dreams about his mother and I get the impression he loved his mom like most boys do. I think Jamie takes after Joanna more than Tywin. I also think had Joanna lived Tyrion would have been loved in a way that wouldn’t have led him to believe Tywin’s lie about Tysha. But it’s Cersei I don’t know how different she may had been if her mother lived. I think Joanna would possibly at least tried to curve the worst of Cersei. Or give her a strong woman roll model that would probably help her constant hate of her own gender.

Best character I’ve ever read. I’ve never hated someone and then slowly began to love them until I felt real pity for them and wanted them to succeed, as an FU to everyone if nothing else. Not a bad man, he just never had a good choice to make. Every situation is between what is right and what is “honorable”, or good for his house and he usually makes the right choice, rather than the other two. He’s the opposite of Ned, and I love that about him. If dead Cat kills him, I’ll never forgive Martin. He needs to die saving Bran Stark. That will complete his arc.
*GOLDENHAND THE JUST*
Some years ago I think I heard you two talking about Catelyn and how messed up she was. It was the chapter where she and Roderick encounter Tyrion at that inn or tavern. Before the fateful decision she had the right of it to some degree I thought, to just leave him be but then later on turned around and had the man 'arrested'. Thus causing a terrible war.
As I was getting more into the lore and world of Ice and Fire I came across the dragon glass candles and wondered how much of a role they actually played in the overall story. I realized they were kind of moot around the time of the last book and I wondered why.
The Three Eyed Raven. The most powerful being in the whole of the story. This guy can whisper to and influence and guide Bran to basically come to him and surrender his body to him. And as Bran can possess Hodor, Bloodraven can do pretty much the same to anyone in the world. So in his quest to sit the Iron Throne he uses the Starks and the Lannisters to set things in motion that would eventually allow him to rule the 6 or 5 kingdoms or whatever's left by the end of it.
I say all that to say: I think Rivers was flying all over the place getting into people's heads and making them to weird wonky things that would set certain events in motion to bring about certain conclusions. Catelyn is literally mad with grief over he son's accident, but all those contradictory decisions and actions she makes - I think - come from him. So when you brought up the villainous voice in the audio book that cinched it for me. Bloodraven is one of the many players of the game and he's of course been playing for a long time.
He's a main character that's been out of the spotlight for many a years prior to the Stark Lannister war and through it all he, of all characters on the board ends up winning by stealing the body of a little boy and becoming king of the Realm.

One thing I hate about rereading the books is having to watch this character I've come to love and care about do despicable things. But it's always worth it. I think if George wanted he could have made us like Joffrey. Instead, he was killed at his own wedding by, like, 14 people.
Or make Joffrey pass through the Reek treatment instead of Theon!

I really doubt Jamie will ever get the in universe recognition he deserves for his character change despite how much I want to see it. George seems insistent on letting us see how often the majority of people mistake good for evil. Aka Tyrion's whole story.

Tywin wasn't in King's Landing when Barristan was dismissed...he was fighting the war, and he used it as one of the examples of stupidity that Cersei was doing there that required him to send Tyrion there to get things under control
@@TheOrderoftheGreenhand I think if Jaime hadn't been a prisoner of Robb Stark and the Northern forces, instead of sending Tyrion back to King's Landing, Tywin would have sent Jaime instead. He only sent Tyrion has a last resort. As much as Tyrion's dwarfism and messing around with whores bothers the seven hells out of Tywin, Tyrion is his son. He cannot prove otherwise, so he has to work with what he has. That, and he needs Kevan with him.

Tbh I really understand why she wants to kill jaime. I mean Roose Bolton even said "Jaime Lannister sends his regard" when he stabbed Robb in the heart so it's quite likely that she thinks Jaime broke his vow and was one of the perpetrator of the Red Wedding.

I love hearing you guys speak about my Jaime. It makes me so happy. And this are the best chapters to cover. I hate we don't have any more chapters for you guys to keep going. But of course, if bitch Car Stonehart kills Jaime, and/ or Brienne, no one gets a say in defending how much she sucks. I was watching this TH-cam channel call the take yesterday cuz they did a series of great breaking bad videos, which were great and I notice they had some about GOT but mostly houses symbology and to my bad luck the first one that flashed to me were the Tullys I watch for like 5 minutes and click it off because fuck that. Catelyn is a horrible person, not family woman / perfect mother who is always right, go ask the order of the green hand. So that's how I unsubscribed a channel because I agree with you guys, lol.
I hope this series culminates in you analyzing his actions as part of a bigger picture. Yes, he is, on a personal level, attempting to be more just and change his image. The issue with this is that he is still in service to the Lannister regime, which is inherently unjust and technically illegitimate. Any action he does, just or not, furthers the advancement of the Lannister dynasty, which furthers more suffering of the realm. He also only kept his promise to Catelyn not to take up swords in semantics. Yes, he broke the siege without a single life lost and without fighting, but he still threatened Edmure, and he would have had to go through with that threat had Edmure not conceded, as he demonstrated when slapping the guy previously. For Jamie to truly become Golden Hand the Just, he would need to completely break his ties to the Lannisters, not just do his best to be just while working within and for an unjust system.
That's not to say Jamie hasn't started an amazing redemption arc, just that hes still a long way to go to change his image from Kingslayer to Golden Hand the Just. That change requires more than just a personal change for Jamie, but would also have to make him change his political leanings and alliances as well.
I'm pretty sure he'll join the BWB in order to redeem himself for good!
