He said it himself in the beginning light novels. He wanted to be normal. There is a reason why ayanokouji wanted that.

1. Ayanokoji doesn't have a healthy personality
2. Ayaonokoiji isn't even happy with that personality

Many people who sees Ayanokoji's personality from anime got so disillussioned with his quote from the last episode of 1st season, and saying things like "he's just like me" or ,"i wanna be like him"
But as a LN reader, i could confirm that Ayano himself sometimes stating so many contradicting things that you cant just scratch it off
Sometimes he just wanted friend, girlfriend, and another human interpersonal relationship, experience new things from new environment that he couldn't have coz of his dad, but here's the thing tho-
He grew up in the WR influences over 10 years of his life. He was teached to be a perfect human and treat other kids in WR only as a "competitor" so this persona deeply etched within him, and unfortunately for him, this "Koudo Ikusei" high school which he entered also valued people based on their merits, so guess what ? He once again force to acknowledged the inequality beetween human, hence the quotes he said in episode 1. The average scores that he made up in his time in school ? I forgot which vol it is, but that is also form of rebellion against his dad will.
So he clearly doesn't want to be like 'himself' now too, LN potrays this far better showing ayano also have some emotion in his face (albeit faint) which makes him far more human despite his upbringing.

Ayanokoji is a survivor of one of the toughest tortures out there (the white room) and despite he's born with a higher intellectual skill (apparently), we can be sure the white room instructors have tried to squeeze his capacity by pushing it to the limits anyway. At least he must have suffer physically. So it's understandable that his entire personality revolves around overcoming any challenge that is put in front of him by any means possible. Even for a genius like him, psychology is still something out of control and extremely influenced by environmental circumstances.
