My dad has told this story throughout my life: A man was convinced that he was a dead man. No matter what friends and family said to him to convince him that he was not a dead man walking around, he didn't believe them. One day, a friend of his asked him if dead men bleed. The man said, "Of course not." His friend then quickly cut him with a knife, making him bleed. The man looked at his wound and declared, "Whattaya know? Dead men DO bleed!" Flat-earthers remind me of that man.

For what it's worth, in the Llano Estacado region of the Texas Panhandle, the land is flat enough to actually see the curvature of the earth. Also, one of the most surreal things I have ever seen in my life was looking northeast through a arroyo from a Mesa top in northwest New Mexico and seeing the Rockies in the distant, BELOW the point of with I was standing. Looking down to see mountains is one of the most memorable things I have experienced in the outdoors.

You do realize that you can’t see the curvature of the Earth from any place on the planet? Neil degrasse Tyson says you have to be way above it to see it. But maybe u know more than him? He even says if you’re up in earth orbit, it still looks flat. But you people swear you see it on a plane and now you’re saying you seen it while u are standing, lol.

    • @EShirako
      @EShirako 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

@@Jusdippin78 Well, so this is what hurt my brain for a moment to try to imagine it. He's not saying he saw the 'horizon curving', like 'looking from a beach out to the ocean horizon'. He was saying that he saw the curvature in that, while up on a mesa (which is 'up a good bit' usually but not nearly all THAT tall), he could see in the gap of an arroyo "Mountains in the farther-distant horizon" that weren't visible from his normal ground-level (or even mesa-level?) height. Basically, he stood WAY up on a short mountain, and in that specific direction, the mountains appeared to be 'below his mesa's level' because the arroyo's valley allowed him to see much further down along its length.
Say his mesa was 2k feet tall. Say the arroyo was 1000 feet deep. He has an effective '3000 feet of altitude'. This let him see the horizon that he would have seen from that far end of the *arroyo*, which included seeing some of the Rockies being barely-high-enough to be visible in the distance. He was effectively looking from 3,000 feet of altitude, and 'barely seeing the mountains in the distance'...but that 'showed the horizon' too. The mountains were BARELY visible, barely peeking up in the distance...from BELOW WHERE HE WAS STANDING on a 2k altitude Mesa somewhere, and looking into the valley in the distance. The mountains aren't underground, right? So they are 'just as tall as ever', but he saw them as 'below him' when he was only a mere 2k feet up. The only way that works was to have had a line-of-sight that let him barely see them in the distance, and it happened to have that happen 'when looking out along this deep arroyo' that gave him additional 'effective altitude'. He saw the 'curvature of the earth' by LITERALLY seeing that a super-tall-thing was barely-visible in the distance, and not at all visible from ground-level where he was, which is only possible if he was seeing 'though that valley' and into the deeper distance, where the mountains were 'barely-visible from that further valley', which he was standing ABOVE.
From 2k up and looking through 1k depth of valley, his horizon would have been 70-ish miles out or whatever. That additional "height plus depth" showed him what he'd have seen from a mesa 3k tall; the bare beginnings of the Rockies being visible in the distance. He was seeing 'away'-horizon, not 'across-horizon'. The curvature left-to-right is hard to measure, but ahead isn't as hard in some VERY specific circumstances. Like, with +2 and -1k foot landscapes, and an 8k-foot tall mountain being barely visible in the distance. The barely-above-the-arroyo-bottom-horizon barely could see the mountain-tops, so thus he saw the mountains as "Below him" from that point of view. It's pretty wild...but also totally makes sense if you work out the math for it. That's why it blew my mind a bit.

Nowadays flat earthers just dropped the part when they try to convince you of anything. Now they just proclaim that if you think the earth is round you should prove it to them, and then refuse to engage with arguments presented. They stopped producing arguments, because it's just a theory, bro, no one knows how exactly the earth is flat, therefore it can't be proven, but it is anyway. Complete insanity. This brought a memory from my high school years. (Pre internet). There was a flyer on the bulletin board to go to a Flat Earth Society meeting. I thought it was a funny name for a group. I talked to my parents (dad an engineer and mom a biologist and Christian) about the flyer and was told it was an actual group that believed the earth was flat. I couldn’t believe with the math, science, space travel, photos etc that people still held this belief. Although I do love the artwork depicting the earth on the back of a sea turtle. Now as a geologist and a Christian I appreciate all the effort you have put out here on all the current “proofs”. I see so many people who just believe what is on the internet without proper research and analysis.

The flat earth advocate, a nutcase straight from the asylum, said the reason why astronauts and pilots THINK the earth is round is: Because of the shape of the windows/portals being round or oval. It's an optical illusion.
My son served on an Arle Burke destroyer. His ship never fell off during any deployment or cruises.
My husband served in the Army for over 24 years in Test Measurement Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE) aka calibration. They had to consider the rotation and shape of the earth while during their job. In other words, the earth is round.
My father-in-law was a Civil Engineer and surveyor. He said the earth was NOT flat.
If you're attending a flat earth church and getting saved based on the shape of the earth, you have totally misunderstood the Bible and salvation.

As a geographer, flat earth makes me cry because it would make my job so much easier. Taking something a round earth (which is not a perfect sphere but actually a oblate spheroid) and getting it to translate onto a two dimensional surface like a map is...rough. You can only realistically maintain a few of 5 properties (Area, Shape, Direction, Bearing, and Distance) truly accurately during the translation which is why different types of maps are used for different types of tasks. Ex. the Mercator projection we all know was made for navigational purposes and is not the best one to represent the globe as it maintains bearing but distorts shape/size but was chosen because its a nice rectangle and looked good on a wall.

      Yep.
For the FE conspiracy to be true, every politician of every nation that has existed since before the Romans is in it, plus all the top bureaucrats. OK, they're elite, so let's say they are indeed in. But then every revolutionary leader who overthrew their predecessors was actually in from the start, as was every outsider who won elections by fighting against the status quo. Let's not forget that in democracies the conspiracy has to be active at least at the level of ordinary members of parliament. Top agency directors and top brass in the respective armies must also be in the conspiracy, as well as every single member of the various space agencies around.
Let's see who else must be involved in this utterly useless, money-wasting conspiracy.
Every single professional astronomer who has ever lived, and basically every single backyard astronomer.
All civil engineers working on major projects, every single geodetic surveyor and geodesist without exception, and most land surveyors.
All aerospace, satellite navigation and telecommunications engineers, and most of the employees of aerospace and telecommunications companies, right down to the antenna guys who install satellite TV. Either that, or these companies put most of their people to useless work for no reason at all. Let's not forget the technical departments of all the broadcasting companies.
      Most HAM radio operators.
Every cartographer or geographer and anyone involved in the map-making business at any decision-making level.
Every intercontinental airline pilot, sea captain or air, sea or land navigator, and 99.9% of private pilots. Every shipping company, in fact.
All artillerymen and most snipers, but they work for the military, so we're not surprised. Also radio and radar operators, even civilian ones.
All meteorologists and most weathermen, as well as all oceanographers. Pretty much all geologists, volcanologists and seismologists. In fact, I'd include anyone with a degree or a hobby related to the Earth sciences.
And who knows how many millions of other people I have forgotten to mention.

Flying proves globe earth. I used to fly frequently between Singapore and Houston, roughly the other side of the world. There were 3 flight routes I tried. West via London and the Atlantic Ocean, East via Hong Kong and the Pacific Ocean, and North via Moscow and the Arctic Ocean.
All took roughly one day’s flying, so that fact that you can get to another location on earth in the same time by flying in 3 different directions is proof the world is a globe - have a look at these flight paths on a globe compared to a flat earth pizza! Flights easily prove the globe is real.
There was no route south over antarctica, as no stops to make any economic sense in antarctica…but flerfers will cherry pick this latter fact as proof of a flat earth conspiracy due to many reasons:
NASA bans the flight over antarctica as part of its great conspiracy
Plane will hit great ice wall and crash
Plane will fly over great ice wall but hit Perspex firmament and crash
Plane will fly over great ice wall straight into outer space to be sucked up in a great vacuum cleaner
NASA will shoot the flight down
NAZI UFOs from ancient alien U-boat bases on Antarctica will shoot the flight down
Giant electric penguins with laser guns for eyes will shoot the flight down
You cannot argue with flerfers - they are either grifting or too badly educated to change their minds

A moment that I experienced that really proved to me the Earth is round without anyone else having to tell me or show me data (not that I needed proving, I fully believe in science and it’s usefulness) was when I went on a cruise for the first time recently and as we went away from the shore where there were some tall buildings, I used my binoculars and over time saw the buildings appear to sink and go down as we went further away. By the time we were 37 miles out, I could still see the tips of the buildings with my binoculars. It was actually pretty fun

No matter what you think, if you think not-the-same, you're wrong. It's religion without the God. It's idiocy without the village to keep them. The simplest way to debunk a flat earth enthusiast is to ask them to predict the exact time of sunrise on a specific date in the future at a particular location, down to the minute. Flat Earth nonsense can't do it. The success of any scientific theory rests not only upon its logical explanation of events and carefully measured observations but also its predictive power. We know exactly when sunrise will occur on February 17th, 2038 in downtown Philadelphia using astronomical (NOT astrological) ephemerides tables. Flat Earth completely falls flat when it tries to predict future astronomical events and it's because that model just doesn't work. But guess what? The orbital mechanics of a spherical Earth revolving around the sun CAN result in accurate predictions. The validation of the timing and path of the recent solar eclipse across the central US is obvious proof of that.

A flat earth tiktok creator recommended a book called "Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy". So I did what his followers wouldn't do, I found it on the Internet Archive and read it. On page 58 I found this: "The Egyptians knew the true system of the universe. They were acquainted with the fact that the sun is the center of the solar system, and that the earth and other planets revolve about it, in fixed orbits. They knew that the earth is of a globular shape, and revolves on its own axis, thus producing day and night. They also knew of the revolution of the moon about the earth, and that the moon shines by the reflected light of the sun. They understood the calculation of eclipses; they were aware of the obliquity of the ecliptic, and that the milky-way is a collection of stars. They also seem to have understood the power of gravitation, and that the heavenly bodies are attracted to a center." I pointed this out to the creator in the comments. His reply was that this book shows how the media lies to cover up the true nature of the earth, which, as usual, made zero sense.

@@SamPedroCactuswhat "numbers"? The only videos I've ever seen of flat Earthers with their long distance photography are saying look there is clearly curvature but not as much as "the formula" says there should be, surely any curvature over water proves the earth is not flat.

    "Dude, write a fantasy novel"
Fun fact for those who haven't studied any of Tolkien (I assume many here probably have):
For the Elves, the world is flat, but it is round for Men and the other races. This is why 1) the elves can sail West to their lands and not come back around the earth, and 2) Legolas can see MUCH farther than any of the rest of the Fellowship, the horizon doesn't fall away on a curve, it goes on forever.

This isn’t true at all. When Arda was made during the Ainulindale, it was flat. At the end of the second age, Valinor (in Aman, the Undying Lands as people know them) was “hidden” by Illuvitar and the world was made round causing Númenor to be swallowed by the sea. The story is Tolkien’s take on the Atlantis story in many ways. Afterwards, the elves are guided along a special way to return to Valinor by ship sailing west after they have been granted permission to do so by the Valar after thousands of years of exile.
Idk where you heard about the elves seeing the world as flat and men round but it’s nowhere in Tolkien’s legendarium. The Silmarillion is a difficult read but worth it if you like Tolkien. I recommend it.

What I love about these flat earth presentations is:
When you read a science book for like, a kindergartener, it still feels like youre learning something even if you already know it.
Meanwhile, flat earth presentations always look like 240p/480p, 1995, back alley taboo tapes, and their books look like conspiracy theories (I mean they are, but you know- the text, font, layout, it all screams conspiracy)

I had this argument with my brother in law, we barely talk anymore, so it's actually sad.
I showed up one night to BS about politics and such, something fell and I made a joke about gravity, and he launched into this whole production about flat earth.
He trotted out so much of this, including Rowbotham and a bunch of "declassified Soviet science" which showed that the USSR launched rockets based on a "flat earth model."
I finally tried to get him on the math that Rowbotham used to "prove" the sun was a few thousand "statue miles" (something he thought was different from standard miles) and damnit all if I wasn't drunk that night I could have put the nail in that argument. See when Rowbutt made that measurement, he never confirmed that point "D" in his calculation (the right angle of the triangle) actually had the sun at 90 degrees - something which wouldn't even be possible at the location he described - he just said it would be without sending anyone to take the measurement. And if you take his measurements and correct for where the sun would actually be at 90 degrees on that line... guess what? It's within a few percent of what we measure the sun at with other, more accurate methods.

One of his favorite things to do is send us pictures at altitude of interesting things he flies over, beautiful sunsets, funny-shaped clouds, etc. I'd love to hear why my dad and the various copilots he flies with - from trans SJWs to MAGA Trumpers and every belief in between - and every passenger who flies with them all see and can photograph the Earth's curvature at elevation.

I mean, I find it so interesting that you basically say this is non-sense (flat earth) while warning the dude about the very same group that would logically be connected w lying about the shape of the earth as it benefits them....
I guess I'll give you same advice as you gave him, do some research about them and the church - because when you do your head wont hurt so much and you will understand how far their lies go and how/why....
Even tho you have warned about the Freemasons I think you clearly underestimate them.
