I produce, mix, master and market the music for my brother and as a producer I take 50% through distribution as the producer, but on the publisher side. I want to keep a catalog for other artists and promote their music and pitch to music supervisors or music libraries.
It's costs £400 to register as a publisher in the UK, It's currently something I'm trying to weigh up. It's probably not worth it it for me atm but I've been told I have to do it to get sync royalties, however not sure if that's entirely true. Ugh so confusing!
@@elharrop It would be nice if the host go through the comment section and answer a few questions. This one is a great point. In the US you cannot sign up to ASCAP without a publisher. BMI you do not need one but if you are a songwriter, ASCAP is a better fit.
@@hurtspublishing3906 same here im with bmi my advice for you is do your research on which publishing administration you want to sign up with then also signup with soundexchange as well
Exaclty! I dont want to get all dressed up with no where to go. I feel like alot of my peers are doing this or saying I should. And i dont know if its even neccisary.
Only if you find it important or necessary to your plan and or vision. There are a few shortcuts as well. You can sign with a publishing company and they can do everything for you...but you will give up ownership in exchange.
Songtrust only do publishing administration if that's all you looking for then i would signup but i would do my research before choosing songtrust I'm with songtrust its pretty easy to signup your music
Do realize Songtrust is the same company as *Downtown* that operates *Downtown Music Publishing?* You don't need to start a Publishing company because you're acutally entering in an *Admin Deal* with a real Publishing Company just like Kobalt. Starting your own Publishing is very very difficult and almost impossible to register with all the 40 plus different PROS and Mechanical Rights Organizations around the global. Registering with HFA directly is near impossible. Songtrust takes care of all that since they have direct relationships with them.
I like songtrust. I think its good for up and coming acts. I do believe that there are better options as you grow in your career but I've heard that SongTrust can make it worth while for growing acts to stay as well.
Short Answer: Depends on your business focus. It's a lot to run a publishing company. Everyone needs to create one but its perfectly fine to partner with or hire organizations to assist. Songtrust is fine. Long Answer: I just recorded a 11min+ video on this. It will drop on ASL(Ask Sirr Love). Thanks for the question.

Short Answer: Yes create a publishing company if you are signing multiple writers and sign them to the publishing company. Then go out there and sell the songs. Long Answer: I just recorded a 5min+ video detailing this further. Lookout for it to drop on the series titled ASL(Ask Sirr Love) on this Channel.

Do you make money as the distributer for the release
this is a great video - i started my company 3 years ago, best decision ive made in my business career
How u do it??
Regardless, you should create one in preparation. You never know....and you don't want to play catch-up later.
Hmm, I always thought that way but it's debatable & there's nothing to stop u from operating as a sole trader for the time-being..

Yessir. As long as you sign them to a pub deal.
I think people would start their own publishing company to split the publishing money not necessarily to do all the promoting

Is starting my own better than using songtrust? Doesn't songtrust have more outlets than what s new individual would?
You can do both Songtrust will partner with you. They take a percentage of your publishing not all of it. You still have your own publishing, they are just managing it.
Supposed you are starting out but aim to write and create content for others. Is it advisable yo start a publishing company?
Yes!
If you don’t own your publishing you’re throwing away 50% of your royalties.
