  • Music publishing can be intimidating to new artists because there's so much to learn. However with music streaming bringing in artists a smaller amount of money for your music, it's vital you know how to generate revenue from other sources. Which is where publishing comes in!
In this video I explain everything you need to know about music publishing, the truth, how it works and what you need to know for your music.

    👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my TH-cam channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, TH-cam channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

Main problem with publishing is in the education end of things, example if you do cover tunes, knowing that you can use Sound exchange for featured Artist royalty’s on the performance (no other place does it)
Silly things like that, make huge income potential.
But the Rub is,no one lays out the full procedure (hands on)
    The Areas it covers.....
People get confused because when they hear the word "performance royalty" they think publishing/songwriters... and if you didn't write the song (because it's a cover) you assume you can't collect any performance royalties. But what people don't usually know is that there are "composition performance royalties" and "master performance royalties". It's true, on a composition/songwriter "performance royalty" you can't collect those. They are paid to a PRO on a cover song. The publisher is entitled to that.
But on a cover song, YOU OWN THE MASTER, so you collect the "master performance royalty" from SoundExchange. If you are both the Featured Artists and Copyright Holder (master owner), then you collect both of those from Soundexchange.
Info like that is what I find 99 percent of us lack on publishing knowledge.

One of the biggest reasons for publishing companies buying up back catalogues of established artists is that demand for good music will be high in the coming years with the stifling of new talent coming through... this is mainly caused by lack of venues to play as governments attack the business blatantly to deter the grey market incomes.

Can you submit an audio recording when copyrighting a music composition or does it have to be transcribed into sheet music? (Note: I'm not talking about copyrighting a sound recording, I want to copyright the underlying musical composition. I would like to own the copyright for both the music composition and the sound recording, me being the author of both, but if I were to only copyright the music composition, are you allowed to use a sound recording to do that, or does it have to be transcribed into sheet music?)
