- Behind the scenes of the 1994 live-action version of 'The Jungle Book'. The film, owned by the Walt Disney Company, was directed by Stephen Sommers who later directed the successful 1999 blockbuster 'The Mummy' as well as its sequel.
This film has aged remarkably well. The acting, script, pace and special effect are all superb. The best live action Disney film.
I don't agree about the visuals, since the CGI model of Kaa looks pretty dated when compared to the Kaa from the 2016 film. That said, I do agree with everything else aging remarkably well.
I just watched this on HBO Max. I hadn't seen it in years. Man, the cinematography is breathtaking - it's so natural. I didn't realize how much I needed to see something so natural in a film with most movies using so much CGI. The scene where Mowgli is running through the jungle with the wolves and Bagheera, sheer agony on his face after what happened to Baloo, is heartbreaking and one of the most iconic scenes in a movie ever. As a kid I loved the story of this movie, as an adult...meh...I grappled with it. But there is no denying that this really is a masterpiece of filming.
This is my favorite Jungle Book movie! Nothing ever can compare to this movie!!
Dude, the 90's Jungle Book is one of my most nostalgic films!! I cannot stress how excited I am to see this! :D
Oscar Stainton So are we! :) You are welcome to subscribe for more nostalgia. Whatever we can find. ;)
"Groundhog Day" is a great movie to watch too ;-)
Oscar Stainton So am I.
This Film from 1994 is Lame! I like the 2016 one better than the Old one Version!
First there was dick track in 1990, then there was the rocketeer in 1991 then in 1994 we got the jungle book
My favorite part about this all my life watching this, that they use real animals and sets or real locations to film this and not CGI. It looks so much more beautiful and I also enjoyed the story and the uncharted territories they explore. So even as a kid, I never found the movie to be dull
This is one of the films that helped shaped my childhood. It's a prophecy this masterpiece happened ❤️
It was prophesized??🤯😱🤠😎
This has to be one of the best and most realistic versions of the Jungle book this movie was bad ass then and still bad ass now
I really don't like the realism in a live action Disney movie, though.
The best Jungle Book film in my opinion. Not for faithfulness to the book, but for the script, soundtrack, actors' chemistry, subtle political commentary on colonialism... everything is just perfect.
I think this film was the inspiration for Disney’s Tarzan.
This is great stuff! "Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book" is a film from my childhood! I hear that it actually received high critical praise when it was released. But I feel that over the years it's sort of faded into obscurity, which is kind of a shame because I feel it's really well done.
People forget I think it was a live action version of the Disney animation because it looked so different. It had to. They didn't have the technology to do singing bears and dancing monkeys lol Even I forgot it existed for some years.
@@seankyle1532 That may be a reason. While we do now have the special effects technology to pull off singing & dancing animals, seeing *real* animals in action (like in this film) has that ‘something’ to it that CGI cannot replicate.
@@velociraptor4you3291 Realism, I assume?
@@gr8gmr Yeah, that I can agree with. CGI is, at the end of the day, _replicating_ something from real life (depending on the movie), but taking artistic, creative liberties with it.
@@velociraptor4you3291 But to be honest, that's kinda the way I prefer it in movies that are aimed at the younger audience. This movie wasn't bad but it did have too much realism that made it hard for me to actually enjoy it. I always saw George of the Jungle as a more lighthearted alternative to it.
Why this isn't on Disney+ already I cannot fathom
"Great Fire!" Always loved that!
OMG,I love Jason Scott Lee! He's just sooooo gorgeous!!!!! ~
Really handsome
So is you
This version of The Jungle Book is my very favourite one. And it has some awesome music and it’s great to see and hear real animals too. And a couple of parts of it made me shed a few tears when I first saw them because of how emotional they are. And the song “Two Different Worlds” that is sung in the end credits of it by Kenny Loggins is rather emotional too. And of course wild animals have got the rights to live and survive as much as humans have.
This was a childhood movie for me & LOVED IT! Love these behind the scenes.
This film remains to this day my favorite story. As an animal man and an actor, this film hits home like no other.
This is my Fav version of this story!!! I can't find it on DVD ANYWHERE!!!!
You'll have to order it from Amazon.
Stephen Sommers: Jason Scott Lee is just so Innocent
Disney in 2020: Jason Scott Lee will play the Villain in Our Live Action Remake of Mulan
*You Either Die a Hero or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain*
I can't believe Disney never mentioned that when the new Mulan came out. Jason Scott Lee practically started the entire Disney Live Action Universe lol
@@MadMalManny also, Lena Headey turning from Kitty into Cersei
The dramatic swell of the opening theme really lets you know that you are about to embark on a quest with Mowhgli through the Indian jungles and are in store for all sorts of wonders. The music is so so good.
An amazing production. The jungle book movie is such an nostalgia raw beauty. My childhood when disney actually tried making movies.
Everybody tell the Nostalgia critic, he said recently that he wants to see a better live action "jungle book" movie and somehow he has never seen THIS ONE.
+Actaeon Wow this aged poorly. Taking that out of it, I doubt he'll check it out - apparently he hated The Mummy (1999) and Van Helsing so what are the odds he's gonna like the 90s Jungle Book. I don't know or care, I still find both Jungle Book remakes to be solid in their own ways personally.
Go to th-cam.com/video/5r-07Lsb2Mo/w-d-xo.html at the 20 minute mark. He tells you how he feels
@@MadMalManny I'm not watching it. After what was revealed to us back in 2018, I'm completely done with him for good.
@@burningexeter4365 understandable have a nice day
@@MadMalManny I don't know if that was intentional but that felt very passive aggressive.
even if a tiger was trained, showing someones back to it will trigger it's extinct to pounce, this movie was great for making all safe.
This movie was my childhood, I still have it on VHS tape looking at this. I'll never forget this, I've always couldn't stand William.
Way better than the 2016 one. The new one is overly computerized, looks so fake and cannot stand that the animals have literal coversations . The pather is grouchy and always wants to fight. The 1994 version flowed more naturally and more relatable.
Personally, I prefer the 2016 version because it's more accurate to the original story. Not saying the 1994 version was bad but it wasn't what I was looking for as a live action Disney movie.
I agree with you about this movie.
It gives so much to learn and it's one of my favorite movies.
@@gr8gmr so in other words, they didn't make the movie you wanted to, so rather than judging the movie based on what it is and what the creators intended, you judge it based on what you think it should be.
Please, don't critique art. You aren't suited for it.
@@guyledouche357 You sound confused. I said I prefer the 2016 version do to it being more closer to the original story. Not sure where you got the "critique art" part from. And it's human nature for people to choose something that suits their personal preference. You shouldn't take issue with that.
@@gr8gmr I'm not confused. In saying you're judging the film on the wrong criteria.
You are critiquing the art. You're critiquing the decision of the title first of all, and you even said they should've changed the name. That's a critique....and it isn't based on what the intention of the film was. It's based on your personal preference. Hardly a barometer to go why when judging the artwork itself.
Jungle Book (Disney, Live action) is one of my favorite films and stories of all time good characters I'm in love with the jungle book (BIG Disney fan by the way) but I also love other movies not just the jungle book like Beauty and the Beast, The Fox and the Hound, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, The Black Cauldron and more.
I was 6 in 1994 and back then this was truly "the live action Jungle Book" from Disney. Sadly that's about to change forever this weekend. Jon Favreau's new movie is just far too faithful and impressive. Once you bring back those songs, which this version made the fatal mistake of not having, you haven't a leg to stand on. But those of us who were there remember the "first time" it was attempted, always lol
this is my year i was born in 1994 scene of the lion king and the live action the jungle book 1994
Sean Kyle I agree with you except the songs part. How could you possibly expect this movie with real animals to have songs like the Animated Classic did. Did you expect the real animals used in this movie to start singing the Bare Necessities?
@@cameronturk4388 Exactly! The songs would have ruined and undermined the realistic edge this version brought to the table.
This version was great for what it was and not what it should've been.
@@cameronturk4388 I would have allowed it if the bear necessities scene was happening while the guy was drowning in quicksand 😂two extremes in the same scene
This is a reminder of: They don't do it anymore like this. Damn, this looks so epic.
This jungle book is my favorite along with the original 1967 2016 and can't wait for this one coming 2018
I live in South Carolina and it was great that they chose Beaufort as one of their filming locations.
Stephen Sommers: I am going to fill this movie with nightmare inducing deaths.
Disney: Understandable, have a good day.
This Movie Has Got to be Re-release on a 21rst Anniversary Edition on DVD/BLU-Ray, and it'll have all sorts of extras on both DVD and Blue-Ray, Like The making of this Movie, Interviews with the cast, etc, etc. also sometimes Animals can misbehave and can be unpredictable at times too, you just need to respect them, sometimes Animals have their good days, and Sometimes have their bad days, also Panthers, Bangle Tigers, and all of the other Jungle Animals are on the endanger Species list.
+Janie Doe ; and that sucks for these fantastic & classical jungle animals back in days before being on the end list of things.
If only Disney would remember this movie
They have a better version now.
@@gr8gmr nah, the other versions are nothing like this one. This one may be the least faithful to the books, but the layered acting, script, pace and the overall theme tune just beats them all hands down.
@@Sawrattan Doesn't mean anything if it's not faithful to the books.
@@gr8gmr so you'll take a crap film that's faithful to the books, over a good film that's less faithful. Right :)
@@Sawrattan The film isn't crap, though.
Funny thing about this film was after it’s premiere Disney used the same plot that was from the animated film, Tarzan in 1999.
I realized that the jungle book 1994 and Tarzan 1999 had a similar plot of being raised in the jungle, but the difference is that the villains have different agendas of greed.
@@taajwarpope2708Boone wanted treasure and Clayton wanted Prized Gorillas for money. So technically, they both wanted the same thing.
@@morganbailey3231 Yep.
Omg Jason is so cuuuuuute
I still describe this version as better than the 2016 version. And Animals can't speak like us humans either. Maybe it's better for kids who don't understand as much about wild animals. But this one's much better for representing nature and leaving it alone as it should be.
I say the 2016 version is definitely better for kids, which I think they aiming for with this movie.
If this version of this film was done by Disney, why has it not been put on Disney+ yet?
No idea. But this was genuinely a "live action version" of their animated Jungle Book at the time (20 years before the Bill Murray one). I can clearly remember it being promoted as that when I was a little kid.
Jason Scott lee is also in the Disney movie Lilo and stitch as the voice of David.
It's too bad Stephen Sommers hasn't gotten more directing jobs. He knew how to make adventure films.
Yes, he did.
The mummy movies, van helsing, gi joe... And though non of them became classics (except the first mummy movie) I always enjoy a stephen summers action movie.. They don't take themselves to seriously and don't overstay their welcome
Awesome movie ! Love the music 💖
I still a good movie to watch I miss watching it when I was a kid it looked better back then
The character of Kaa the snake in the animated version was a python. But in the live action movie, Kaa is an anaconda the biggest snake.
1:17 King Louie: (thinking) It’s gonna be great to see how this flick was put together! And old King Louie, that’s me, wants to welcome all the folks in DVD watching land!
What's cool about this film is that they actually do explain in the plot how King Louie gets his famous name lol Something the 2016 film didn't go the trouble of.
19:58 I really wish that music was on the soundtrack :(
+E Claw The waltz music fading into Poledouris' score should have been included too!
Is it not? I thought it's the track titled 'Spoils'?
*I LOVE THIS movie!* :-D
I love this movie childhood memories
I watched this along with the Lion King and world's greatest athlete on TV vhs recorded tape
I remember this movie and it's on Disney plus but I saw this movie in the theaters with The Santa Clause.
Why isnt this movie in Disney +?
Disney's The Jungle Book of 1994 is better than Disney's The Jungle Book of 2016, that's for sure! THIS is a good movie, not that CGI garbage directed by Jon Favreau. Here we had real locations, real animals, the story was interesting, the characters were fantastic and Jason Scott Lee was one of the best Mowgli in a movie about The Jungle Book.
I mostly agree with you except I am a Big Animal Lover and the animals used in this movie were apparently abused and mistreated by the Animal Trainers to do the stuff they did for the scenes. That’s one of the big reasons they don’t Train Real Tigers or Bears or Panthers for movies nowadays. It’s mostly CGI now. But in 1994 when this movie was made the CGI back then was No where near as Advanced as it is now.
I disagree. I think the 2016 version is much more faithful adaptation and better suited for kids, as opposed to the 1994 version, which is better off seen as something else entirely different, even from a Disney movie.
Jungle Book 1994 movie is the best. 🐅🐘🐺🐒🐻
7:56 Sounds like someone makes a better growling sound of a Big Cat. I’ve been wanting to say this for years.
Am I the only one who thinks this movie has an Indiana Jones feel to it?
Nope.
It's more Tarzan 1999 and Aladdin 1992.
Patrick Van Horn was news anchorman at WTAJ TV 10 in Altoona Pennsylvania 1979-1981.
Really good film
💯💯
Loved that
ohhh damm i thought it was the Original Amazing 1942 version. I would love to see how they made that masterpiece
This is the Best Live Action Disney Movie, Right Next to, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, The Incredible Journey, Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey, Homeward Bound 2 Lost in San Francisco, The Mighty Ducks, D2 The Mighty Ducks, D3 The Mighty Ducks, Cheetah (1989), Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Flight of the Navigator, Hocus Pocus, The Journey of Natty Gann, White Fang, White Fang 2 Myth of the White Wolf, Etc. Etc. also, I remember renting this movie when it was released on VHS, another hour later my husband Adam, our five children, our 6-year-old Identical Twins named Ellie (Girl) and Julian (Boy), our 8-year-old daughter named Sarah, our 10-year-old Fraternal Twins named Keith (Boy) and Ruth (Girl), and I would sit down in the living room, Adam would put the movie in the VCR, he would sit on the couch beside me, we would each have a bowl of Hot Popcorn with Hot Butter, a Candy Bar, a Soda Pop, We would watch the movie, and over the next few hours we would watch the movie in spellbound silence, it was amazing from start to finish, Great Acting, Great pace and Special Effects, Great Everything.
Yknow not a lot of people remember this movie, but I do. Not only do I remember it, but it taught me a little bit about British imperialism occurring about the same time as Red Dead Redemption 2.
One of the best movies in my humble opinion :)
Rudyard Kipling did NOT create King Louie; he wasn't in the original books.
That's right. He's a Disney creation and the strongest link in this film to the 1967 animation.
HOW'D THEY FILM THE QUICKSAND SCENE!????????
+Max Walker You should listen to the DVD commentary by the film's director and editor. I believe they explain that part.
Do you know how expensive it is to get your hands on a DVD copy now days?? I'm holding out for a new release of it.
How did they film the scene with the sand and ceiling trap
Stephen Sommers also worked on The Mummy and The Mummy Returns with Brendan Fraser.
Awesome!
I loved this movie. How did they train animals to become film actors?
With the best animal trainers.
For most people, Sam Neil who was in this disney film was also in Disney's Mighty Joe Young. But some people might remember him from the movies Bicentennial man, Jurassic park, and Jurassic park 3.
I don't remember seeing Sam Neil in Mighty Joe Young.
In the Mouth of Madness
Music:Basil Poledouris and John Debney(1994-2016)

According to the movie, the monkeys in the film are capuchins and King Louie is an orangutan. The word orangutan means man of the forest.
I hope movie comes to sweden disney plus or hbo

Ok, it's not Hoonamon. It's Hanuman, the Indian Monkey God. Can't watch this on TH-cam, so I'm going to try and find it on DVD.
Can I Please Watch The Making Of Honey We Shrunk Ourselves?
Is this from the DVD? o:
+Davion Blackwing Yes, it is. :)
I've been trying to find the DVD of this for a long time. Is it only available on Amazon? I have the VHS, but it's not really the same. This was one my all-time favorite movies when I was a kid. And of course, Cary Elwes is one of my mom's favorite actors...because of The Princess Bride. We watched this movie a few times a week. It's shocking we didn't wear out the tape. I'm hoping to find the DVD copy. I recently watched the new one. It's okay, I guess. I still consider the 1994 version to be the best adaptation. Course, the 1967 film was good too. I had the VHS of that one, too. My sister watched it almost every day. So the '67 film is good, but the '94 film is better...even better than the 2016 film. I felt there was too much CGI. Like pretty much the whole movie was all CG. The animals were CG. The locations were CG. I surprised Mowgli wasn't CG. I guess the filmmakers couldn't get an animal trainer. Or perhaps they felt CG creatures would be safer...and cheaper.
