Been in the hobby for almost 20yrs. I can assure you that you can run HOB long term. I always use HOB just because its cheap and the simplicity of it. I have a few videos of my 75gallon softie tank with just HOB if you guys wanna see
I actually switched from a fluval canister filter to a aquaclear 70 on my 30 gal tank. Love how much simpler the maintenance is. Working great so far! Hope to evenually upgrade to a bigger aio or sump based tank eventually.
That one with the red coral growing in the school is beautiful. Chris, I'm really enjoying all these videos, keep it up! Hit that thumbs up people. Peace.
I converted my 30g fresh water tank to salt water with HOB filter. I added a submersible and a HOB protein skimmer as well. Water changes weekly and feed every other day, things have been thriving for 10 months so far with fish and corals.
I have a hang on the back filter on my tank. Been up for more than 3yrs now and the coral and fish doing great. Eventually in the future I want 1 big saltwater tank and 1 big freshwater planted tank, I can't wait till that day comes😌😁
Sharing a german video about oxigenation made by a pond guy: th-cam.com/video/FKKfG1OByVo/w-d-xo.html He recommands using corse bubbles instead of fine bubbles for aeration. His argument is that what counts is surface water movement, which could also be achieved by usind streaming pumps oriented towards the surface. He says that fine bubbles tend to saturate the water with nitrogene, which is majoritary in the atmosphere. After seeing this I would not rely anymore only on the skimmer for oxigenation.
I run two tanks with hobs and canisters for over a year now and no issues. I use canisters for mechanical/bio filtration and the HOBs for all chemical for easy replacement of media. I see no need to change tanks or get a sump other than it maybe looks better but I’m happy how it is. I see problems with the industry pricing everything for the elite vs real hobbyists.
Ive got a HOB filter and have more complex things growing and living in it. Water flow is more important as long as you keep the tank clean. Just get a good cleanup crew and do weekly water changes and you're good to go
I’ve never don’t a hang on that back filter (don’t think their as popular here in the U.K.) but I’ve ran a successful canister reef aquarium before , but more maintenance but also easier too.

I concur. There is nothing wrong with a HOB.

Does it reliably restart after a power failure?
That is awesome!
Of course, Hang on the back filters are great for introducing oxigene into the water👍

Canister filters rule!😂🎉
I've had the same setup as the 2nd tank I love the tidal filters but I'm upgrading to sump now

Nice work!

I agree with that

Very true!

Just frags from here and there.
