Seriously. It could potentially work in the short term for field battles and defenses. But using it on scouts is super freaking stupid. If you force your scouts to fight to the death and not retreat then you wont get any intel, lose a bunch troops, and risk them leaking intel during captivity. And then marching into a larger scale ambish and losing your entire legion

Intended to galvanise the morale of the hard-pressed Red Army and emphasize patriotism, it had a generally detrimental effect and was not consistently implemented by commanders who viewed diverting troops to create blocking detachments as a waste of manpower. Decimation was also used by NKVD in Stalingrad during WWII, they had red army soldiers stand in a row and make a count. Every tenth soldier got shot in the head and after the punishment was carried over the survivors were warned that next time it'll be every fifth soldier who gets shot.
Oh they were worse than that. Just ask the families of the soldiers that had let them down.

I’ve seen a documentary about the Waffen SS doing the same to the regular German Troops at late war.
The issue i see with decimation (not morally but stricly strategically) is it encourages your troops to fight to the last. Which can be good for breaking enemy moral or holding a point of value. But when the scouts were ambushed that seems like a huge mistake. The whole point of scouts is to gather intel or sabotage enemy supply lines when possible. If you punish your scouts for surviving an ambush and bringing back intel they may fight to the last next time. Meaning you'll get no intel on the enemy and lose valuable troops. In the worst case scenario your scouts get captured and leak intel to the enemy. It's basically really effective once but the more you use it the more it will backfire.
I think that this and other things like the lust, greed and gluttony of those who were in the Roman Age, was precisely their downfall... their logic was that they felt invincible for winning many battles and losing few, but they let over time and they fell into depravity and began to make stupid laws or rules to try to keep their soldiers in line without really asking why they did it, in fact, they solved everything with violence. That will also have happened to all ancient civilizations.

Decimation was rarely used. Rome wasn't exactly looking to kill off a good portion of its own army.
It probably depends on the emperor or even the commanding officers.. or Rome definitely did not want their soldiers either defecting due to low morale or going AWOL
i think at most itwas only used on offending units and groups vs... the entire army. cause you'd be in a situation where the entire army would likely revolt instead of going through with it. If its only a small portion of the group, the ones offending, then they wouldn't have that kinda backup.
Another interesting fact about the Romans. The word salary actually comes from the word Sal. Sal is Latin for salt and Roman soldier were paid in salt when there was no silver or gold to give the troops for pay. Pretty cool fact.
Plus considering salt was a commodity (could be used for preservation, tanning, improving food, etc), it had a pretty good value. They were paid their exact wage in its value in salt. Plus since salt has an higher value in some areas at the time, and is always needed, it was a good investment.

@@Nova-bq8tk Well they did say Julius Caesar threaten decimation but never used it and Emperor Julian was the last Emperor to use decimation that is really known. And the start of the actual Roman Empire was after Julius Caesar died. So no citation really needed as the video states this already?
