From a strictly material point of view, absolutely. My grandfather had compiled copious records of our families (he didn’t just gather the records from his line, by also the matrilineal lines) and upon viewing them, it was startling how many children died in infancy as well as prior to adolescence. At least a third of children died within a year of birth, and another quarter before adolescence. In reality it took about 7 pregnancies to ensure 2 or 3 children living to adolescence. To say nothing of stillbirths or miscarriages, which were not even recorded. That would be a medical catastrophe of the highest order if it happened today.
On the other hand, I can’t shake the feeling that they had something we do not. It isn’t anything material, either. As I said, there is zero doubt that our lives are infinitely more materially blessed than theirs. They would be stunned to have a small device in their pocket that retrieved any information at the speed of light, or to see their family’s face from the other side of the planet. It would blow their minds that they could be in London in the morning and Los Angeles in the evening. All true. Yet I can’t help but envy the fondness with which they viewed their family and community. I have a small note in which a teenage girl was excitedly telling her second cousin that she would be taking a wagon the next month to visit a town about 45 minutes away by car. This was a big trip. I drive further than that as a commute. I drive past that town 5 days a week. It would be an errand to go there for me. Yet these girls were so excited to spend the time together. I couldn’t even tell you who my second cousins are, and I can’t remember if I ever met them.
I wouldn’t say that I’d want to live in 1840 like my ancestor. But I’m also not sure that I can say my lifestyle and society is better in every way, either. 😊

One thing about scurvy was that originally it was believed acidity in general was the cure to scurvy rather than the specific ascorbic acid vitamin C that is why oil of vitriol was tried it was way more shelf stable and it is extremely acidic it is sulfuric acid after all later they got closer but they thought citric acid was the key fortunately they come together in fruit but eventually found limes didn't work as well as lemons and oranges despite being more acidic

    • @mikewhite8848

Exactly, even as a kid I knew wiping yourself with flimsy toilet paper was not the solution. It's like trying to clean a sweatshirt full of mud with napkins. As I grew up I started cleaning myself with wet wipes or sometimes even taking a shower and switching underwear. I tell people all the time. If you use the bathroom to pee and poo a few times you are essentially dirty a that point regardless if you showered earlier that day.

U-1206 was actually sunk by its own captain because the toilet itself was so overly complicated it REQUIRED an ENGINEER just to flush, the captain being a kriegsmarine captain thought he was smart enough to flush any other toilet so why bother getting said engineer to do it for him but, this was NOT your average toilet. The engineer was only called after said improper flush because this particular toilet was the perfect culmination of German overengineering and overconfidence combined in the most catastrophic of ways. Needless to say the kreigsmarine scrapped this design having only ever built the one solitary toilet in U-1206. Everything else mentioned was more or less true though. THIS WAS NOT THE ENGINEER'S FAULT. He was only called to fix the captain's screw-up.

Hygiene was once of the biggest determining factors in the allies defeating the axis militaries in WWII. Neither Japan nor Germany used latrines or any basic hygienic practices & both armies had severe problems with illness/disease.
Edit: best example is in the North African desert where the allies dig latrines at least 100yds away from where they slept & ate. The Nazis on the other hand urinated & defecated in crates & boxes where they slept & ate and only factored in the smell. They lost more soldiers to disease than they did fighting the allies in North Africa.

In my opinion it is fine if you are just making camp for a night or 2, i have no military experience but if a war broke out i would join in a heartbeat, probably as a medic, i might not have much upper body strength but my legs are pure muscle, it is nearly impossible to find boot socks that fit if that tells you anything, i also know a lot about medicine, (my mom was a nurse for 27 years, I saw my dad get injured more than once), probably the worst i saw was when he drilled right through his finger and then reversed it out (which was actually a mistake), he then grabbed a wrag and some horse meds (they were basically rubbing alcohol) which he dumped on the wound, he later said that was the worst pain in his life. I also am a natural with guns (i once kept pace on the range with a family member who was ex military despite the fact that i have no formal training or previous experience with either of the guns he brought), I also have some experience with explosives and situational awareness is second nature to me, yes i would lose in a fistfight with just about anyone but if you count hand to hand combat with weapons it is a different story, i know how to throw a tomahawk and knife (never tried to throw a spear), i also know how to track many animals and humans. I just now got home from tracking down my dog, i had to go through waist high grass too difficult for a quad and then track him for a few hundred yards on partially finished quad trails and i was barefoot (to be fair I have walked a lot farther without shoes but this is one of the longest and was made worse by the terrain), if this had been about 5 years ago i could've got my dad to drop off the quad for me but with him dead i am the only one that lives in my house and can ride a quad (if it were a different design like the one one of my relatives uses for logging... at least on the rare occasion it is working, she probably could get on it but still it would be a problem because the shed we keep the quad in is on the other side of the yard and it is rather sketchy to get a quad in or out of the shed because it doesn't have a ramp and the scrub trees we are using as a ramp similar to how the ancient Egyptians moved the stones to build the pyramids, have a tendency to dig themselves into the sandy soil where I live, also i have nearly destroyed one wall of the shed a few times) the really tall grass would not be easy on the quad, I'd probably put it in 1st gear not 3rd or 4th like when I'm cruising at a totally safe 30+ mph offroad, also while there is a lot of quad trails behind my house these are either new ones or ones i have not seen in about a decade and was too small to remember. For some reason i have no problems navigating the quad trails off memory that is sometimes years old, i struggle to navigate a car.

There's thousands of records and accounts from British monistary's, churches, ect speaking of adultery around the time the first vikings started settling in Britain. The native British woman were leaving and cheating on their native husband's with the newly arrived Scandinavians. They were extremely attracted to them because it was common standard to do things like bathing weekly, brushing their hair and teeth and even using herbs as deodorant and perfume. These things were somewhat standard for the noble classes but fairly rare for among commoners. Surprisingly the churches and local governments very often ruled in favor of the woman when the issue was brought to attention for judgment. This forced hygiene standards in Britain. I bet most people don't understand how much of an impact the vikings had all over the world. Another little known fact is in most of medieval Europe a husband or wife could seek and likely get a divorce if their spouse was failing to fulfill their more carnal needs..within reason. So if you're husband or wife isn't putting our regularly that's legal grounds for divorce.
